forinstallingMacOSXonyouractualcomputer.AndnowthatApplehasreleasedOSXYosemite,it'sonlyfittingthatwe
showyouhowtoinstallYosemiteinavirtualmachineaswell.Forthisguide,we'llbeusingthe"YosemiteZone"distro,
whichisreallyjustarebrandedversionoftheoldNireshdistrothatweusedinourMavericksguide.Whilewe'vealready
shownyouhowtoinstallYosemiteonyouractualcomputerwithYosemiteZone,italsoworksgreatwithvirtualmachines.

CanIinstallOSXonmyPC?

Inessence,thismethodwillletyourunMacOSXfrominsideaprogramwindowinWindows.Asalways,we'regoingto
useVirtualboxforthis.It'simportanttonotethatWindowsvirtualizationprogramsdonot"officially"supportMacOSX,so
youwillnotbeabletoenablefullgraphicssupport.Thistutorialshouldonlybetakenasaproofofconcept.

directlytellyouhowmanycoresyourprocessorhas,lookupyourprocessormodelonWikipediaorGoogle.Youalsowant
tofindoutwhetheryourprocessorismadeby"Intel"or"AMD".WhileYosemiteZonetechnicallyworkswithbothtypesof
processors,ifyouhaveanAMDprocessor,you'llhavetoperformafewextrastepsduringtheinstallation(andthefinal
resultmaynotworkaswell,either).

GeneralRequirements
Virtualbox:Thisvirtualizationsuiteisfree,andthoughitdoesn'tofferofficialsupportforMacOSX,itworks
wellenough.
YosemiteZone:Unfortunately,thestandard"Unibeast"methodforinstallingOSXYosemiteonPCs(which
usesanofficialcopyoftheYosemiteinstaller)doesn'tworkwithVirtualbox.Instead,you'llhavetopirated
"distros"ofMacOSXsuchasYosemiteZone,whichisnowthemostpopulardistroforOSXYosemiteright
now.
YouwillneedtouseabittorrentclienttodownloadtheYosemiteZonediskimagefile,whichisaround5GBin
size.OntheHackintoshZonewebsite,youcangettheappropriatetorrentbychoosing"YosemiteISO
Torrent.zip".(Donotchoosethe"DMGTorrent",asitdoesnotworkwithVirtualbox.)Onceyou'vedownloaded
therighttorrent,openitonyourbittorrentclientsothatyoucandownloadtheactualdiskimagefile.

Step1:Prep
DownloadVirtualbox,installit,andopenitup.Also,ifyouwanttobeabletoviewUSBdevicesfromyourMacOSXvirtual
machine,downloadtheVirtualboxExtensionPackandrunitbeforegoingtoStep2.

Step2:Createanewvirtualmachine.
VirtualboxletsyourunMacOSXwithinWindowsbycreatingavirtualmachine,whichisaprogramthatsimulatesanormal
computer.Tocreateavirtualmachine,openupVirtualboxandclick"New"ontheupperleft.Giveyournewvirtualmachine
aname,andchoose"MacOSX"fortheOSType.
IfyourversionofVirtualboxasksyoutochoosebetween64bitand32bit,besuretochoose64bit.Choosing32bitwill
resultinacritical"GuruMeditation"errorlateron.

Irecommendassigning4GBofRAMtothevirtualmachine,butyoucanassignaslittleas2GBofRAM.Everytimeyou
turnonMacOSX,thatRAMthatyouassignherewillbeusedtorunthevirtualmachine.TheRAMwillbegivenbackto
yournormalcomputerafteryouturnVirtualboxoff.

You'llthenneedtocreatea"virtualharddrive"forthevirtualmachine.Virtualboxwillaskyouwhattypeofdriveyouwant
tocreate:VDI,VDMK,orVHD.VDIistheoriginalformatforVirtualbox,whileVDMKistheformatusedbyVMWare.If
you'reconsideringgettingacopyofVMWare,youmightwanttochooseVDMK.Otherwise,justchooseVDI.Irecommend
creatingadynamicallyexpandingdrivetheotheroption("fixedsizedstorage")isawasteofspace.

You'llneedtoallocateatleast10GBofspaceforthisnewvirtualharddrivethedefaultof20GBwillworkfine.

Step3:Giveyournewvirtualmachineanoperatingsystem.
Yourvirtualmachinewillnowbecreated.Butdon'tstopnowyoustillneedtochangeafewsettingsbeforeyourmachine
willactuallywork.YournewvirtualmachinewillshowupontheleftcolumnoftheVirtualboxstartpage.SelectyourMac
OSXvirtualmachine(singleclick)fromthemainpageofVirtualbox,andopenupthevirtualmachinesettings.Oncethe
settingsopenup,goto"System"anduncheckthe"EnableEFI"box.Thisisbyfarthemostimportantsinglesettingthat
youwillneedtochange.

EFI,whichstandsforExtendedFirmwareInterface,isafeaturethathelpsoperatingsystemsstartup.Unfortunately,Mac
OSXrequires"special"EFI,sotheEFIthatVirtualboxusesdoesn'twork.
Onceyou'redonewiththat,gotothesettingsfor"Storage".Inthestoragetreebox,you'llseeaCDiconlabeled"Empty".
Clickonitandclick"ChooseavirtualCD/DVDdiskfile".Inthewindowthatpopsup,choosethe.isofileforYosemite
Zonethisfilewillprobablybenamed"YosemiteZone.iso".

Thisway,whenyourvirtualmachinestartsforthefirsttime,itwillbootintotheYosemiteZoneinstallerprogram.

Step4:InstallOSXYosemite
Startupyourvirtualmachine.YouwillcomeuptotheYosemiteZonebootscreen,withoneoptiontoselect:Yosemite
Zone.Pressthe"Enter"keyonyourkeyboard.
NOTE1:IfyourcomputerusesanAMDprocessor,youwillhavetotypethebootflag"amd"or"amd64"(withoutquotation
marks)whichflagyouneeddependsonyourspecificprocessor,sotestoneflagatatime.Typethebootflag"amdfx"
(alsowithoutquotationmarks)ifyourAMDprocessorhas"FX"initsmodelname.
NOTE2:VirtualboxmayhaveproblemsbootingMacOSXifyourcomputerusesanIntelHaswellprocessor(i.e.ifyour
computerwasbuilt/boughtin2013orlater).Ifthisisthiscase,youwillhavetotrickVirtualboxintothinkingthatyour
processorisactuallyanoldermodel.Todothis,opentheCommandPromptinWindows(makesureyouareloggedintoan
AdministratoraccountonWindows).YoucandothisbyopeningtheStartMenu,andtyping"commandprompt"intothe
StartMenusearchbar.Then,typethefollowingcommandintotheCommandPrompt.
cd"C:\ProgramFiles\Oracle\Virtualbox"
ThiscommandwillchangethefocusoftheCommandPrompttotheprogramfolderforVirtualbox(ifyouinstalledVirtualbox
somewheredifferent,thenchangethecommandtowhereveryouinstalledit).Next,typeinthiscommand:

Thiscommandactivates"vboxmanage",acommandlineprogramincludedwithVirtualboxthatallowsyoutoeditthe
propertiesofyourvirtualmachine,includingitsbuiltinresolutions.Replace"Nameofvirtualmachine"withthenameof
yourvirtualmachine(noquotationmarks)youcanfindthenameofyourvirtualmachineintheleftpaneoftheVirtualbox
mainwindow.Thiscommandshoulddothetrick.Source

Afteryoupressthe"enter"key,waitafewseconds,andthevirtualmachinewillautomaticallystarttheMacOSXinstaller.
(Thisstartupprocessmaytakeanywherefrom30secondsto15minutes,dependingonyourcomputer'shardware.)
Eventually,youwillreachthewelcomepageoftheinstaller.

Continue,andyouwilleventuallyreachapagethatasksyoufora"destination"foryourMacinstall.Atfirst,youronly
optionwillbetheYosemiteZoneISOfile,whichisn'tgoingtoworkyoucan'tinstallOSXYosemiteontheISOitself.
Instead,startupDiskUtility(locatedundertheUtilitiesmenu).

MacOSXcanonlybeinstalledonacompletelycleandisk,soyouneedtouseDiskUtilitytowipeyourVirtualboxhard
drive.ClickontheVirtualboxharddriveinDiskUtilityanderaseit.Don'tworry,there'snothingimportantonit.

OntheinstallationsummarypageforMacOSX,theVirtualboxharddiskshouldnowbeshowingup.Clickthe"Customize"
buttononthelowerlefthandcornerofthesummarypage.Thisiswhereusingadistrobecomesreallyuseful:Yosemite
ZoneallowsyoutoinstallextraHackintoshdriversandkexts,straightfromtheOSXYosemiteinstaller.

ThedefaultselectionwillenableMacOSXtobootfromthevirtualmachinewithoutanyassistance.Theareonlytwo
thingsyouneedtochange:
UncheckInstallAudioDrivers(Kexts)andInstallNetworkDrivers(Kexts).Thesetwooptionsarechecked
bydefault.Normally,theywillallowYosemiteZonetoautomaticallydetectyourcomputer'saudiocodecand
ethernetcontroller,andinstalltheappropriatekextssothatyouraudioandinternetwillworkimmediatelyinMac
OSX.However,bothaudioandethernetshouldalreadyworkbydefaultinVirtualbox,soneitherofthese
optionsisreallynecessary.
UncheckGraphics>GraphicsEnabler=Yes.Thisoptionisalsocheckedbydefault.Normally,itallowsMac
OSXtoworkbetterwithyourcomputer'sgraphicscard.However,Virtualboxdoesn'tsupportMacOSX
graphicsanyways,sothisoptionisessentiallypointlessforvirtualmachines.Allitdoesisdecreasethedefault
screensizeofyourvirtualmachinefrom1280x1024to1024x768.
Onceyouhaveselectedtheappropriateoptionsfromthe"Customize"screen,returntotheinstallationsummarypageand
click"Install".Thiswilltakeanywherefrom10minutestoanhour,dependingonyourcomputer'shardware.
Whentheinstallationfinishes,theOSXinstallerwillprobablycrashanddisplayacrashlog.ThisisnormalOSXYosemite
hasstillinstalledsuccessfully.Nowproceedtothenextstep.

Step5:Bootitup
Restartyourvirtualmachine,andejecttheYosemiteZoneISOfilefromyourvirtualDVDdrive.Todothis,rightclickonthe
CDiconatthebottomrightoftheVirtualboxwindow,andunchecktheYosemiteZonefile(probablynamed"Yosemite
Zone.iso").Yourmousecursorwillprobablybetrappedinsidethevirtualmachine.Presstheright"Ctrl"keyonyour
keyboardtoallowyourmousetoescape.

AfterejectingYosemiteZone,restartyourvirtualmachineagain.Now,atthebootupscreen,you'llseeanAppleiconforthe
harddrivewhereyouinstalledYosemite(also,thescreenofyourvirtualmachinemightbebiggerthanbefore).

OSXYosemitewillnowstart.Thiswilltakeanywherefrom30secondsto15minutes,dependingonyourcomputer's
hardware.YoushouldeventuallybeledtotheMacOSXsetupscreen.Fillitout,thenmissionaccomplished!

havetoenableincreasethescreenresolutionofyourvirtualmachine,whichisprobablystillstuckat1280x1024(oreven
1024x768).

NOTE1:OnecommonissuewithYosemiteZoneisthatittendstolagoutoftheaccountcreationprocess,andskip
straighttotheMacOSXloginscreenbeforeyoucanmakeyourownaccount.Ifthishappens,simplylogintoMacOSX
withthefollowingcredentials:

Thiswilllogyouintothe"root"accountofMacOSX.Fromhere,opentheSystemPreferencesapp,goto"Users&
Groups",andcreateyourownaccount.(Wedon'trecommendthatyouusetherootaccountpermanently,becauseitis
insecure.)
NOTE2:AnothercommonissuewithYosemiteZoneisthattheethernet(internet)mightnotworkimmediatelywithinyour
virtualmachine.Ifthisisthecase,youmaybeabletofixtheproblembyswitchingyourvirtualmachinetoadifferent
NetworkAdapter.

Todothis,turnoffyourvirtualmachine.Thenselectyourvirtualmachine(singleclick)fromthemainwindowofVirtualbox,
andopenupthesettings.Goto"Network",andopenupthe"Advanced"section.Fromthere,changethe"AdapterType"
fromthedefault"IntelPRO/1000TServer"tothealternative"IntelPRO/1000MTServer"instead.

Step6:Makethescreenbigger
Thoughthisstepisoptional,Istillrecommendyoudoitanyways.Anyways,whenyoufirstuseyourvirtualmachine,you'll
probablynoticeonething:yourscreenresolutionis1280x1024(or1024x768ifyouforgottoturnoffGraphicsEnabler=Yes).
SinceVirtualboxdoesn't"technically"supportMacOSX,there'snoofficialwaytochangethis.Buthere'showyoucan
changeitanyways.
First,youneedtoaccessorg.Chameleon.boot.plist,thesettingsfileforyourvirtualmachine'sMacOSXbootloader.You
candothisfromFinder,thefilebrowserbuiltintoMacOSX.However,FinderhidesyourharddrivesinYosemiteby
default.Tounhidethem,openFinder,andclickonFile>PreferencesinthemenubaratthetopofMacOSX.Underthe
"Sidebar"settings,check"Harddisks",sothatFinderwilldisplayyourvirtualmachine'sharddisksinthesidebar.

Oncethat'sdone,accessyourvirtualmachine'smainharddrivethroughFinder,andgotothefolder"Extra".Openthefile
org.Chameleon.boot.plist.Between<dict>and</dict>inthefile,insertthefollowingline.

1600x900resolution,typein"1600x900x32".Onceyou'vesavedit,turnoffthevirtualmachine.
Next,turnoffyourvirtualmachine.OpentheCommandPromptinWindows(makesureyouareloggedintoan
AdministratoraccountonWindows).YoucandothisbyopeningtheStartMenu,andtyping"commandprompt"intothe
StartMenusearchbar.Then,typethefollowingcommandintotheCommandPrompt.

Presstheenterkeytosubmitthecommand.Oncethat'sdone,startyourvirtualmachineagain.Yourvirtualmachinewill
nowbootYosemiteinfullresolution.Congrats!

I'lljustrepeatwhatIsaidinmyothertwoVirtualboxguides.InstallingMacOSXonavirtualmachineisexcellentpractice
fortherealthing:installingMacOSXonyouractualcomputer.Don'tgettoocomfortable,though.Comparedtomost
computers,Virtualboxvirtualmachinesarevery"vanilla",meaningthatthey'reverycompatiblewithMacOSXinthefirst
place.Youcan'tcountonbeingthatluckywitharealPC.
Andevenifyoudon'tplanondoingthisforreal,withaHackintosh,it'sstillareallycoolthingtotryoutovertheweekend.
