AnimalRightsShouldbeCommonSense
Animalrightshasbeenamajortopicforawhilenowandisbeginningtobedealtwith.
Formostpeople,animalrightsseemslikesomethingthatwealreadyhaveorshouldhavebut
therearentanyforanimalsatthistime.TheAnimalLegalDefenseFundproposedanAnimal
BillofRightswithsixrightsthatanimalsshouldhave.Now,someoftheseseemliketheyshould
justbecommonsensebutthisbearsaquestion,shouldanimalshaveabillofrights?Dohumans
reallyneedananimalbillofrightstoshowsomehumandecencytoanotherspeciesonthis
planet?Ifmostpeopleknewhowtheseanimalswerebeingtreatedinlaboratoriestherewouldbe
somepushbackagainstthosecompaniesandwouldeventuallyfollowsomecodeandshowsome
actualhumandecency.Ifabillofrightsforanimalsistheonlywayforthemtobetreated
properly,thentheydeserveone.
TakingalookattheALDFsproposedbillofrights,wecanseefromthestartthatsome
ofthesearejustshowingbasichumandecencytoanotherspecies.Thefirstfiverightsinthisbill
ofrightsarejustandshouldbegiventoanimalseventhoughmostofthemshouldjustbe
somethingwedoinsteadofsomethingthatisforcedbylaw.Thesecommonsenserights
includetherightofanimalstobefreefromexploitation,cruelty,neglect,andabuseandthe
rightoflaboratoryanimalsnottobeusedincruelorunnecessaryexperiments(ALDF1).Its
amazinghowthesearentthingsthatwealreadydo.Anotherrightthatpeopleknowaboutisthe

rightofcompanionanimalstoahealthdiet,protectiveshelter,andadequatemedicalcare
(companionanimalsreferstopets)(ALDF1).AccordingtoTheHumaneSocietyofTheUnited
States,1,880crueltycases[were]reportedinthemediain2007thesebeingdogs(1,212),cats
(337),andotheranimals(470)(HumaneSociety1).AlotofAmericansknowthatmanyofthese
animalsarebeingtreatedpoorlybutnothingseemstobeendoneaboutitbesidessheltersfor
themacrosstheUnitedStates.Thesethreerightsalongwiththerightofwildlifetoanatural
habitat,ecologicallysufficienttoanormalexistenceandselfsustainingpopulationandthe
rightoffarmedanimalstoanenvironmentthatsatisfiestheirbasicphysicalandpsychological
needsarerightsthatanimalsshouldhaverightnowandshouldbegiveninananimalbillof
rightsiftheyhavetobeenforceduponeveryonebylaw.
Therearemanymorepeopleconcernedwithanimalsrightsaswell.EdYoungwrites
aboutanimalsrightsinanarticleonseedmagazine.comtitledOfPrimatesandPersonhood:Will
AccordingRightandDignitytoNonhumanOrgansismsHaltResearch?.Inaquotefrom
PeterSinger,hesaysthatallcreaturesthatcanfeelpainshouldhaveabasicmoralstatusand
thattheseanimalsarenotproperty(Young1).Theseanimalsshouldnotjustbetreatedlike
theyarentsignificantbeingsinthisworldeveniftheymaynotbeasintelligentasushumans,
theystillplaytheirpartintheworld.Wealreadyusetheseanimalsforexperimentstobetterour
ownliveswithoutacareintheworldbecauseitbenefitsourliveswithoutthinkingaboutthem.
JeremyRifkintalksabouthowanimalsfeelpain,sufferandexperiencestress,affection,
excitementandevenloveinhisarticleAChangeofHeartaboutAnimals(Rifkin1).Why
shouldwetreatanimalswithcrueltywhentheyhavethesamefeelingsasus?Thisshouldbe
commonsensethatwetreatanimalstosomedegreeofhowwewouldwanttobetreated.

Ifthisinformationaboutanimalsrightsshouldbeconsideredcommonsenseandhuman
decency,thenwhyarepeopleopposedtoit?Well,RussellPaulLaVallesaysthatarightisa
moralprinciplethatgovernsonesfreedomofactioninasociety(LaValle1).LaVallealso
quotesJosephMurrayinsayingthatanimalexperimentationhasbeenessentialtothe
developmentofcardiacsurgery,transplantationsurgery,jointreplacement,andallvaccinations
(LaValle1).Thisbringsupaquestionareanimalsbeingtreatedpoorlyinordertogetthese
results?Andifso,isitpossibletogettheseresultswithouttreatingthempoorly?Inaquotefrom
theUnitedStatesFoodandDrugAdministration,theysaidthatcurrently,nineoutoften
experimentaldrugsfailinclinicalstudiesbecausewecannotaccuratelypredicthowtheywill
behaveinpeoplebasedonlaboratoryandanimalstudies(U.S.FoodandDrugAdministration
1).Ifsomanyofthesedrugsfailbecauseofhowdifferentinanatomyhumansaretotheanimals
wetest,shouldwecontinuetestingandharmingtheseanimals?
Thequestionathandisstilldebatablebutthereissufficientevidencetoprovethatanimal
testingisharmingalotofanimalsandneedstobedealtwithinsomewayaswellasharmingof
wildandhouseholdanimals.Peopleneedtoeithergetsomehumandecencyandtreatthese
animalsthewaythattheyshouldbetreatedoralawshouldbeenforceduponeveryone,likethis
billofrights.
