Children and Learning/Development Goals:
1. Carleigh Broadbent - Goal: Better communication; quit talking like a baby. Gathering
Time will help Carleigh with her communication skills as we talk about spiders
together.
2. Avery Rhodes Goal: Get along well with others. Digging for Sand Bugs will help
Avery work on her goal as she works with other children at the sensory table.
3. Jayda McGary Goal: Recognize letters. S-P-I-D-E-R Matching will help Jayda work on
her goal as she matches the letters together.
4. Todd Williams Goal: Practice ABCs. S-P-I-D-E-R Matching will help Todd work on his
goal as he matches the letters together.
5. Kyler Caffey Goal: Interacting more with others. Digging for Sand Bugs will help
Kyler work on his goal as he works with other children at the sensory table.

Teachers will help the children to count the
spiders eight legs.

Fake spiders and bugs will be set out on the
table with magnifying glasses and flashlights.
Children will use the magnifying glasses to get
a closer look at the bugs. Teachers will
encourage them to count the spiders eight
legs.
The sensory table will be filled with sand. Bugs
will be buried in the sand and the preschoolers
will use sensory tools to dig for the bugs.
Teachers will talk with children about how
spiders eat bugs and also count the spiders
legs with them.

The block area will be set up with toy bugs and


bug catchers to make the area look fun and
inviting for the children to play. The children
will use the blocks and the bug catchers to
play with the bugs. Teachers will talk with
children about how spiders eat bugs and also
count the spiders legs with them.
The dramatic play area will be set up for the
children to pretend that they are at a pet shop.

Teachers will use duct tape to make a spider


web inside of a hula hoop and hang it from an
area on the playground. Children will throw
wadded up newspapers and cotton balls to try
to get them to stick to the web. Teachers will
talk with children about how some spiders spin
webs.

Spray bottles will be filled with water color
paint and children will use them to paint the
snow on the ground.
Children will build with waffle blocks.

Look at this big bug! Would you ever like to eat

Did you know that spiders eat bugs?? What
kind of bugs do you think that they eat? Let a
few children answer. Then hold up pictures of
bugs that spiders eat.

How many legs do you have? Lets count!


How many legs do dogs have? Model counting
on stuffed dog. Same with cat.
Do you know how many legs spiders have?
Model counting with spider puppet. Then
model count with Webbys legs through the
glass.
- Why do you think spiders need 8 legs?
- Possible answers: so they can climb on
walls, to help them stay on their web,
etc.
First tell the story of The Itsy Bitsy Spider with
visuals.
Once there was an itsy bitsy spider. How many
legs does he have? Count together if children
do not answer right away. He decided to climb
up the water spout. Then it started to rain! And
it washed him away! But then the sun came

out and all of the rain dried up. So the itsy


bitsy spider climbed up the spout again.
Do you know a song that sounds like that?
Lets sing it! Then sing the song together with
hand motions.

Description & Objective


Lets sing the Itsy Bitsy Spider one more time. But
when the spider touches your head, go to your
teacher! Ms. _____s group is (then start touching
children on the head).
Description: Teachers will show the children the
activity and point to the picture of the spider and
ask the children what it is. Teachers and children
will talk about how spiders eat bugs, have eight
legs, and how some spin webs. They will then take
turns to match the letters together (see example in
the Resource section) and work on labeling the
letters together.
After doing the activity, read the book that is at
your table.
Objective: Children and teachers will identify
letters and talk about spiders again to help solidify
previously taught concepts.
