Bilingualism Awareness
Does a child have to give up their home
language to learn English? The answer is no
because through the study of the brain it has
been learned that a child can contain both the
home language and English. The important
element to this concept is that the child uses
both languages otherwise one language will
be lost. Children sometimes decide to use
only one language usually English since one
becomes easier to use instead of the two.
Children at times will adapt to using English
for social reasons. They will use their home
language with their families.

According to the National Association for the

Education of Young Children (NAYCE)
early childhood ranges from birth to eight
years, because during these years children
build the foundation for later academic
success. The majority of dual-language

Bilingualism Awareness

This month we will work with the following units:

Being bilingual is beneficial not simply in

the area of language development but also in
the area of cognitive skills. Monolingual
individuals dont have to think much about
language. One language integrates what they
know, hear and say. Bilingual individuals are
more aware of what language they are
hearing and using. When listening, they have
to recognize sounds and connect these
sounds to a language in order to give the
sounds meaning. Until then they decide how
to respond. Exercising these skills over a
period of time the brain gets stimulated and
the brain development increases.

From the age of birth to five year olds,
children learn a first and second language in
similar ways. Young children learn through

Bilingualism Awareness
What is code switching in dual-language
learners? Code switching or language mixing
is the usage of two languages at the same
time. Bilingual individuals use a mixture of
both languages when they know another
person speaks both languages as them. Code
switching is appropriate when in
conversations with family and friends but can
be risky in the classroom; this can confuse
children and give them a sense that these two
languages can be interchangeable. A child
can make it a habit to mixing both languages.

development.

Bilingualism Awareness
Is it appropriate for children to code-switch?
When children are learning two languages it
is typical to mix languages because they have
some words in one language and other words
in the other language. The children are
displaying age appropriate practices when
engaging in this kind of communication
style. Research shows that the best way to
teach early literacy skills are to use a
thematic curriculum and repeating
meaningful activities in large group, small
groups and one to one.

Bilingualism Awareness
The best way for a child to learn language is
in social settings through interactions with
other children and adults where they can
express their thoughts, ideas and be
understood. This type of learning required a
safe, welcoming and nurturing environment
to be able to make mistakes and be corrected
in a gentle and respectful manner. Modeling
language and repetition is essential in the
process of learning two languages. Practicing
language will increase productivity and
accuracy in this area of development.
