AID 66325: Embedded switch product Compatibility FAQ:

How do I know if a product has the embedded switch technology?

These products will have 2 ports to support linear and Ring Topologies. The product
catalog number will end with an R. For example, 1756-EN2T is the ControlLogix
EtherNet/IP communication module with a single port; 1756-EN2TR is the ControlLogix
EtherNet/IP communication module with 2 ports to support linear and ring topologies.
Why are the embedded switch products not compatible with older versions of firmware?
The addition of the QoS feature adds an element to the data packet not supported in the
older versions of software.
What types of communications are affected by this new feature?
If the customer has one of the affected products in their system, it will only be affected if
they are scanning it in the I/O configuration of the controller (Class 1 connections).
Other types of communications like MSG instructions and OPC communications will not
be affected by the addition of the new feature.
Where can I go to get the latest firmware?
The latest firmware is available on the website at:
http://support.rockwellautomation.com/ControlFlash/
How will I know if my system has an incompatible product, what are the symptoms?
The customer will probably see connection timeouts in the I/O tree. For products which
provide diagnostics (e.g. via a web page), the user may also see UDP checksum errors or
other input errors being reported.
Do I need the QoS feature for my application?
QoS is very important for CIP Sync and CIP Motion applications. Its highly
recommended for applications that include Device Level Ring (DLR) architecture. It is
also highly recommended for converged network applications (integrated with IT
controlled or enterprise networks) that would involve the introduction of additional
network traffic (particularly voice or video). All other applications will not need the QoS
feature to function as they do today.
What can I do if the product I need to use does not have compatible firmware available?
Use CIP messaging to set the QoS object attributes to zero, effectively shutting the
feature off, to work around the incompatibility.

How can I turn the QoS feature off on my EN2TR to allow compatibility without
updates?
This must be done with a MSG instruction in Logix. Attributes 5-8 in the QoS object
must be set to zero to achieve compatibility without updates: Below is an example of the
message instruction required to set attribute #5 to zero. This MSG instruction would be
repeated for Attributes 6, 7 and 8. These attributes are stored in non-volatile memory, so
these setting will only need to be modified once. In addition, it will be important to
power cycle the module once these settings are modified. They will not take effect until
a power cycle occurs.

Service Code: 10hex
Class: 48hex

How can I turn the QoS feature on for standard messaging in my EN2T (F)(XT) module
with 3.x firmware?
To take advantage of the QoS features available in these products, the QoS object can be
set with a MSG instruction in Logix. Below is an example of the message instruction
required to set attribute #5 to the setting recommended by the ODVA. Attributes 5, 6, 7,
and 8 will need to be set as follows: Attribute 5 = 47, Attribute 6 = 43, Attribute 7= 31,
and Attribute 8 = 27. These attributes are stored in non-volatile memory, so these setting
will only need to be modified once. In addition, it will be important to power cycle the
module once these settings are modified. They will not take effect until a power cycle
occurs.
