1 Exercise Part B, #14

Longest side(b) is 6ft less(-6) than twice the smallest side(a); medium side(c) is 5ft larger(+5) than smallest side(a).
If total perimeter(P) is 47ft, what are the lengths of the 3 sides?
b (2x - 6)

a (x)

Rectangle: P = a + b + c
If we substitute side a with the variable x, we now have the
equation:

P = x + (2x - 6) + (x + 5)

c (x + 5)

Knowing the total perimeter length, the formula adjusted:

47 = x + (2x - 6) + (x + 5)

Simplification: We do this by combining like numbers

47 = 4x - 6 + 5

simplify further by solving the addition/subtraction content

47 = 4x - 1
+1
+1
48 = 4x
4
4
x = 12

First step in solving for x is to add 1 to both sides of equal sign

Now solve for x by dividing both sides by 4

Substitute 12 into the equations for each side

side a(x) = 12ft, side b(2x - 6) = 18ft, side c(x + 5) = 17ft
