They are related to and look like sea anemones. Each coral has a limestone skeleton that is left behind when it dies. This is what coral is made up of. 2 Why are coral reefs important? Coral reefs are important because they are home to many animals (including the polyps). These animals can only live in the coral safe from predators. They are also important because they are a fragile environment that is very hard to sustain. The final reason is that they are one of the most beautiful features in the world and are commonly sought after by tourists. 3 Explain why reefs are under threat. Coral reefs are under threat because of coral bleaching which is where the sea level rises and stops the sunlight getting to the algae that photosynthesise and feed the coral. The coral is also under threat because the rise in demand for fish has caused fishermen to go to the coral and fish which is drastically altering the ecosystem. The amount of fish in a coral reef is crucial because if there are no adult fish they cannot breed and there will be no baby fish to live there. Without the fish the algae won’t grow as fast and the coral will die! Harry Dawe
