22.7 Randys Personality Case Study
Directions: Apply specific concepts from the theorist (explain them in your own words) to
Randy's behavior.
Concept of theorist

Concept as witnessed in Randy's behavior

Freud
1. Id- An unconscious drives that is
always seeking to have its
aggressive and sexual desires
satisfied. This part of the personality
is know as the pleasure principle
because it causes a person to seek
pleasure in any way possible.

When Randy was a child, he would always cry

to his mom for some sort of attention in which
his mom would immediately respond as satisfy
his needs. If he cried, his mom was right there
with a bottle, checking his diaper or seeing what
Randy needed.

2. Repression- a defense mechanism in

which a person uses to drown his
thoughts and feelings of anxiety into his
unconscious mind to keep it from reaching
consciousness.

When Randy hears his fathers insults, he

would repress them by withdrawing from
conversations and drawing cartoons to distract
these thoughts from taking over. Rather than
fight with his dad, Randy would just withdraw to
his room to draw his cartoons.

Jung
1. Collective unconscious- It is the
reservoir of our experiences as a species,
a kind of knowledge we are all born with.
And yet we can never be directly
conscious of it. It influences all of our
experiences and behaviors, most
especially the emotional ones, but we only
know about it indirectly, by looking at
those influences.

When Randy was still a baby, he knew who his

closest person was to him, his mother. No one
had told Randy that this particular woman was
his mother, but somehow he knew it as soon as
he was born. Randy was very close to his
mother.

2. principle of equivalence-The energy

created from the opposition is "given" to
both sides equally. When more energy is
put into one side while the other side is
acknowledged, then a persons psyche
improves.

Randys personality developed from having a

good psyche. His father wanted him to enroll in
sports while he wanted to draw cartoons. Randy
put more energy into becoming a cartoonist
while still acknowledging that he is bigger than
most people in his class and could have done

well in sports. But for Randy, it didn't matter that

he was one of the biggest kids in his grade, he
wasn't interested in sports. He wanted to be a
cartoonist.
Adler
1. Striving for perfection- It is a principle
similar to the concept of self-realization,
where a person is always striving to reach
his or her full potential and achieve it.

Since Randy was a child, he strived for

perfection in his arts. He applied to the best art
schools in order to focus on his talents and
become a cartoonist some day. Once in
college, Randy excelled in his artwork The
first cartoon that he had published was a big hit.

2. Striving for superiority- when a person

tries hard to be better than others and to
achieve more than others.

Randy tried hard to be successful than his

brothers, who did not strive for any
improvements. His brothers had become their
dad-working in menial jobs with no room for
advancement. That wouldn't be him, he was
going to be successful at something he liked
doing!

Horney
1. Inner Conflicts- the problems that a
person goes through makes them have a
potential of becoming a better or decent
person.

The problems that Randy faced, such as his

fathers assaults, made him strive to block out
his father from his life and only work to be a
better artist. When Randy was a senior in high
school, he made plans to get away from his
overbearing father. He would create a
magnificent portfolio and get a scholarship to art
school.

2. Neurotic needs:
The neurotic has a desperate need for
acceptance and affection.

Randys personality developed from his neurotic

need of wanting to be loved and accepted for
who he is as an artist. Randy was finally happy.
He had a woman who understood his love of art
and who accepted him for who he was.

Maslow
1. Hierarchy of needs
Esteem needs: Need for self-esteem,
achievement, competence, and
independence; need for recognition and
respect from others.

Randys personality was able to develop

because some of his needs, including his
esteem needs, were met and satisfied by his
mother. Kathleen was very proud of Randy's
artistic side and she enrolled him in art classes.

2. Hierarchy of needs- According to

Maslow, one goes through a hierarchy of
needs in which when a basic need is
fulfilled they can move on to satisfy a
higher need.
Belongingness and love needs- need to
love and be loved, to belong and be
accepted; need to avoid loneliness and
separation.

Randys personality developed due to his

belongingness and love needs being met from
his mother and his wife Robby. Randy thought
she was like his mother. Randy was finally
happy. He had a woman who understood his
love of art and who accepted him for who he
was.

Rogers
1. Growth-promoting climate:
empathic- sharing and mirroring our
feelings and reflecting our meanings.

Randys personality developed and grew due to

the growth-promoting environment that his wife
offered him. She was empathetic with him and
understood his love for the arts. Randy thought
she was like his mother. Randy was finally
happy. He had a woman who understood his
love of art and who accepted him for who he
was.

2. Self-concept- all the thoughts and

feelings we have in response to the
question, Who am I? If our self-concept
is positive, we tend to act and perceive
the world positively. If it is negativeif in
our own eyes we fall far short of our ideal
selfsaid Rogers, we feel dissatisfied
and unhappy.

Randy had a positive self-concept. He kept in

his mind that he wanted to be a cartoonist and a
much successful person than his brothers. By
doing that, he thought of a positive future for
himself, in which he accomplished his dreams.
His brothers had become their dad-working in
menial jobs with no room for advancement. That
wouldn't be him, he was going to be successful
at something he liked doing!

Rotter
1. External Locus of Control- the
Randys mother became his external locus of
perception that chance or the environment control because she had always wanted a girl
determines the persons fate.
and she almost treated Randy as if he was a girl
by always being near him and spending time
with him to do crafts. Because of her, Randy
grew up loving art rather than playing sports like
his brothers. Kathleen had hoped that Randy
would actually be a girl after having three sons.
She was a stay-at-home mom and spent a lot of
time with her children, but she was especially
close to Randy.
2. Internal Locus of Control- the

Instead of letting his dad control him, Randy

perception that a person controls their

own fate.

had already set a goal and a future for himself.

He was the one that ended up controlling his
own fate by choosing to be in art school and
working at the marketing firm and becoming a
cartoonist. With his boss's help, Randy found a
company that was willing to publish his
cartoons.

Bandura
1. Social-cognitive perspective- a theory
that proposes that the environment and a
persons interactions with their
environment is what shapes their
personality.

Randys environment at home and his

interactions with his parents shaped his
personality. His mother supported his talent and
pushed him to strengthen it, while his father
always assaulted him and in turn, Randy used
his talent to get through his hard times at home.
Rather than fight with his dad, Randy would just
withdraw to his room to draw his cartoons.

2. Self-Efficacy- a belief in ones own

abilities to deal with certain situations.

Even though Randy did not say directly that he

will overcome his conflicts, but his actions said it
all. Instead of listening to his father, he kept
pursuing his dreams of becoming a cartoonist
and becoming better and more successful than
his brothers. His brothers had become their
dad-working in menial jobs with no room for
advancement. That wouldn't be him, he was
going to be successful at something he liked
doing!
