Introduction
BeforeyouperformanyprocedureinthisSpecialInstruction,readtheinformationandunderstandthe
informationthatiscontainedinthisinstruction.
Thisspecialinstructionincludestherecommendedmethodsfordeterminingfueldilutionoftheengine
oil.Additionally,theprobablecausesandtherecommendationforcorrectingthefueldilutionare
provided.

RecommendedActions
MeasuringFuelDilution
Dieselfuelischemicallysimilartothelubricantsthatareusedindieselengines.Aslowfuelleakwill
blendthefuelintotheoil.Normaloperatingtemperaturesmaycausevolatilepartsofthefueltovaporize.
Thefuelthatremainsintheoilislessvolatile.
Aclosedcupflashtestissometimesusedtodetectfueldilution.Theflashtestisdesignedtomeasurethe
volatilepartsofthefuelthatareremainingintheoil.Detectinglessvolatilefuelisdifficult,detection
reducestheaccuracyoftheflashtest.
Sincetheflashtestdoesnotaccuratelydetectfueldilution,donotusetheflashtestastheonly
measureoffueldilution.Instead,verifythedilutionbythefollowingmethods:

Oilviscosity
Thegaschromatographmethodisdesignedtomeasurefueldilutionincrankcaseoils.Thegas
chromatographinstrumentcanidentifythesmallchemicaldifferencesbetweendieselfuelandlubricating
oil.AgaschromatographisusedtomeasurefueldilutionatallCaterpillarregionalSOSServicelabs.
SomeCaterpillardealersalsouseagaschromatograph.Eventhoughthegaschromatographprovidesa
moreaccuratemeasureoffueldilution,alwaysverifytheresultswiththeviscositytest.
Asignificantleveloffueldilutionreducesoilviscosity.Ifanunacceptableleveloffueldilutionis
suspected,thekinematicviscosityoftheoilmustbemeasured.
Fueldilutionthatisgreaterthan6percentwillusuallycauseviscositythatislessthanthespecified
viscositygrade.Iftheoilisstillwithinthespecifiedviscositygrade,likelyfueldilutionhasnotreached
anunacceptablelevel.Usethefollowingcharttodetermineifviscosityhasreachedtheminimum
acceptablelevel.TheguidelinesofviscosityinthechartareslightlylessthanthelimitsoftheSAE
viscositygrades.However,theseguidelinesstillprovideadequateengineprotection.

Alwaysverifyfueldilutionbythecombinationoflowoilviscosityandagaschromatographresult.A
resultinexcessof6percentdilutionisrequiredbeforeinvestigatingorservicingtheengine.Askyour
dealershiptosubmitanoilsampletoaCaterpillarregionalSOSServicelabforanalysis.Unlessthe
dilutiontestcanbeperformedatyourdealership.

TroubleshootingforSourcesofFuelDilution
LowPressureFuelSystemSourcesforIncreasedFuelDilution
Verifysystempressuresatidle,highidle,andimmediatelyaftershutdown.
MeasurethefuelpressureatthefollowinglocationstobesurethatthepressuresmeettheApplication
andInstallationGuidespecifications.

Outletofreturnpressureregulator
Verifythattherearenorestrictions.
Excessiverestrictionsmaycauseelevatedsystemoperatingpressure,whichwouldresultin
increasedleakagerate.
Verifythatthereisnodebrislodgedinthepressureregulator.
Ifpressureismaintainedontheheadaftershutdown:
Verifythattheelectricprimingpump(ifequipped)isnotpoweredwhenthekeyisoff.
Verifythatthepurgeorificeinthepressureregulatorisnotplugged.
Usethefollowingproceduretodeterminethelocationsofsourcesoffueldilutionaroundtheelectronic
unitinjectorsunderthevalvecover.

Note:Theenginemustbeatoperatingtemperatureornearoperatingtemperatureinordertoperformthis

Note:Donotexceed745kPa(108psi)offuelpressureintherailofthecylinderheadwhenyou
pressurizethefuelsystemwithaprimingpump.
1. Adddyetothefuelinthecontainerpertheinstructionsforthedyeandmixwell.
2. Puttheinletandreturnlinesforthefuelinthecontainerwithdyedfuel.
3. Starttheengine.Operatetheengineuntilatleast11L(3USgal)offuelisused,oroperatethe
engineuntilthedyedfuelhasreturnedtothecontainer.Stoptheengine.
4. Removethevalvecovers.
5. Capthefuellineandpressurizethefuelsystemwithaprimingpump.
6. Usetheblacklighttoinspectalloftheunitinjectors.Aleakisindicatedbyadefinitestreakof
dyedfuelattheleakinglocation.

fuelleak.Confirmtheleakiseitherfromasolenoidtothejointsealforthehousing,orfromadamaged
unitinjectorbody.Removeinjectorsthataresuspectedofhavingadamagedbodyandinspectthe
injectorsforvisiblecracks.Replaceaunitinjectorifeitherthesealsareleaking,thebodyiscracked,or
thebodyisdamagedresultinginfuelleaking.

Lookforsignsofdamagetotheunitinjectors.Ifnecessary,replacetheunitinjectorsthathavedamaged
tips.Use1643310InfraredThermometer,1643320InfraredThermometerGp,or1669030Infrared
ThermometerGptoidentifyexcessivetipleakagewhiletheengineisrunning.

CrackedCylinderHeadorLeakingCylinderHeadGasket
Checkforsymptomsofadamagedcylinderheadorofadamagedcylinderheadgasket.Inspectthe
coolingsystemforcontaminationoffuel.Inspectthecrankcasefordilutionoftheengineoil.Dilution
maybeasignofacrackedcylinderheadorofaleakingcylinderheadgasket.

Plugthesideofthecylinderheadthatreturnsthefuel.Ensurethatthefuelrailisfulloffuel.Pressurize
thefuelrailfromtheintakesideofthehead.Donotexceed550kPa(80psi).Checkunderthevalve
coversforfuelthatisleakingfromholes(4).

LeakageoftheDriveShaftSealontheFuelTransferPump
Ensurethattheweepholeforthefueltransferpumpisnotplugged.Inspectthefrontofthepumpfor
signsofleakage.Ifnecessary,repairthefueltransferpumporreplacethefueltransferpump.

TheDutyCycleforMachineApplicationsRequiresaReducedOil
ChangeInterval
Themachineapplicationorthedutycyclemaybecontributingtounacceptablefueldilution.Enginesthat
functionproperlycanexhibitexcessivefueldilutionfromidlingforlongperiodsatatime.Underhigh

loadsandtheresultinginhightemperaturesfromthecrankcase,somefuelisremovedfromtheengine
oilbythedistillation.Theoilsampleswillindicatedifferentlevelsoffueldilution.Lessfueldilution
occurswhiletheengineisunderheavyload.Morefueldilutionoccurswhiletheengineisunderlight
loads.Fueldilutionmayincreaseduringperiodsofcoldweather.Enginesthatruncoldduetoleaking
thermostatsmayalsoexhibitanincreaseinfueldilution.
Iftheothercausesoffueldilutionareeliminated,thenthedutycycleofthemachinemayrequirea
reducedoilchangeinterval.Usethefollowingproceduretodeterminethecause.
1. Verifythefueldilutionbylowviscosityandagaschromatographfueldilutiontest.Thefuel
dilutiontestshouldbeequaltoorgreaterthan6percent.RefertoTable1aboveforminimum
viscositybyoilgrade.
2. Initially,reducetheengineoilchangeintervalby50hours.Submitoilsamplesforevaluationat
onehalfofthenewintervalandatthetimeofthenewinterval.
3. Ifthereducedintervalproducesacceptableresultsfromtheoilanalysis,continueoperationwith
thatinterval.
4. Ifviscosityandfueldilutionarestillunacceptable,reducetheservicebyanother50hours.
Evaluatetheresultsfromeachoilsample.RefertoStep2fortheproperprocedureonevaluating
theoilsamples.
5. Continuetheaboveprocessuntilacceptableresultsforgaschromatographfueldilutionandforoil
viscosityareobtained.
