Furthermore, stateofficials claimed they did not want to alarm residentsand waited more than a
year to intervene in Hoosick Falls, while actively disputing repeatedwamings by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) of unsafe levels of PFOA in the local water supply. Stateofficials also initially
refusedto test residents' private wells for contamination and distributed incorrect telephonenumbersto
individualswho were desperatefor help.
The Cuomo Adminishation repeatedlyclaimedthat they were following EPA guidelineswhile, in
fact, the administration was proactively ignoring EPA advisories and denying the public information they
neededabout their water.
The residentsI represent believe that the Cuomo Administration and DOH perpetuated
and facilitated the consumption of contaminated village water and demonstrated a pathetic level of
accountability and transparency in handling the matter. It is for these reasonsthat I am asking you
to open an in-depth investigation into the state's handling of the Hoosick Falls water crisis. Our
residents deserveanswers and government officials should be held accountable for allowing
families to consume cancer-causingwater.
The Cuomo Administration's apathy toward the situation is insulting and demonstratesnothing
lessthan incompetencyand an extreme disdain for the safety, health, and well-being of thousandsof New
Yorkers. This goesbeyond government inefficiency. This was a premeditatedand carefully executedplan
for the DOH and Cuomo Administration to wash their hands of the situation and isnore the concernsof
residents,hoping they would go away.
I can tell you that the anxiety and confusion of residentshasn't gone away and they deserve
answers.Promisesof legislativehearingsby AssemblymenStevenEnglebrightand Richard Gottfried
turned out to be empff, and Gov. Cuomo's more than 100-daypostponementbeforeeven visiting
Hoosick Falls epitomizeshis disconnectwith upstateresidentsand his myopic approachto public safety.
I firmly believethat the Cuomo Administrationand DOH actively coveredup New York's most
seriouspublic healthcrisis sinceLove Canal and put residentsat risk for many months. This level of
apathy from state leaderswill not be tolerated and I am asking for your help to bring those to justice who
have betrayedthe residentsof Hoosick Falls.
