FacingHistoryReflection:Islamophobia

OnWednesday,February10,2016,theFacingHistoryclasspreparedanIslamophobia
activitytoraiseawarenessaboutprejudiceandbiasagainstIslamsandMuslimsfortheentire
school.Tobeginthefacinghistoryreflection,eachadvisorywentintoaclassroomwithanother
advisoryandtwostudentleaderstocollaborateopinions,questions,andideas.Myadvisory
sharedaclassroomwithPaulHealysadvisory.Oncewewereallinanadvisorythestudent
presentersintroducedIslamophobiawithaleadingquestionaskingaboutdifference,whatwedo
withit,andhowitaffectsourlives.Toanswerthecheckinquestionswedidawhiparoundso
thateveryonecouldsharetheiropinions.Afterwehadcompletedansweringthisquestion,as
wellasacheckinquestion,thestudentleadersshowedusfourpicturesofachair,atable,abed,
andabooksothatwecouldlookfortheobjectthatdoesnotbelong.Afterdeliberationbetween
mypeers,thestudentleadersinformedusthatthereisactuallynodifferenceeachobjectbelongs
becausetheyallfittogethersomehow.Thepurposeofthisactivitywassothatwe,thestudents,
couldseehoweverythingbelongssomehow.Plus,wedidthisactivitytoseehowonemustlook
foradifferencesincewedidnotnoticeanythingpeculiarabouttheobjectsuntilweweretoldto
findadifference.Aftertalkingaboutthisactivitywewatchedapowerfulvideoofawhite
womanwalkingwithheryoungdaughter.Asthewomaninthevideowasslowlywalkingshe
heldherdaughtertightlyandeyedastereotypicalmuslimmanwithabeardcarryingalaptop
bag.Thewomanhaltedwhenshenoticedagroupofpoliceofficersrunningtowardsthemanbut

shewassurprisedwhentheofficersranpastthemanandarrestedawhitemanwithabag
instead.Thevideowasquiteshockingsinceitportrayedmanystereotypesandassumptionsthat
peoplemakeaboutonewithouttherebeinganyfactualinformationpresent.Wediscussedhow
thewomansreactionsledustobelievethatshethoughtthemanhadabombinhisbagdueto
herfacialexpressionsandbodylanguage.Afterwatchingthevideotheclassleaderseducatedus
onwhatIslamophobiawas,whatthedifferencebetweenIslamsandMuslimswere,andwhere
Muslimsmainlylive.Afterwelookedatthreedifferentpicturesandstatedourinitial
assumptionsaboutthepeople,wecompletedtheactivitywithafinalreflectiononthedifferences
weobserveatBlackstone.
DuringtheactivityInoticedthattherewasasenseofuncomfortablenesswaveringinthe
room.Attimesitwasdifficultforthestudentleaderstogetpeopletocontributesincepeople
founditdifficulttogathertheirthoughtswithoutoffendinganyone.Therewasanumberoftimes
wherethepresentersmadetheclassdoawhiparoundsothateveryonehadtoexpresswhatwas
ontheirmind.Personally,therewasafewtimeswhereIfeltuncomfortablesinceIslamophobia
isarecenttopicthataffectsanumberofcitizensandIdidnotwanttosaysomethingpotentially
offensive.WhileIdidnotcontributeasmanytimesasIbelieveIshouldhave,Ididcontributea
fewtimesduringwhiparoundsandwhenwewereanalyzingpictures.
Ilearnedthatitisimportanttoembracedifferencesandnotjudgesomeoneorsomething
forbeinguniqueordifferentthanmeorwhatIamusedto.ThisisanideathatIamalready
familiarwith,however,thisfacinghistoryactivityreenforceditwhichcreatedamorestable
imageofthedangersofstereotypesandassumptions.

Intheend,IwasleftwonderinghowMuslimsfeelinAmerica.Wediscussedhow
MuslimsarecommonlyidentifiedintheUnitedStatesandwhatstereotypespeoplemaymake
aboutthem,however,wedidnottalkabouthowMuslimsmayfeelorhowtheyareaffectedby
othersassumptions.Forinstance,IwonderiftheassumptionspeoplemakeaboutMuslims
affecttheiridentityorhowtheymayignorethem.Overall,theIslamophobiafacinghistoryclass
waseyeopeningtothenumberofhorriblelabelspeoplemakeandhowdifferencecanbe
beneficial.
