Pentecost Sunday

May the Holy Spirit be with you on this special day in the Churchs calendar. We friars see the Holy
Spirit working every day at the Shrine in many different ways. We are so grateful for your presence,
your prayers and all that you are for the Shrine.
Recently I attended a talk given by Dr. Jim OConnell, President of Boston Health Care for the Homeless.
Dr. Jim is extremely knowledgeable about the Boston homeless population and is very effective in
working with their medical and other needs. Someone asked him a question about how best to handle
the frequent requests for money that we who walk in Boston often get.
My own thought is that the question is a difficult one. Our faith tells us to be kind and generous to the
poor. On the other hand, we know that much of the money given out is at risk of being spent on
substance abuse or alcohol. Dr. Jim gave what I thought was a great answer. He said that each one of us
should get to know one homeless person. Build up a relationship with one that person, speaking with
them whenever you can. Call the person by name every time that you see them. Give that one person
money, if it seems appropriate. But the kindness extended through engaged conversation is something
that is very humanizing and something that the person might not get at another time during the day.
Dr. Jims answer is perfect in so many different ways. The homeless arent all the same. They all have
unique stories, all have family histories, all have a journey that they are on. To listen to someone share
a story of hardship or tragedy is a terrific gift to that person. Maybe, as we do this, we can listen for the
voice of the Holy Spirit in each story.
Thank you, Dr. Jim, for all of the good work that you do for the homeless in Boston.

"What Ever Happened to Civil Discourse? Martin Buber on Dialogue."

th

th

Fr. Raphael Bonnano, OFM is offering a 2-part presentation on Fridays: June 17 and June 24 . 12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. Second Floor Classroom

No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, most of us can't help but be dismayed and disappointed by the depths to which our civil discourse
has sunk. Name-calling and accusations have replaced genuine, respectful discussions about important issues.
The philosophy of Martin Buber, a 20th Century Jewish thinker, may be the key to how we can return to a more civilized way of dialogue and discourse.
Join Fr. Raphael Bonanno, OFM for this 2 week series on one of recent history's most intriguing minds and what he has to offer civil discourse today.
