22.7 Randys Personality Case Study
Directions: Apply specific concepts from the theorist (explain them in your own words) to
Randy's behavior.
Concept of theorist
Freud
1. Id- An unconscious drives that is
always seeking to have its
aggressive and sexual desires
satisfied. This part of the personality
is know as the pleasure principle
because it causes a person to seek
pleasure in any way possible.
Jung
1. Collective unconscious- It is the
reservoir of our experiences as a species,
a kind of knowledge we are all born with.
And yet we can never be directly
conscious of it. It influences all of our
experiences and behaviors, most
especially the emotional ones, but we only
know about it indirectly, by looking at
those influences.
Horney
1. Inner Conflicts- the problems that a
person goes through makes them have a
potential of becoming a better or decent
person.
2. Neurotic needs:
The neurotic has a desperate need for
acceptance and affection.
Maslow
1. Hierarchy of needs
Esteem needs: Need for self-esteem,
achievement, competence, and
independence; need for recognition and
respect from others.
Rogers
1. Growth-promoting climate:
empathic- sharing and mirroring our
feelings and reflecting our meanings.
Rotter
1. External Locus of Control- the
Randys mother became his external locus of
perception that chance or the environment control because she had always wanted a girl
determines the persons fate.
and she almost treated Randy as if he was a girl
by always being near him and spending time
with him to do crafts. Because of her, Randy
grew up loving art rather than playing sports like
his brothers. Kathleen had hoped that Randy
would actually be a girl after having three sons.
She was a stay-at-home mom and spent a lot of
time with her children, but she was especially
close to Randy.
2. Internal Locus of Control- the
Bandura
1. Social-cognitive perspective- a theory
that proposes that the environment and a
persons interactions with their
environment is what shapes their
personality.
