Foreword
This book is a compilation of the series of 100 Questions about
Gedatsu which were originally published in the Gedatsu Companion from
October 1999 to September 2004. I tried to illustrate the entire picture of
Gedatsu Kongos thoughts and practice by answering various possible
questions. I believe this will cover all the basics about Gedatsu.
This book contains only my personal understanding of Gedatsu and not
authorized by anyone else. It is what I have grasped through my 30-year
Gedatsu study and practice, and is what I have faith in. This is my
understanding of Gedatsu at present. I hope this book will help you in your
understanding of Gedatsu.

100 QUESTIONS ABOUT GEDATSU

Gedatsu is not difficult to study. The basic structure of the teaching is very
simple. If you clearly grasp its basics, you will be able to understand Gedatsu
and practice it in your daily life properly. You will be able to attain peace and
happiness.
Let us now study the basics of Gedatsu. I will answer your questions
as simply as possible. Most important in Gedatsu study is to clearly
understand the meaning of each lesson, object of worship, practice, etc. If you
have questions, dont hesitate to ask the reverends. You should not leave
questions unanswered. When you clearly understand the meaning and practice
it, your understanding of Gedatsu will be more profound. Lets begin!
Question 1: What is Tenjinchigi?
Answer: Tenjinchigi, which literally means God of Heaven and Earth or God
of the Universe, is the main object of worship in Gedatsu Church. This
represents the Universal Life Force, which permeates throughout the universe
and allows all beings to exist. Tenjinchigi is enshrined at the center of the
altar.
Gedatsu Kongo explains Tenjinchigi as, The law that controls the
entire universe, the principle of universal development and its driving force
and mercy. These are all the manifestation of the divine will of Tenjinchigi.
Life power which creates and nurtures all living things such as humans,
animals, and plants, and which controls the movements of celestial bodies,
four seasonal changes, all natural phenomena, etc., is enshrined as Tenjinchigi
or God of the Universe.
Think about what makes your heart beat, blood to circulate, foods to
digest, ability to think, your limbs to move, etc. Who makes these functions
possible? Who makes dogs bark and birds sing? Who makes trees grow and
flowers bloom? All of these are the function of Tenjinchigi. Tenjinchigi is the
very source of everything. Tenjinchigi cannot be seen, but permeates
throughout the universe, working all the time. In other words, Tenjinchigi is
everything to us. Therefore, it is quite natural for us to worship Tenjinchigi
and express appreciation.
Question 2: What is Gochi Nyorai?

Answer: There is one universe and its activities are carried on regularly
without interruption. A Creative Principle operates within the activity of the
Universal Life Force. Tantric Buddhism categorizes this Creative Principle
into five aspects of the Universal Life. This is called Gochi Nyorai, which
literally means the Universal Buddha of Five Wisdoms.
These five aspects are Dainichi Nyorai, Ashuku Nyorai, Hosho Nyorai,
Amida Nyorai, and Shaka Nyorai. Each aspect manifests a particular phase of
the Universal Life Force. These five aspects are not separated from each
other. They are one.
The meaning of these five Nyorais is as follows.
Dainichi Nyorai represents the wisdom of knowing the essence of all
existence.
Ashuku Nyorai represents the wisdom which reflects everything as it
is, like a clear mirror.
Hosho Nyorai represents the wisdom of observing the ultimate
sameness of everything.
Amida Nyorai represents the wisdom of understanding the distinctive
features of all phenomena.
Shaka Nyorai represents the wisdom of accomplishing what has to be
done to benefit sentient beings.
This explanation may be difficult to understand. It is enough for you
to understand that Gochi Nyorai represents the Life Force which permeates
throughout the universe and makes all things exist and function. Therefore,
Gochi Nyorai and Tenjinchigi cannot be separated. They are one in essence.
Tenjinchigi represents the Universal Life Force focusing on substance, and
Gochi Nyorai is the embodiment of its activities.
Tenjinchigi is enshrined in Shinto style. But, Gochi Nyorai is
enshrined in Buddhist manner. This is an expression of Gedatsu Kongos view
on religion. He emphasized Gedatsu is not biased to any particular religious
tradition. We should respect the essence of all religions, which should be the
same.
Question 3: What is Gedatsu Kongo?
Answer: Gedatsu Kongo is the founder of Gedatsu Church. His soul is
enshrined at the right side of the altar.
Gedatsu Kongo was born in Saitama prefecture, Japan in 1881. After

his career as a lay person, he received a revelation from God at the age of 48.
He established Gedatsu Church in 1929. He devoted himself to saving people
until his passing in 1948. His soul is still watching and guiding us from the
spiritual realm. We should appreciate his daily guidance and protection, and
practice Gedatsu for the happiness of all people and ourselves. Please read his
biography.
Question 4: What does shiho-hairei and shi-hakushu mean?
Answer: This is Shinto rite when you worship God. Shiho means four
directions, which implies the whole universe. Tenjinchigi or God of the
Universe is everywhere. Therefore, we pay respect to God who resides in all
directions by clapping hands four times. Hand clapping is also Shinto rite.
When we are happy or praise someone, we clap hands. Similarly we clap
hands to express our joy and appreciation to praise God.
Question 5: What is the difference between hairei and raihai?
Answer: This is Japanese mannerism to pay respect. It may be difficult for
Americans to distinguish between these two. The meaning of these two is
exactly the same. They both mean to bow or pay respect. When you pay
respect to Shinto gods and deities, you say hairei and clap hands four times.
But, when you worship Buddhist deities and other objects, you say raihai and
do not clap hands. In Gedatsu Church, we pay respect to Tenjinchigi by
saying shiho-hairei and clap hands four times, because Tenjinchigi is
enshrined in a Shinto way. But, we say raihai and do not clap hands when we
worship Gochi Nyorai and Gedatsu Kongo, because they are enshrined in a
Buddhist manner.
Outside of LA Church building, Ujigami or local guardian deity is
enshrined in a Shinto manner. Therefore, we pay respect to Ujigami by saying
shiho-hairei and clap hands four times. But, Bato-Kannon Deity and Jizo
Deity are enshrined in a Buddhist way. So, we say raihai and do not clap
hands at these sites.
In the area of Sacramento Church, there are many objects to worship.
The manners of worship at each site are as follows.
Shiho-hairei and Shi-hakushu (four hand claps): Tenjinchigi,
Amehachidai-Ryuojin (Suireijin, Benzaiten Deity)
Raihai and no hand clap: Fudo Deity, Bato-Kannon Deity, Roku7

You may be confused. But, please appreciate this as Gedatsu Church
protocol.
Question 6: What does the mirror on the altar mean?
Answer: A mirror reflects everything as it is. Similarly God loves us all
impartially with boundless compassion. When you pay respect to God, you
see yourself in the mirror. This means, whenever you face the altar, you
reflect on yourself, and recognize your innermost divine nature within
yourself.
Question 7: Why do we offer water, rice and salt on the altar?
Answer: We offer these things as a token of appreciation to God for nurturing
us. Water and salt is essential for human existence. Rice is the main food for
Japanese people. Therefore, by offering these we express appreciation and
gratitude toward God.
Question 8: Why do we offer sake on the altar?
Answer: This is the way Japanese worship God. Sake is made from rice
which is the main food for Japanese people. From ancient times Japanese
people regarded sake as a sacred drink. Sake is indispensable for Shinto
rituals and festivals. We offer sake to God and deities, and then we share joy
and happiness with God and deities by drinking sake.
Question 9: There are many kinds of paper ofuda enshrined at home.
What is the significance of these ofuda?
Answer: Gedatsu Kongo left these ofuda for our happiness. The Holy Goho
is inscribed on each of these ofuda. When you enshrine the ofuda in your
home, you and your family will be protected by the sacred power of the Holy
Goho. Besides enshrining these paper ofuda in your home, you should
remember to try to practice Gedatsu teaching daily and benefit the world.
This is Gedatsu Kongos wish for us.
The significance of each ofuda will be explained as follows. The
significance of Tenjinchigi, Gochi Nyorai, and Gedatsu Kongo has been

already explained. Therefore, the explanation of these ofuda will be omitted

here. The paper ofuda must be changed to new ones at the end of each year.
Question 10: What is the significance of Roku Jizo-son ofuda?
Answer: Roku Jizo Deity is enshrined and revered as the Bodhisattva that
renders salvation to mankind in the six lower realms of existence. These six
planes of existence into which man is reborn are the hells (Jigoku), pretas
(Gaki), animals (Chikusho), asuras (Shura), men (Ningen), and the devas
(Tenjo). The transmigration of ones soul into one of these six planes of
existence depends upon the nature of his karma. Roku Jizo is the deity
designated to intercede for those whose karmic circumstances have caused
them to be placed in an unfortunate situation in this earthly existence. This
deity also gives guidance to the spirits of the departed persons so they may
enjoy peace in the spiritual world.
This deity is enshrined at the grounds of Sacramento Church. Jizo is
also enshrined at the back of the Ujigami shrine at LA Church.
Gedatsu Kongo stated that Roku Jizo guides all souls and spirits, who
received Amacha Kuyo, to their proper positions to rest. As a general rule,
this ofuda should be enshrined at the left side of the inside of the Butsudan.
Question 11: What is the significance of Mihashira-Ogami ofuda?
Answer: Mihashira-Ogami literally means the Three Guardian Deities of the
Home. The three guardian deities are those of earth, fire, and water. Cooking
foods is very important for our daily existence. We cook and eat meal
everyday. Today we usually cook by using a gas range or a microwave oven.
But in ancient times, people cooked by using an oven made of earth. Fire and
water is essential for cooking. They especially respected earth, fire and water
as essential elements for human life.
This ofuda should be enshrined at the kitchen of the home. Every
morning before cooking, we should pray to this deity saying, Thank you very
much for your daily protection of our home. Please guide us appropriately in
cooking. (Shiho-hairei and Shi-hakushu.)

Question 12: What is the significance of the ofuda of Muen-inin-banrei, or

the unrested spirits of wasted entities?

Answer: The wasted entities here means seeds of humans, which are human
sperm and ova. Gedatsu Kongo respected human sperm and ovum as life,
even though they are not in human form. Most of the human sperm and ova
are wasted without becoming human beings. Gedatsu Kongo stated we should
respect those spirits who could not become humans, and live fully for them.
This ofuda should be placed on the wall of bathroom.
Question 13: What is the significance of Amegoshiki-Dai-Tenku-Ogami
and Shiho-barai?
Answer: Amegoshiki-Dai-Tanku-Ogami, together with Shiho-barai, protect
our home and make all souls and spirits connected to our home, rest in peace.
This ofuda should be placed at the upper part of inside of the entrance. Shihobarai should be placed each corner of the house counterclockwise, not facing
each other. Before placing these ofuda, you should pray saying, Please make
all spirits connected to this house, rest in peace. (Shiho-hairei and Shihakushu.)
Question 14: What is the significance of the ofuda of Ichiyo-Raifuku and
Risshun-Daikichi?
Answer: Ichiyo-Raifuku literally means good fortune comes with New
Years sunrise. This is the ofuda of the guardian deity of the year. This ofuda
should be placed at the left side of Amegoshiki-Dai-Tenku-Ogami at inside of
the entrance. Risshun-Daikichi literally means good fortune with the coming
of spring. This ofuda should be placed at the right side of Amegoshiki-DaiTenku-Ogami at inside of the entrance on the first day of spring (the 4 th of
February).
These ofuda of Ichiyo-Raifuku and Risshun-Daikichi are Gedatsu
Kongos Christmas gifts for all Gedatsu members.
Question 15: What does the Kuyo mean?
Answer: The concept of Kuyo may be foreign to American people, because
this is from Japanese or Asian tradition. However, I believe this could be a
universal and important concept for all mankind. The Kuyo literally means

mutual support. Many people and living things support our life. Without their
support, our everyday life is impossible. We receive immeasurable blessings
from our ancestors and people in the past. We must remember this. The Kuyo
is to appreciate the blessings we receive from many people and living things
that sacrificed their lives for us, and pray for their peace. Gedatsu Church has
a unique practice of Kuyo for souls and spirits, and this is called Amacha
Kuyo.
Question 16: What is the significance of the Amacha Kuyo?
Answer: The Amacha Kuyo is Gedatsu Churchs unique and very sacred
practice of Kuyo for all souls and spirits. We perform Kuyo for souls and
spirits connected to our family and ourselves by pouring Amacha or Holy Tea
on wooden Kuyo plaques that are inscribed with the names of the spirits. This
Amacha Kuyo activity will cleanse the negative tradition of our family, and
allow all souls and spirits connected to our family and ourselves rest in peace.
Amacha, which literally means the heavenly tea, is a kind of herb. This
has been widely known in Asia from ancient times. This herb has strong
efficacy to console souls and spirits, and purify mans mind and body. Our
founder Gedatsu Kongo found this effectiveness and used Amacha to bless
spirits and souls. When you perform Amacha Kuyo with sincerity, this
potency of Amacha along with the mysterious power of Holy Goho will
dissolve the negative traits of your family line and make all spirits connected
to your family rest in peace.
There are three ways to perform Amacha Kuyo: 1) Amacha Kuyo with
the Kuyo plaques, 2) Amacha Kuyo with the Kuyo stupa, 3) Amacha Kuyo by
spreading Amacha on property, ocean, rivers, or lakes.
Question 17: What is the significance of the Kuyo plaques?
Answer: When Gedatsu Kongo started Amacha Kuyo, he used paper, on
which the names of souls and spirits were described. He put the paper in the
Amacha bowl, and performed Kuyo by pouring Amacha on the paper. But,
the paper was reduced to pulp soon. He then changed this method, and began
to use thin cotton cloth. He wrote the names of spirits on a small piece of
white cotton cloth. He put the cloth in the Amacha bowl, and poured Amacha
on it. Some time later he changed this method again, and began to use
wooden Kuyo plaques. We use this method today.

The Kuyo plaque is a wooden plaque, on which the names of souls and
spirits are described and the Holy Goho is inscribed in red ink. When you
pour Amacha on the Kuyo plaques with sincere appreciation, the souls and
spirits will rest in peace. We have many kinds of Kuyo plaques. Please ask
the reverends which plaques you need to perform Kuyo.
But, everyone needs to perform Amacha Kuyo with the following five
basic plaques: 1) Ancestral souls of _____ and _____ families, 2) Unrested
souls connected to _____ family and ancestors, 3) Unrested souls connected
to _____ family and ancestors concerning monetary and sexual offenses,
negative thoughts and unnatural deaths, 4) Unrested spirits of wasted entities
connected to _____ family and ancestors, 5) Spirits of all living things
connected to _____ family and ancestors.
Question 18: What is the significance of the Kuyo plaque entitled
Ancestral souls of _____ and _____families?
Answer: We were born as humans through our parents, and our parents were
also born through their parents. If we retrace the past like this, the origin of
our life will go back to prehistoric days. When we consider all the endeavors
our ancestors persevered in order to sustain our everlasting life from ancient
times until today, we should be grateful. Our parents bore us and toiled to
bring us up. Countless blessings have been poured to create our present
status. Not only did our ancestors transmit life generation after generation,
they pioneered the lands and fields, shedding blood and perspiration, and they
built a fine, rich country.
Thinking about those ancestors efforts, we realize that our lives and
country are standing on the great blessings provided by our ancestors through
tremendous efforts. That is, we now exist, without any exceptions, as a fruit
of countless blessings of our ancestors. And, when we really wake up to this
fact, we can build a truly happy and fulfilled life, living day by day with
wonderfully composed and peaceful minds.
Gedatsu Kongo stated, Not only did our ancestors transmit life and
build a rich country while piling earnest efforts in the past, but they continue
to protect and guide us today. They instill pure love on us from the spiritual
world. When we long for them, we can feel their love deeply. Therefore, if
you continue to pour Amacha on the Kuyo plaque, which Gedatsu Kongo said
was a bridge between the visible and invisible worlds, with sincere gratitude,
the protection and guidance of ancestors will really come into being and you

will experience the splendor of them.

Question 19: What is the significance of the Kuyo plaque entitled
Unrested souls connected to _____ family and ancestors?
Answer: At the time Gedatsu Kongo was alive, Kuyo plaques which enable
persons to realize and correct wrong thoughts that were passed from ancestors
to descendants, such as grudge, jealousy, envy, conflict, and self-conceit, were
provided quite often. The members at that time, who realized their own faulty
characters, from ancestors to themselves, such as resentful nature or quick
temper, continued Kuyo with repentance for wrong dispositions and made
serious efforts to correct them. Through Kuyo and corrective effort over a
period of time, these characteristics disappeared little by little.
Souls who do not rest in the spiritual world provide us important
lessons. If you have a wrong attitude in life and live with egotistical thoughts,
you will eventually be neglected by other people and be lonely. After your
death, your soul will not be able to rest in peace. We all have this kind of selfcenteredness, which was inherited from our ancestors. This Kuyo plaque
reminds us of our selfish tendency in life. When you perform Amacha Kuyo
through this Kuyo plaque, you should scrutinize yourself and try to correct
your egotistical attitude in life. You will then be able to live happily. This will
also be the path of your ancestors peaceful rest.
Question 20: What is the significance of the Kuyo plaque entitled
Unrested souls connected to _____ family and ancestors concerning
monetary and sexual offenses, negative thoughts and unnatural deaths?
Answer: The significance of this Kuyo plaque is essentially the same as that
of the plaque mentioned above (#19). Why should we have this plaque then?
It is because our negative thoughts such as grudge, jealousy, envy, etc. are
mainly connected to money, sex, and negative aspects of our desires. We have
strong attachment for money and sex. You may think you are indifferent to
money. But, if you have a chance to get a million dollars, you will be aware
of your strong sense of attachment for money. Sometimes we hear stories
about children of a wealthy man who died, fighting each other for the large
fortune he left. We have to understand we all have this kind of deep
attachment for money. The same can be said about sex.
When we insult or hurt other people, they will have a strong sense of

grudge and hate toward you. This negative feeling is a kind of strong energy,
which cannot be seen. This energy will be lingering around you and affect
your life. We may sometimes hurt other people unknowingly. We should
think about this. When you perform Amacha Kuyo through this plaque, you
apologize for your past deeds that hurt other people knowingly or
unknowingly. You should endeavor to correct your negative attitude toward
other people, and have loving kindness toward them. This is the path to
console souls and spirits and make them rest in peace.
It may be hard to understand what unrested souls concerning
unnatural deaths mean. When a person meets an unnatural death such as
suicide, drowning, accident, etc., it is said that the persons family line has
some tendencies for negative thoughts and disrespect toward life. When you
perform Amacha Kuyo through this plaque, you scrutinize yourself and try to
correct your negative attitude toward life.
When you seriously consider these matters, you will be able to
understand that it is your ancestors precious gifts to convey their faulty
characteristics, which you should be aware of and correct. By continuing our
efforts to rectify these characteristics that we received from our ancestors, we
not only discipline our mind, but we learn to approach people who hold
similar characteristics with understanding. After all, in endeavoring to
straighten our faulty nature, by performing Kuyo apologizing for these
thoughts, not only do we fulfill our task to pass healthy spirits to our
descendants permanently, we also grow and save minds of other people by
understanding their afflictions and sufferings. By continuing Kuyo and
growing as a person like this, we will be able to make ancestors who
tormented themselves with the same characteristics rest in peace.
Question 21: What is the significance of the Kuyo plaque entitled
Unrested spirits of wasted entities connected to _____ family and ancestors?
Answer: The words wasted entities here mean sperms and ova, which are
seeds of our life. Gedatsu Kongo put much importance on the seeds of human
beings. Even one sperm or ovum has the capacity to become a human being.
The innumerable sperms and ova represent our ancestors, descendants and us.
For the countless seeds of life which were wasted in the process of passing on
life from our ancestors to us and to our descendants, we do Kuyo for the
unrested spirits of wasted seeds of life, vowing that we will try to live as
worthy delegates.

Question 22: What is the significance of the Kuyo plaque entitled Spirits
of all living things connected to _____ family and ancestors?
Answer: This Kuyo is for all the natural lives that have supported our
existence from the time of our remote ancestors to our present selves. For
example, a fish on our dinner table, and lumber that is used for our homes and
furniture were given their precious existence by God, just as we are. Thanks
to their sacrifice, we can sustain our daily life. Thus we are able to exist day
by day helped by countless natural blessings. With deep appreciation for this
and sincere penitence for wasting precious lives on earth, we perform Kuyo
for birds, animals, insects, fish, trees, and plants, praying for their spirits to
rest in peace.
Question 23: Why should we perform the Amacha Kuyo?
Answer: Ive explained the significance of the five basic Amacha Kuyo
plaques. If you read the words inscribed on the plaques carefully, you will be
able to understand the significance of Amacha Kuyo more deeply. However,
the words are written in Japanese. I would like to explain the meaning of the
words.
On the Kuyo plaque of ancestral souls, the names of the families are
inscribed in the center. Beside these words, there are written the following
words: All souls and spirits connected to the family and ancestors including
relatives, friends, and unrested souls and spirits. And written on the back of
the plaque, By receiving Amacha Kuyo through this plaque, all souls and
spirits will rest in peace instantly. The Holy Goho inscribed on both sides of
the plaque. If you read these words, you can understand that you perform
Amacha Kuyo for all souls and spirits connected to you and your family
through this plaque only.
Needless to say, we have received immeasurable blessings from many
people and things from ancient times, especially from our ancestors. Our
present life is because of their blessings totally. Besides, we are always
protected and guided by the souls of our ancestors, who are unseen. We
perform Amacha Kuyo through this plaque, with sincere appreciation to our
ancestors and all souls and spirits connected to our families.
On other Kuyo plaques, the names of various souls and spirits are
inscribed in the center. Beside the names, the following are written: This

Amacha Kuyo will make all souls and spirits rest in peace completely. And
on its back, All souls and spirits will completely rest in peace, are written.
The Holy Goho is inscribed on both sides of the plaque.
Amacha Kuyo is a very holy practice. This sacredness is beyond our
intellectual understanding. Only when you actually perform Amacha Kuyo
for souls and spirits with sincere appreciation and respect, will you be able to
feel its sacredness. By practicing Amacha Kuyo in your daily life, your sense
of appreciation will be cultivated more deeply. This feeling of gratitude will
be the foundation of your happiness.
Question 24: What is the significance of the Kuyo stupa?
Answer: Members perform Amacha Kuyo through Kuyo plaques at home.
Each church has Kuyo stupa instead of Kuyo plaques. Kuyo plaques are for
Amacha Kuyo mainly of souls and spirits connected to each family. But,
Kuyo stupa is for general Kuyo of all souls and spirits. However, the essence
of both of these is the same. When you sincerely perform Amacha Kuyo
through Kuyo plaques or Kuyo stupa with appreciation and respect, all souls
and spirits will rest in peace.
The stupa has an octagonal shape. On its top and four sides, the names
of Gochi Nyorai and the Holy Goho are inscribed. This means that the Kuyo
stupa is a symbol of Gochi Nyorai, which stands for the whole universe. On
the four sides between each name of Gochi Nyorai, the following names of
souls and spirits are inscribed.
All ancestral souls
All unrested spirits of wasted entities connected to ancestors
All unrested souls connected to ancestors concerning sexual offense
and negative thoughts
Spirits of all living things since time immemorial
This expresses that our existence is totally due to the blessings of many
people and living things in the past and at the present. We all receive
immeasurable blessings from them, and we still receive blessings from various
souls and spirits. The Kuyo stupa expresses these elements of our existence.
When you perform Amacha Kuyo through Kuyo stupa, you should
remember immeasurable blessings you receive from them and appreciate
them. It is important to promise yourself to become a person who could
benefit people and the world as a token of appreciation.
Kuyo stupa is located only at church. Members cannot possess the

stupa. However, if you have a Gedatsu meeting at your home, you could have
a small Kuyo stupa.
Question 25: What is the significance of the Kuyo of spreading Amacha
on the ground or the sea?
Answer: We have another way of performing Amacha Kuyo besides through
Kuyo plaques or Kuyo stupa. It is the Kuyo of spreading Amacha on the
ground or the sea. This Amacha Kuyo is done for the purpose of consoling all
souls and spirits connected to the area and have them rest in peace.
The properties where we live today have had various connections with
many kinds of people and living things since ancient times. In America, many
Native Americans used to live all over the country a long time before we
moved here. Our present life is due to their blessings in various aspects.
Therefore, it is important to appreciate their blessings we receive from our
properties by spreading Amacha on the ground as often as possible. Through
this practice, our sense of appreciation towards our properties and all souls
and spirits connected to the ground will be cultivated more deeply. When the
souls and spirits receive the sacred Amacha Kuyo and your feeling of
appreciation, they will rest in peace and protect you and your property.
Besides this Kuyo for the property, we do various kinds of Kuyo by
spreading Amacha. For example in many cases, the areas where traffic
accidents happen frequently may have a history where many people fought
and disputed each other. Their strong negative thoughts are still lingering
around the areas and affect people there. By spreading Amacha on the ground
of the areas, we will be able to console all souls and spirits connected to the
grounds and make them rest in peace. Sometimes we go to the ocean where
ocean disasters happened, and spread Amacha on the water praying for peace
of the victims of the disasters.
Please remember that your sincerity and appreciation towards all souls
and spirits is most important in performing this Amacha Kuyo.
Question 26: What is the significance of prayer?
Answer: The prayer book describes the significance of our daily prayer. If
you read the book very carefully, you would understand the reason why you
should pray everyday.
The words of the prayer book are an expression of the universal law.

In other words, the prayer book explains the right path towards our happiness.
If you sincerely recite these words everyday and put it into practice in daily
life, you will surely be able to attain peace and happiness.
Following are the explanation of the prayer book. The essence of the
prayer book could be summarized in the following words: Reverence towards
God and ancestors, and Appreciation and Gratitude.
Question 27: What should we say when we pray to God and deities?
Answer: At the beginning of our prayer, we recite and perform Shiho-hairei
and Shi-hakushu. Cf. Question 4 and 5. This ritual is done as an expression
of our respect and sincerity towards God and deities. Following are the names
of God and deities we call and pray to.
The Supreme Spirit of the Universe (Tenjinchigi-Omikami)
This is the main object of worship in Gedatsu Church. This
represents the Universal Life Force, which permeates throughout
the universe and allows all beings to exist. Cf. Question 1
The Family and Personal Guardian Deities (Goshugo-Ogami)
These deities protect us in our daily life, and guide us on the right
path of humanity.
The Local Guardian Deity (Ujigami)
This is the guardian deity of the region where we live.
All Deities (Yaoyorozu-no-Ogami)
Many deities are working everywhere in the universe under the
Supreme Spirit of the Universe. We are protected by all kinds of
deities.
When we pray to God and deities, we say the following words with
sincere appreciation.
Morning Prayer: The Supreme Spirit of the Universe, Family
and Personal Guardian Deities, Local and all Deities; Thank you
very much for allowing me to live this day. Allow me to be of
service for the benefit of the people and the world. (Include your
plans and schedule for the day.)
Evening Prayer: The Supreme Spirit of the Universe, Family
and Personal Guardian Deities, Local and all Deities; Thank you
very much for allowing me to be of service. I offer my sincere

Question 28: What is the significance of the Supplication?
Answer: Supplication is a prayer to God and deities mentioned above. These
words are an expression of Gods Will. If you sincerely pray to God and
deities by reciting these words and live daily with this spirit, you will surely
be able to attain happiness and peace. Following are the words of
Supplication.
May peace reign over the world and all the people enjoy prosperity and
happiness.
May we unite and cooperate in the salvation of mankind.
May we pray for all spirits and their peaceful rest.
And may divine grace bless the entire universe equally for all.
Question 29: What is the significance of the Appreciation and Requital?
Answer: These words explain five essential elements for our existence, which
are country, parents, teachers, society, and heaven and all creation. Without
these elements, our life today is impossible. We all receive immeasurable
blessings from these elements. Gedatsu Kongo said, The blessings we
receive from these five elements are too huge to repay completely.
Blessings of the country
Gedatsu Kongo especially put emphasis on this. Our life today is
totally due to the country that our ancestors have persevered to
build. Each country has its own unique traditions and cultures.
Our language and customs are the fruits of a long history of our
country. The safety of our daily life is because of the protection
provided by our country. When you see the tragic situations of
refugees in the world, you would understand the significance of a
strong country.
Blessings of parents
We all have parents. We usually think that we are indebted to our
parents because they raised us. But, Gedatsu Kongo said that the
most essential indebtedness to parents is that of giving us birth.

 Blessings of teachers
From how to speak to how to handle chopsticks, we were taught
everything by many people including our parents and teachers.
They are all our teachers.
Blessings of society
No one can live by him/herself. The house we live in, the car we
drive, water we drink, electricity we use, etc.
these are all
provided by many people and society. If you deeply understand
this, you will be grateful for their blessings.
Blessings of heaven and all creation
We eat meals three times a day. They are all living things.
Thanks to their sacrifice, we can live daily. We breathe air. We
receive sunlight. These are all blessings from the entire universe.
The blessings we receive from many living things and nature is
immeasurable.
Question 30: What should we say when we pray to Gochi Nyorai?
Answer: The significance of Gochi Nyorai was explained at Question 2.
When we pray to Gochi Nyorai, we offer our sincere appreciation for its
guidance and protection. Following are the words of prayer to Gochi Nyorai.
Morning Prayer: Thank you very much for your daily
protection. I shall make every effort to practice the teaching.
Allow me to be of service.
Evening Prayer: Thank you very much for your protection
through the day. I offer my sincere appreciation for being
allowed to be of service.
Question 31: What should we say when we pray to Gedatsu Kongo?
Answer: The significance of Gedatsu Kongo was explained at Question3.
When we pray to Gedatsu Kongo, we say the following words with sincere
appreciation.
Morning Prayer: Good morning, Gedatsu Kongo. Thank you
very much for your daily guidance. With everyone, I shall
endeavor to practice requital in conformance with the teaching.
Allow me to be of service.
Evening Prayer: Thank you very much for your guidance. I

offer my sincere appreciation for being able to practice requital in

accordance with the teaching and allowed to be of service.
Please forgive me for my inadequacies.
Question 32: What is the significance of reciting the words of repentance?
Answer: Repentance means to confess your sins of the past to someone and
apologize for them. I would like to explain the meaning of each word in
repentance.
1. For all the sinful deeds which I have committed in the past,
We all have committed mistakes and hurt other people knowingly and
unknowingly since we were born. Even if you believe you have never
hurt a person, its not real. No one is perfect. The words sinful deeds
here does not only mean brutal crimes such as murder and burglary, but
it means our selfishness. The most basic sinful deeds common to all of
us is egoism. We all live more or less egotistically every day, and yet
we usually are not aware of this. Selfishness is the basic cause of
peoples sufferings and conflict in the world. This awareness is the
beginning of our true happiness and world peace.
2. Through greed, anger and ignorance,
What makes us hurt other people then? It is our minds. Our mind is
full of greed, anger and ignorance. These three desires exist deeply
within us, and urge us to act selfishly creating various human miseries.
These are called three poisons in Buddhism, which is, in a word,
egoism. We all have this selfish mind. Nobody knows how our egoism
has been created. We have to kill many living things every day to
sustain our life. Therefore, our existence itself is deeply based on
egoism. We have to recognize this. We will never be able to create
happiness and peace unless we deeply reflect on our egoism.
3. By the actions of my body, speech and mind,
Our egoism is expressed by our bodily actions, speech, and thoughts.
Our attitude in everyday life is an expression of our mind. This means,
if you deeply scrutinize your selfishness and try to correct it, you will
be able to change your attitude in life. Self-reflection and selftransformation is the only path to our happiness and world peace.

4. I now most sincerely repent.

Therefore, it is very important to deeply reflect on our egotistical
thoughts and apologize our selfishness to God. By repenting our
egoism, we will be able to change our life in a positive direction. This
is the significance of reciting repentance.
Question 33: Why do we recite the words of repentance before chanting
the Hannya-shingyo?
Answer: Our mind is just like a canvas. We have drawn many pictures on this
canvas through our experiences in life. Some of them are happy and positive
ones, but there are also many negative pictures drawn on the canvas. At the
same time, there have been many pictures drawn on the canvas by generations
of our ancestors. This is our mind. The legacy of our ancestors mentally,
spiritually, and physically is what we are today.
We have many good qualities. But, we also have many negative
aspects that should be corrected. If you want to draw a new picture on a
canvas, you have to clear the canvas and make it white first. Similarly, if you
want to change your life and become happy, you have to cleanse your past and
start afresh. You must apologize to God for your negative attitude in life, and
promise him to live positively with appreciation. This is the path of
happiness.
The outline of the teaching of Hannya-shingyo will be explained next.
This Buddhist sutra explains how everything in the universe exists, and what
human path of life is in accordance with the universal law. There are two
purposes in the recitation of this sutra. One is the chanting for God and
Gedatsu Kongo. This is to promise them to live according to the teaching of
Hannya-shingyo. The other is the chanting for souls and spirits including
ancestors. This is to console them and express appreciation for their blessings.
We repent all sinful deeds in the past by reciting the words of
repentance first, and then we promise God to start afresh and work for
peoples happiness and world peace by chanting Hannya-shingyo.
Question 34: Could you explain the teaching of the Hannya-shingyo?
Answer: We Gedatsu members recite Hannya-shingyo when we pray and

when we perform Amacha Kuyo blessing. However, we usually do not think

about the meaning of this sutra. We just chant it without understanding its
meaning. You will be able to receive immeasurable blessings from the
chanting of Hannya-shingyo without understanding its meaning because of the
sacredness of the sutra itself. But when you understand its meaning, you will
be able to chant it more sincerely. There are many books about Hannyashingyo. If you have interest, please read some of them. I would like to
explain only the outline of this sutra for now.
The word you find most in this sutra is KU, which means emptiness.
The word KU explains the essential teaching of Hannya-shingyo. If you
understand this concept, you will be able to understand the essence of this
sutra. What does KU (emptiness) mean then? It means, in a word, that
nothing can exist by itself. That means, everything can exist only in relations
with others. Everything is mutually supportive. This is how we exist in this
world. This is the meaning of the concept KU. This may be a little bit
difficult for you. But, this is very important. Please stick with it. Ill try to
explain it as simply as possible.
Please think about yourself. You have your name, and you call
yourself me. You may think this me has existed independently of others
since you were born into this world. However, if you look into your existence
more closely, you will find it is not true. First, you cannot be here without
your parents. Your parents could not be born without their parents and
ancestors. This means, you cannot exist by yourself. You are here only
relative to your parents and ancestors.
You may be wife or husband, mother or father at your home. You are a
wife, if you have a husband, or vice versa. You are a parent when you have a
child. The same is true in the relations between teacher and students,
employer and employees, businessman and customers, etc. Nobody can exist
by him/herself. Thanks to others, we are what we are. In your everyday life,
you consume many things. You eat meals three times a day. You drink water,
breathe the air, and receive sunlight. You live in a house, and drive a car.
They are all provided by others. One meal consists of countless living things.
Thanks to their sacrifice, your life is possible. You are supported by many
people and things. Your existence is possible only in relations with all beings
in the universe. Think about this. This is your existence today.
This sutra explains how everything exists: everything in this world is
connected with each other; nothing can exist by itself without others; we are
all supported by other people and many things. This is the outline of the

teaching of Hannya-shingyo.
Question 35: Why did Gedatsu Kongo urge us to recite the Hannyashingyo?
Answer: One of the reasons why Gedatsu Kongo urged us to recite the
Hannya-shingyo is that this is the most popular sutra among Japanese people.
This sutra is very short and easy to chant. It is said that this short sutra
contains every essential teaching of Buddhism. However, I believe there is
another reason, which is Hannya-shingyo explains the teaching of Gedatsu.
As I explained above, the main concept of this sutra is KU, or
emptiness. To put it in plain language, this concept explains that everything in
this universe is connected with each other. Our existence is not separate from
others. We are all supported by other people and things. Nothing can exist by
itself alone. This is the essence of the teaching of this sutra. When you look
into your existence more closely, you can understand the great blessings you
receive from people and things, and feel very grateful for them. This is the
teaching of Appreciation and Requital Gedatsu Kongo said. He explained
that we receive immeasurable blessings from our country, parents, teachers,
society, and all creation in the universe. Gedatsu Kongo mentioned these five
elements as the source of all the immeasurable blessings we receive in our
daily life.
When you understand this, you will surely understand that Gedatsu
and Hannya-shingyo in essence teach the same thing. The Hannya-shingyo
simply explains the interconnectedness of everything in this universe. But,
Gedatsu teaches how man should live when he is aware that many people and
things support him, and that he receives immeasurable blessings from others.
In this sense, if you understand the teaching of Hannya-shingyo, you will be
able to understand the teaching of Gedatsu more deeply. This is the reason
why Gedatsu Kongo urged us to recite the Hannya-shingyo.
Question 36: What is the significance of chanting Namu-Gedatsu-Kongo?
Answer: Namu means to believe, or to follow with respect. Therefore,
Namu-Gedatsu-Kongo means I respectfully believe Gedatsu Kongo and
will follow his spirit. When you chant Namu-Gedatsu-Kongo, you promise
Gedatsu Kongo to practice his teaching for peoples happiness and world
peace. The words Namu-Gedatsu-Kongo contain every essence of Gedatsu

Kongos spirit. Whenever you sincerely chant Namu-Gedatsu-Kongo, you

will be guided by Gedatsu Kongo to the right path and will be able to work for
peace.
Question 37: What is the significance of the Declaration of Creed in the
prayer book?
Answer: The first half of the prayer book is a prayer to God and Gedatsu
Kongo. The Declaration of Creed is the latter half of the book, which states
what Gedatsu members should be. When you say the Declaration of Creed,
you will be deeply aware of your duty as a Gedatsu member. Following are
explanations of each section of the Declaration of Creed.
Question 38: What is the significance of the Universal Truth in the
prayer book?
Answer: The words of the Universal Truth are as follows.
Wonders never cease when and wherever sincere prayer is offered.
Through the grace and compassion of God, regardless of any human
sufferings, when one lives with gratitude, one can attain true peace of
mind and spiritual enlightenment.
There are some important points for our Gedatsu study and practice
stated here. I would like to explain them.
First of all, it is stated here that God permeates throughout the universe
and works constantly. For example, the movement celestial bodies, four
seasonal changes, growth of plants and animals, our hearts beat, blood
circulation, digestion of food, etc. --- these phenomena are all the workings of
God. In other words, God makes all beings on earth alive and nurtures them.
There is nothing on earth, which is not the working of God.
God permeates everywhere. However, only when you sincerely pray
to God, can you communicate with God. Our sincere prayer is the key to
commune with God. When we sincerely pray to God with gratitude and try to
live to benefit the world, the will of God will be realized on earth. This is the
path for our true happiness and world peace.
There is another important point we should remember in prayer, which
is our sense of gratitude. We must understand that everything about our daily

life is the blessing of God. No matter what difficulties you may have in your
present life, you are already blessed by God. We should not forget to
appreciate Gods blessing. Our prayer should not be an egotistical demand to
God, but should be an unconditional gratitude to God.
When you pray with this spirit and live daily with gratitude, you will
be guided most appropriately and will be able to live happily. The working of
God is great and wonderful like this, which is beyond human thoughts.
Question 39: What is the significance of the Great Gedatsu Path in the
prayer book?
Answer: The essence of the Gedatsu path is explained here. If you
understand the meaning of these words deeply and put it into practice in your
daily life, you will be able to realize your full life. Following are the Great
Gedatsu Path of the Prayer Book.
In accordance with the Universal Law:
To serve with sincere appreciation and obligation.
To realize that all realities of life is the doctrine.
To promote the happiness and traditions of the people.
And to cultivate true universal friendship.
These are not complete sentences. You may feel it is a little hard to
understand these words. I would like to explain each of these lines in plain
language.
Question 40: What does Gedatsu mean?
Answer: Gedatsu is a Buddhist terminology, which means to be freed from
the bonds of negative mental attitude and attain true peace of mind. Gedatsu
Kongo called his teaching the Gedatsu teaching. This is because he thought
our goal to study is Gedatsu. Gedatsu that Gedatsu Kongo meant is basically
the same as the above-mentioned Buddhist understanding of this concept.
When you deeply self-reflect to realize your innermost spiritual and mental
traits that is inherited from generations of ancestors and correct your negative
mental attitude in life, you will be freed from your inherent negative karma
and live fully. This is what Gedatsu Kongo taught. In other words, when you
discard your egotistical attitude in life and live with appreciation and

gratitude, you will be able to attain peace of mind and live happily.
Gedatsu Kongo used the word Gedatsu in a broader sense. But, if
you understand the basic meaning of this concept, you will be able to advance
on the right path of Gedatsu.
Question 41: What is the Universal Law?
Answer: Gedatsu Kongo published the Five Laws of the Universe in 1934,
which is the summary of Gedatsu teaching. This writing explains the Gedatsu
teaching is based on the Universal Law. The Universal Law that is mentioned
in the Great Gedatsu Path of the Prayer Book covers the following five points,
which are explained in the Five Laws.

I would like to explain each of these.

1. The Universal Truth
Wonders never cease when and wherever sincere prayer is
offered. Through the grace and compassion of God, regardless of
any human sufferings, when one lives with gratitude, one can
attain true peace of mind and spiritual enlightenment.
I already explained these words in Question 38. God permeates
throughout the universe. All living things on earth including humans
are allowed to exist by God. The power of God is beyond human
intelligence. This is what Gedatsu Kongo meant here.
2. The Law of Nature
Each day consists of morning, noon and night.
Each month has the beginning, middle and end.
The four seasonal changes are spring, summer, autumn and
winter.
Such is Nature which is beyond the power of modern science.

The movement of celestial bodies, four seasonal changes, growth of

plants and animals, our heart beat, blood circulation, digestion of food,
etc. are all the working of Nature. The Law of Nature has never been
changed since time immemorial. It has been working constantly
throughout the universe. This working of Nature is beyond human
intelligence. Therefore, when man lives in accordance with the Natural
Law, he will be able to live most fully.
3. The Highest Moral
It is hoped that one progresses to the highest moral.
There are three types of morality.
a. Without endeavors, make demands. (Immoral)
b. With endeavors, make demands. (Average moral)
c. With endeavors, make no demands. (The highest moral)
To await Natures blessings is the highest moral.
This explains what mans attitude in accordance with the natural law is.
When you observe the sun, you could understand what the natural law
is. The sun always rises from the east and sets in the west. It gives its
light and heat equally to all living things on earth and nurtures them.
But, it does not demand anything in return. Nature constantly works
this way. Therefore, when we live this way, we will be able to attain
peace and happiness.
4. Self-renunciation
Egoism destroys self, home, nation and the world. Observe the
present world conditions. Egoism knows no bounds. Selfrenunciation allows all to exist. The reason is that since nothing
is demanded, everyone enjoys natural blessings. Self-reflection
in this instance is essential.
The dreadfulness of egoism is explained here. You will never find
happiness in your egotistical way of life. When you deeply self-reflect
and try to benefit other people, you will be able to live happily. This
could be true not only about individuals, but also about family, society,
country and the world. Gedatsu Kongo stated here our self-renunciation
is the foundation of our happiness and world peace.

benevolence, fidelity and gratitude. This is the treasure of a

nation since its founding.
These five virtues are based on the law of the universe. Integrity is to
revere God and appreciate its blessing. Filial piety is to respect parents
and ancestors with gratitude. Benevolence is to be thoughtful to other
people. Fidelity is to perform ones duty. Gratitude is the essential
attitude in all aspects of human life.
When you live with these five virtues, you could live happily and make
the world harmonious and prosperous.
Question 42: What does it mean to serve with sincere appreciation and
obligation?
Answer: When you closely observe your present life, you would understand
your everyday life is possible because of immeasurable blessings from many
people and things around you. We eat meals three times a day. We wear
clothing and live in houses. We drive cars on roads. We have families and
friends. We receive various social services. We drink water and breathe the
air. We receive sunlight, and so on and on. We are provided with these
blessings from the universe. This is our present life. Our life is not a manmade thing. It is a gift from God. We are allowed to live by God. Our
physical bodies were given through our parents and ancestors. The spirits of
our ancestors cannot be seen. But, they are always watching us with
compassion. When you deeply recognize this, you will feel grateful for
blessings you receive from them, and want to benefit society and the world as
a token of gratitude. This is most natural attitude of everyone because it is
human nature. This attitude will bring us peace and happiness. To serve with
sincere appreciation and obligation is peoples most natural and voluntary
attitude when they deeply recognize they are supported and nurtured by all in
the universe.
Question 43: What does it mean to realize that all realities of life is the
doctrine?
Answer: Gedatsu Kongo often said, Life is religion, religion is life. This
means religion must be practiced in our daily life. Gedatsu study is not only
to go to church, worship God, or read the doctrine. Your everyday life itself
should be the study and practice of Gedatsu. Through our daily life, we could

learn many lessons. This is Gedatsu study. Gedatsu Kongo always stressed
this point. If you read the memoirs of Gedatsu Kongo, you will know how
Gedatsu Kongo taught this to the members at that time.
Question 44: What does it mean to promote the happiness of the people?
Answer: Everyone wishes happiness. However, there are many people who
suffer from misfortunes and agonies. There must be something wrong in our
views about happiness. We must understand we wont be able to be happy
alone. We have to remember everything in the universe is connected with
each other. Nothing can exist by itself. We are all supported by other people
and many things around us. No one could be happy separated from others. If
you really understand this, you will understand how you could attain
happiness. When you try to benefit others and promote the happiness of other
people, you will be happy together with them. This is the secret of your
happiness.
Question 45: What does it mean to promote the traditions of the people?
Answer: Every country has its own customs and culture? Our life is based on
the customs and cultures of the country where we were born and raised. We
received many blessings from those traditions. We must respect our traditions.
We should try to make our country better and pass the good traditions on to
our descendants. This is our duty as members of a nation. This is the
foundation for the prosperity of a country.
Question 46: What does it mean to cultivate true universal friendship?
Answer: The goal which Gedatsu Kongo taught people is Gedatsu which is
world peace and co-prosperity of mankind. No one could attain happiness
alone. Similarly, any country would not be able to attain true peace and
prosperity alone. All countries in the world have their own traditions. They
are all different. World peace is not to lose the diversity of traditions, but to
respect and understand other traditions and unite and cooperate for the
betterment of the world.
Question 47: What is the significance of the Five Articles of Faith in the
prayer book?

Answer: The five articles of faith are the most essential points that we should
remember to learn and practice Gedatsu in our daily lives. In other words,
they are the summary of the Gedatsu teaching and the objectives of our
Gedatsu study, which are as follows.

Our faith is reverence toward God and ancestors.

Our highest ideal is Gedatsu Kongo.
Our assertion of Truth is the unity of the visible and invisible worlds.
Our attitude and objective is to confirm by personal experience.
Our aspiration is the mutual existence and prosperity of the people and
peace throughout the world.

If you always keep these in your mind and try to practice them, you will
never stray from the right path of Gedatsu. You will surely be able to attain
true peace of mind and happiness. The following are explanations of these
clauses.
Question 48: Please explain the first article: Our faith is reverence
toward God and ancestors.
Answer: There are a variety of religious faiths in the world. Some religions
put emphasis on supernatural phenomena. People may be interested in these
mysterious religions beyond human intelligence. Compared with these
religions, Gedatsu Kongos teaching is quite simple. He emphasized we
should revere God and respect ancestors, which should be the main course of
Gedatsu study.
Gedatsu Church has Tenjinchigi, or the Supreme Spirit of the universe
as the central figure to worship. The significance of Tenjinchigi was already
explained at Question 1. This represents the Universal Life Force, which
permeates throughout the universe and allows all beings to exist. Tenjinchigi
could be called the true parent of all living things on earth. Therefore,
although Gedatsu Church enshrines this God as Tenjinchigi, the essence of
this God should be universal. Name does not matter. Through all religious
traditions and paths, we should all revere this God, which is the essence of the
universe.
We all have parents and ancestors. Without them, no one could live
here today. They are the roots of our existence. When you deeply recognize

blessings you receive from your parents and ancestors, you will naturally feel
grateful for them. It is quite natural for humans to respect ancestors.
God and ancestors are the essence of our life. When you sincerely
appreciate their blessings, you will be able to understand your role in this
world and live happily in your everyday life.
Question 49: Please explain the second article: Our highest ideal is
Gedatsu Kongo.
Answer: The best way to learn Gedatsu Kongos life and his thoughts is to
read his biography. We have an English version of his biography. We
recommend you read it. After his career as a layperson, Gedatsu Kongo
established Gedatsu teaching with Gods revelation at the age of 48. His
teaching is based on his life as a layman before he began to teach. Therefore,
his teaching is easy to learn for people.
Gedatsu Kongo often said, Do not follow a person as a model, but
follow the universal law. I am a human who have some defects. Gedatsu
teaching is based on the law of the universal. You should not follow me as a
model, but follow the teaching of Gedatsu which is the universal law.
When you pray to Gedatsu Kongo, you should remember his life and
teaching, and promise him to follow Gedatsu teaching to work for the
betterment of society and world peace.
Question 50: Please explain the third article: Our assertion of Truth is
the unity of the visible and invisible worlds.
Answer: The visible world means the material and physical world. The
invisible world means the spiritual world. Most people may believe the
material and physical world is everything about life. But, this is a superficial
view on life. When you closely observe the functions of your physical body,
you will see this very clearly. Your heart, stomach and other internal organs
are constantly working in your body. Are their functions controlled by your
thoughts and will? Definitely not. They work under the control of something
beyond your thoughts, which is the invisible work of the universal life.
Modern medicine testifies that our mind and body are not separate. Our
existence is not simply a physical phenomenon, but it is always backed with
the invisible works of life and spirits.
Gedatsu Kongo explains this stating the following.

Man is allowed to exist because of God. Man is an extension of God.

As our body functions physically in accordance with the universal law, our
heart and mind should be in accord with Gods will. This is because we
cannot be separated from God even for a single second.
It is impossible that man who lives in the divine sphere is not
controlled by God. God who permeates the universe cannot be separated from
us even for a single second. It is quite natural that we are always with God,
and we are allowed to exist by God. Our life and death are totally dependent
on Gods will.
Many people may believe that, when we die, we will become naught.
However, human spirits will remain in the spiritual world after their physical
death. Many of our ancestors are not alive. But, their spirits are still in the
spiritual world, and always watch and guide us. Gedatsu Kongo stated, Our
present worries and joys are at the same time those of forefathers. Their
worries and joys will be directly transmitted to us. Forefathers and we are
always one. We may be called the crystallization of our forefathers souls. It
is very important for us to recognize we are always with our ancestors.
If you really understand that you are always protected and guided by
the invisible world, no matter what happens to you, you will never be
tormented by loneliness or lose hope. When you understand that your joy and
happiness is your ancestors joy and happiness, you will live fully and
joyously everyday to make your ancestors happy.
As mentioned above, your understanding of the unity of the visible and
invisible worlds should be the foundation of your peace and happiness.
Question 51: Please explain the fourth article: Our attitude and
objective is to confirm by personal experience.
Answer: Gedatsu Kongo always told people to practice what they learned.
When we actually practice, we will get its results. Observing the results, we
will understand if our attitude was right or wrong. We will then be able to
improve ourselves by correcting our wrong attitude in the past. This is the
meaning of this article.
Gedatsu Kongo emphasized the importance of actual practice. He
stated, Life is religion, religion is life. Gedatsu is not an idealistic study, but
is a study through actual practice.
Question 52: Please explain the fifth article: Our aspiration is the mutual

existence and prosperity of the people and peace throughout the world.
Answer: This is the ultimate goal for Gedatsu members to aim at. This
should also be the common goal for all mankind. We should always
remember that we study Gedatsu to benefit society and work for world peace.
Our motives to begin Gedatsu study may be different from each other. But, it
is important for us to ultimately become persons who sincerely pray for
peoples happiness and world peace. It is because this is Gedatsu Kongos
objective to teach us Gedatsu path.
There are many countries and cultures in the world. There are a
variety of religious traditions. They may all look different. If you see their
differences only and reject other traditions, you will have prejudice,
discrimination, conflict, antagonism, etc. You will never be able to attain
world peace. When you see the common ground of all traditions regardless of
their differences, you will be able to step forward to world peace. This is
Gedatsu Kongos spirit. Gedatsu is a nonsectarian religious study. We respect
all traditions and appreciate their common goal, which is world peace.
Everyday we pray to God and say these words. We promise God and
Gedatsu Kongo to become persons to work for world peace.
This concludes the explanation about the prayer book.
Question 53: What is the Holy Hiho?
Answer: The Holy Hiho is an amulet, which Gedatsu Kongo inscribed with
his great spiritual power for us. When we perform the Hiho meditation, we
hold this amulet between palms. This can be said a symbol of the universal
life that permeates throughout the universe and makes all living things alive.
Therefore, to hold this amulet while performing the meditation means to
totally and unconditionally trust God or the universal life, and leave
everything to God. Then your mind and body will be properly arranged
according to the natural law.
Question 54: What is the significance of the Hiho meditation?
Answer: The Hiho meditation is to sit up straight with holding the Holy Hiho
between palms, and concentrate on each of your breath. It can be called a
kind of meditation. However, it is not to imagine something in your mind.
We usually live according to our thoughts and feelings. But, we must

understand that we always see and think things in a very egotistical and selfcentered manner. We are not aware of this, and we usually believe we are
right. This is the root cause of troubles and conflicts among people. It is very
hard to correct our self-centeredness, because our mind always works
egotistically more or less. What should we do then? The Hiho meditation has
an important significance at this point. When you perform the meditation, you
leave all your thoughts and feelings to the Holy Hiho and just straight up with
natural breathing. When you perform the meditation in this manner, the
spiritual power of the Holy Hiho itself will arrange your body and mind
appropriately according to the universal law. This is the Hiho meditation.
Question 55: How should we perform the Hiho meditation?
Answer: The most important point in your Hiho meditation practice is to
leave your thoughts and feelings and unconditionally trust the Holy Hiho you
are holding between palms. In other words, the Hiho meditation is not to
think or imagine something in your mind. It is a method to arrange your mind
and body properly according to the universal law by leaving your thoughts.
When you perform the meditation, you must sit up straight. This is very
important, because your physical condition will affect your mental condition
and feeling very strongly. You may sit on the floor, or sit on a chair. When
you sit on a chair, do not lean on the back. Keep your back straight, but relax
your shoulders and arms. Hold the Holy Hiho between palms with reverence
to God and Gedatsu Kongo. Keep your palms at the level of your chest.
Close your eyes slightly and keep natural breathing. You concentrate on each
breath. This is the Hiho meditation. When you have an idea arising in your
mind, do not attach to the thought. Let it go, and return to your breath. When
some thoughts arise in your mind again, let them go. Please repeat this again
and again. You need not worry about arising thoughts. It is very natural. This
is life. You should not suppress your thoughts, but let them flow. Then the
Holy Hiho itself will arrange your mind and body most appropriately. This is
the Hiho meditation. You may think it is strange. But, if you actually practice
meditation, you will be able to understand the mystery of meditation.
Meditation is not to think of anything in your mind. It is to leave your
thoughts and totally trust God or the universal life.
Question 56: What is the Holy Goho?

Answer: The Holy Goho, which Gedatsu Kongo gave us, is a spiritual amulet
that we hold between palms when we perform Goho Shugyo. This can be said
a symbol of the universal life which makes all living things alive. With his
great spiritual power, Gedatsu Kongo inscribed this Holy Goho. When you
perform Goho Shugyo by holding this amulet between your palms at the altar,
you will be able to realize your true self through your spiritual awakening.
Your soul and mind will be purified, and your negative Karma from the past
will be resolved.
Question 57: What is the purpose of the Goho Shugyo study?
Answer: Gedatsu Kongo said that the objective of Goho Shugyo is to
cultivate our character. We must remember this all the time. We are on the
way to the completion of our character. Each step toward this goal is
important. We should endeavor to build our character step by step through our
daily life. This is what Gedatsu Kongo wanted us to practice.
Question 58: How should we perform the Goho Shugyo?
Answer: The Holy Goho is a symbol of God, or the Universal Life itself,
which Gedatsu Kongo inscribed on a piece of paper with his spiritual power.
Therefore, when we hold the Holy Goho, we should totally trust the Holy
Gohos sacred power and leave everything to God. This is the most important
attitude for us when we perform Goho Shugyo.
But, this attitude is completely opposite to our usual way of life. We
usually live by using intelligence and believe our thoughts are right.
However, the truth is that our views are more or less narrow and limited. We
always think on things from our viewpoints only, and are not aware of this.
To live a religious life is to leave your brain-centered way of life and
return to the fundamental source of life. You may feel it is hard to understand.
But, its not. It is something very simple. Please deeply see your present
existence. Your heart beats regularly. Blood circulates in your body. Food
you eat is digested while you talk with your friends. Do these function under
the control of your will? No, definitely not. While sleeping, your heart
constantly beats to make blood circulate through the body. Your life does not
work under the control of your intelligence, but it works due to the universal
life, which permeates throughout the universe. This is your existence.
However, we tend to think about things from our personal viewpoints

only, which are limited. This attitude is the basic cause of human conflicts
and sufferings. We will not be able to settle these problems completely by our
intellectual efforts. We must go beyond our brains. When we return to the
universal life and totally trust God, our minds and bodies will be settled
appropriately. This is called religious life.
Goho Shugyo is a path to practice the above-mentioned. Therefore,
the most important attitude in Goho Shugyo is to have total trust in the Holy
Goho, or God. You should leave your thoughts and feelings to the Holy Goho
when you perform Goho Shugyo. You need not think or imagine anything in
your mind. Totally trust God and just recite Namu-Gedatsu-Kongo in your
mind repeatedly. This is all about Goho Shugyo. When you have this attitude,
the Holy Goho itself will guide you most appropriately.
Question 59: What should we do when we have no spiritual movement in
our Goho Shugyo?
Answer: You may not have spiritual movements sometimes when you
perform Goho Shugyo. But, its okay. To hold the Holy Goho means that you
are already in the hands of God regardless of any spiritual movements. God
watches and protects you. Therefore, there is nothing to worry about.
Continue to recite Namu-Gedatsu-Kongo repeatedly in your mind with your
total trust and sincere appreciation to God and Gedatsu Kongo. You will then
never fail to receive the divine guidance. When you perform Goho Shugyo,
you do not need to think of anything or do any efforts. To hold the Holy Goho
means to release your thoughts and totally trust God or the universal life that
makes you alive fundamentally. Then the mysterious power of the Holy Goho
will make your mind and body adjust to the rhythm of the universal life. This
is Goho Shugyo.

Question 60: With what attitude should we receive the messages from the
spirits while performing the Goho Shugyo?
Answer: When you perform Goho Shugyo, you will receive various messages
from spirits including ancestors. At that time, you must remember that the
spiritual messages are always lessons about yourself, not about the spirits
only. For example, if you receive a message from your ancestor that he/she is

suffering in the spiritual world because of his/her wrongdoings during his/her

lifetime, you should not regard the message as a matter of the spirit only. You
must learn something from the message as a lesson for yourself. Gedatsu
Kongo stated, Our present worries and joys are at the same time those of our
forefathers. Their worries and joys will be directly transmitted to us.
Forefathers and we are always one. All the messages from spirits including
ancestors reflect your present attitude in life. Spirits who come out in your
Goho Shugyo are not separated from you. This is very important to
remember. When you accept every message from spirits as a lesson for
yourself, you will find your defects and improve yourself by correcting your
wrong attitude. This is the purpose of Goho Shugyo.
Question 61: What should we learn from the negative Karma of our
ancestors and ourselves, which we find in the Goho Shugyo?
Answer: You may often learn lessons about your negative Karma when you
perform Goho Shugyo. You may feel gloom hanging over you and your
family. However, your present life is possible because of that Karma. You
must understand this. No matter what you may have in the past, when you
scrutinize yourself and try to correct your wrong attitude, you will be able to
improve your life and attain peace and happiness. Therefore, the negative
Karma is not a bad thing for you, but it is a blessing to change your life.
When you perform Goho Shugyo, you should accept all messages from spirits
as lessons for yourself. You will then settle all problems in life through your
sincere self-reflection, and will be able to start afresh. This will be at the same
time the peace and happiness of your ancestors. No matter what happens to
you, you should not be desperate. Regardless of any difficulties and hardships
in life, they are all blessings God gave you to make you happy. Through
overcoming the difficulties, you will be guided to true happiness. Gedatsu
Kongo stated, Karma is a seed of hope. You will be able to find a seed of
true happiness in your present difficult situation when you endeavor to
overcome it with sincerity. Goho Shugyo is a path to make a flower of
happiness bloom from the seed you already have in the present situation
regardless of any hardships.
Question 62: Why should we enshrine God in our home?
Answer: The Prayer Book says, God resides wherever sincere prayer is

offered. Gedatsu Kongo stated in his book, If you seek, you may find God
everywhere. It is impossible to believe that the entire universe which is
governed by God should not be filled with God. Therefore, we can say that
God is not limited to reside at certain places such as churches, temples,
shrines, sacred symbols, etc., but he is everywhere. If you sincerely pray to
God, you will be able to feel God. This is true. The question is your sincerity.
Do you think you are always sincere enough when you pray? When you
deeply scrutinize yourself, you will be able to understand the reason why you
should enshrine God in the home.
It is very hard for us to always keep our mind and spirit in accordance
with Gods will. We usually have selfish thoughts in our minds. Such are
humans. Thats why we should enshrine God. Enshrinement of God is an
expression of our reverence to God. When we enshrine God in the home and
pay respect to God in our daily life, sincerity and reverence to God will be
cultivated deeply within us, and gradually our daily living will be adjusted in
accordance with Gods will.
Question 63: What should we say when we pray to God?
Answer: It is very common to pray for family safety, successful business, and
recovery from illness at churches and temples. Human beings are weak.
When we fall into adversity, we may feel powerless and pray to God for help
regardless of faith. This is quite natural for humans. But, it is important to
understand the significance of prayer.
When everything goes well, many people ignore God. But, when they
encounter some difficulty, they rush to church and make an unreasonable
demand of God. This kind of prayer is an expression of your egoism, which is
far from Gods will. When we pray this way, we use God to fulfill our selfish
desires. Such people lack respect and courtesy to God. People who lack
respect and etiquette will be ignored by other people. The same is true in our
relation with God. We should not forget sincerity and respect to God.
Things may not always go just as you want even if you pray sincerely.
But, it is important to accept everything as Gods blessing with appreciation
regardless of the results. This is the right attitude in prayer. The essence of
prayer is gratitude. We should appreciate Gods blessing and protection first.
Then we should sincerely pray to God for guidance and say, Please guide me
appropriately for the betterment of society and world peace. If you sincerely
pray this way in your daily life, you will be guided appropriately and will be

able to attain true peace and happiness.

Question 64: Does religion deny human desires?
Answer: Human beings have various desires. Desires are essential for human
existence. If you deny desires, your existence is difficult. However, desires
are, at the same time, a cause of human sufferings and conflicts. Therefore, it
is important for us to cope with desires appropriately. Religions have
struggled to solve this problem from ancient times.
Some religions emphasize negative aspects of human desires. But,
Gedatsu does not deny desires. Gedatsu urges us to deal with desires
appropriately and effectively. Gedatsu is the path to live in accordance with
the universal law. We should not be twisted around by desires, but we should
control desires appropriately to live in accordance with the universal law.
Gedatsu Kongo used to say, Do not be twisted by petty desires, but
have grand desires to benefit the world and live fully. When you leave
egoism and spend your energy, time, and money for peoples happiness, you
will be able to live fully and attain peace and happiness.
Human desires know no bounds. The more selfish desires you have,
the more you will suffer. When you leave selfishness and live for the
betterment of society and peoples happiness, all desires will work efficiently
in a well-balanced manner within you. You will then be able to live fully and
attain true happiness.
Question 65: What is the Manbu Kuyo?
Answer: In the summer of 1934, Mrs. Sui Otsuka, the leader of Nakano
Branch, performed Goho Shugyo. A soul of a Nichiren Buddhist monk
appeared and said, Please perform the Manbu Kuyo, which literally means
ten thousand Kuyo, for me. I have received the Senbu Kuyo, which literally
means a thousand Kuyo, of Nichiren Buddhism. After I came into the
spiritual world, I understand the significance of this sacred Manbu Kuyo for
the first time. I really want to receive the Manbu Kuyo. Mrs. Otsuka did not
know what the Manbu Kuyo was. She went to Gedatsu Kongo and asked him
about that.
Gedatsu Kongo said, The soul of a priest finally asked you for Manbu
Kuyo. I have been expecting the word to initiate it. We should begin the
Manbu Kuyo now. Some members asked him if they could apply for Manbu

Kuyo. He said, The Manbu Kuyo is for all souls and spirits. Everyone could
apply for it. Thus the first Manbu Kuyo was performed at the Fall Festival in
1934. It has been practiced twice a year since then.
The record of the first Manbu Kuyo shows that 2359 souls and spirits
were applied for at that time. The very first Kuyo was for the self-cultivation
of Gedatsu Kongo himself. No.2 to No.21 were for the self-cultivation of
Gedatsu Kongos family and relatives. No.22 to No.30 were for the Kuyo of
Gedatsu Kongos relatives ancestral souls. He urged members to request
Manbu Kuyo for themselves and for their relatives.
Question 66: What beliefs should we have when we apply for the Manbu
Kuyo?
Answer: Manbu Kuyo makes all souls and spirits rest in peace and work
efficiently in the spiritual world due to the sacred power of Gedatsu Kongo
and the Holy Goho. We should apply for the Manbu Kuyo with sincere
appreciation for the spirits daily protection.
Gedatsu Kongo explained what we should think about when we apply
for the Manbu Kuyo and said, Please remember your volition when
requesting the Manbu Kuyo, and convey your thoughts about this Kuyo to
your family and relatives. Keep the certificate of the Manbu Kuyo in the
home altar forever as your family treasure. As he said, the most important
thought for us is our volition when requesting the Manbu Kuyo. Therefore,
before you apply for the Manbu Kuyo, you should seriously consider or
consult ministers about what Kuyo you should apply for. When you decide
what to apply for, pray to God and Gedatsu Kongo at the altar and report it.
Question 67: What kind of Manbu Kuyo is most appropriate to apply
for?
Answer: Every Manbu Kuyo is important. But, first of all we should apply
for the Kuyo of our ancestors. When your parents and grandparents die, you
should sincerely perform Amacha Kuyo for them for one year, and then apply
for the Manbu Kuyo in their behalf. Manbu Kuyo purifies all spirits and
makes them rest in peace. The spirits who receive Manbu Kuyo will be able
to work more efficiently for us from the spiritual world. The Manbu Kuyo for
your deceased parents and ancestors will be the best Kuyo for them. They will
be very happy and will guide and protect you with more effort.

Self-cultivation is important for everyone. This is a Kuyo for

yourself and people who live now. When you apply for this Kuyo, you
promise God to live fully and work for the betterment of society and world
peace. You will then be able to live fully and happily. According to the record
on Manbu Kuyo, the very first Manbu Kuyo was for the self-cultivation of
Gedatsu Kongo. This tells us the significance of this Kuyo.
Peaceful old age is a Kuyo for your close family and friends who live
now. When you apply for this Kuyo, you thank them for their blessings and
wish for their health and longevity. Through this Kuyo, love and compassion
will be cultivated deeply within you.
Besides these, there are many kinds of Manbu Kuyo. Please apply for
the Kuyo that is appropriate for you. After the festivals, the certificate of the
Manbu Kuyo will be sent to you. This certificate should be kept at your altar
forever as your family treasure.
Question 68: Where does God exist?
Answer: Each person may have a different image of God in his/her mind.
Japanese peoples image of God should be quite different from that of
Muslims. It is natural that peoples religious beliefs and their images of God
are different from each other according to their cultural and historical
background. Our thoughts about God should be different from each other
according to our family environment and religious beliefs. Therefore, I cannot
give you an answer that will completely satisfy everyone. I will answer this
question according to Gedatsu Kongos teaching.
Gedatsu Kongo stated, The Supreme Spirit of the universe reside
when and wherever sincere prayer is offered. He also explained about God
saying, All beings have the same root, which is God. Mountains, rivers,
trees, plants, man, and animals they all have their own master-gods,
which are controlled by the Supreme God of the universe. If you seek, you
may find God everywhere in society and streets. It is impossible that the
entire universe which is governed by God should not be filled with God.
These words explain what Gedatsu Kongo thought about God. God is
everywhere. Everything in the universe is a manifestation of God. They are
all Gods work. We cannot be separated from God even for a single moment.
We are a manifestation of God. Thus God is always working everywhere in
the universe.

Question 69: How can we believe in the existence of God?

Answer: Gedatsu Kongo stated, Where should we seek the unseen God?
One never to imagines the image of God is like seeing ghosts. The primary
course to grasp the essence of God is to see its reality through world
phenomena. As mentioned above, God is working everywhere all the time.
Everything in the universe is a manifestation of God. Therefore, you could
touch the essence of God and see its reality through phenomena in this world.
Concerning methods to recognize God, Gedatsu Kongo stated the following.
The gods of Tenjinchigi may be too vague to grasp. But, the universe
is the manifestation of God, and God resides in every element in the universe.
Therefore, it is important for us to revere and respect everything as God. This
is the beginning of religious faith.
The law that controls the entire universe, the principle of universal
development and its driving force and mercy, these are all the
manifestation of the divine will of Tenjinchigi.
You may truly discover the solemn and beautiful divinity and the
perfect and great will of God in nature; the movement of celestial bodies,
rivers and mountains, wind and water, and plants and trees.
When you closely observe nature around you, you will see everything
in this world is a miracle. Four seasonal changes, the constant movement of
celestial bodies, activities of various living things; you will be deeply
moved by seeing their miraculous works. When you observe yourself more
deeply, you will see miracles in your existence. Take a close look at your
heart beat, blood circulation, works of your internal organs, breath, digestion
of food, movement of your limbs, your eyesight, thoughts in your mind, etc.
These are all working because of something beyond your will and thoughts.
They are works of Life which permeates throughout the universe. We call this
God. Thus God allows all of us to exist.
Question 70: Why is religion necessary for man?
Answer: You may think that those who believe in religion are weak persons,
and that independent persons do not need religion. When everything goes
smoothly, we tend to think we could live without any help by others. But,
when we encounter difficulties we cannot handle, we may feel powerless and
pray for help by someone beyond us. The truth is, we usually forget that we

receive immeasurable blessings and protection from the universe. Therefore,

we do not know the significance of religion when things go well.
Everyone is allowed to live due to immeasurable blessings from the
universe. We eat three meals a day. They are all living things. Thanks to
their sacrifice, we could sustain our life. We drink water, breathe the air, and
receive sunlight. Our physical functions and the working of our internal
organs are all controlled by the universal life which is beyond our will. This is
our existence. When everything goes smoothly in life, we tend to be too
comfortable about ourselves and forget this.
When we deeply realize that we are allowed to exist by receiving
immeasurable blessings from everything in the universe, we will be filled with
gratitude and truly recognize the significance of our existence. This
realization will make us live fully. Religion is a path to realize the
significance of our existence through understanding the connection between
man and the universe. Therefore, religion is the most essential path for man to
live fully.
Question 71: Will man become unfortunate without religion?
Answer: I wont say that of course. However, I can say that you could live
fully with joy and hope if you have religious faith.
When you observe religions and their activities in the world, you may
be skeptical about them. In fact, some religious organizations have harmful
influences on society. Some went to extremes and killed people. Everyone
knows many religions coerce people into donating money or joining them.
Some religions deceive the aged or the sick saying that they would become
healthier and happier by donating a lot of money. But, it is a pity that you
may have doubts about religion or deny it because of these. You may think
that only weak people need religion, or that religion is poisonous because it
makes people more dependent. But, this is your misunderstanding of religion.
I dont mean that you should belong to a specific religious
organization. I mean you should be spiritually alerted to the religious sphere.
What is religious sphere? It is the boundless whole world you will heed when
you truly realize the connection between the invisible world and yourself. The
invisible world means souls, spirits, life, God, the universe, etc. When you
profoundly notice that you are connected with everything in the universe, and
that you are nurtured and supported by everyone and everything in this world,
you will be able to understand the meaning of your existence and your role in

the world. You will then be able to appreciate what you are, and live fully
with hope and joy.
If you have a chance to study a specific religion, its better for you to
study it. Each religion has its legends. When you study and practice a
specific tradition, you will be able to understand yourself more deeply and be
spiritually alerted to the boundless world of life.
Question 72: When you join Gedatsu, will you become happy?
Answer: Everyone will be happy when she/he studies Gedatsu. But, if you
think everything would go just as you hope when you join Gedatsu, it may not
be so. However, you will definitely be able to live fully if you join Gedatsu
and practice its path sincerely.
What is happiness? When you are healthy, have much money, and
everything goes as you want, you may feel happy. Health and wealth are
desirable for everyone. However, many people who are blessed with health
and wealth suffer. This means wealth or health does not always bring us
happiness.
You may sometimes encounter difficulties in life. In this case, you
grieve over your misfortune. But, if things go just as you hope, what will
happen to you? Think about this. You will probably be ruined eventually if
everything goes just as you want, because human thoughts are always selfcentered. You have to understand this seriously.
It really is painful for us to have hardships such as illness and financial
problems. We all want to avoid these difficulties in life. It is quite natural for
humans. But, you should understand everything has meaning. Even
difficulties have meaning. No matter what you experience, you can learn from
it. Everything always happens to you in a most appropriate way. When you
accept everything and try your best in the situation, you will definitely be
guided appropriately. This is the path of Gedatsu.
Remember everything is a blessing. No matter what happens to you,
you accept it as it is and sincerely try your best in your daily life. This is the
path of true happiness for everyone.
Question 73: Will Gedatsu study cure every illness?
Answer: In his writing Five Laws, Gedatsu Kongo stated, When and
wherever a sincere prayer is offered, through the grace and compassion of

God, regardless of any human sufferings and diseases, these will be resolved
completely. This is really a wonder. How would you interpret these words?
What do you think Gedatsu Kongo meant by this statement? You may believe
that any disease will be cured if you sincerely study Gedatsu. This is what
everyone wishes. But, we must remember this is an egocentric understanding,
and is not the correct meaning of Gedatsu Kongos thought. However, if you
think it is superstitious to believe that illness is cured by your faith in God, this
is also a biased understanding of religion.
In fact, we have many cases where a person who was critically ill
recovered miraculously by his/her faith in God. It is important to accept these
facts as they are. However, if you think any illness will be cured by your faith
in God, it is a self-centered thought and is not the Gedatsu way. Everyone
wishes good health. But, we must remember this is human thoughts, and is
not always Gods will.
Gedatsu Kongo changed this statement later into the following: When
and wherever a sincere prayer is offered, through the grace and compassion of
God, regardless of any sufferings, when one lives with gratitude, one can
attain true peace of mind and spiritual enlightenment. This is truly a wonder.
These words express Gedatsu Kongos thoughts very clearly. When
we encounter difficulties in life such as illness, financial problems, and family
problems, we suffer and pray for the relief from them. This is quite natural for
humans. But, we must understand these are self-centered thoughts. Please
think about your life. Even when you have difficulties in life, you are alive
now. This life is not functioning by your will. You are allowed to exist by
God, or the universe. Breathing, circulation of blood, and functioning of
internal organs are not controlled by your will. They are all made to function
by someone beyond your intellect. You may call it God, the universal life, etc.
Name doesnt matter. But actually, you live this life now. When you
understand this, you will be able to appreciate your life, no matter what it is.
Everyone wishes things would go as he/she wants. But, things do not
always go smoothly. Sometimes you may have hardships. This is human life.
When you encounter difficulties or something undesirable for you, how should
you accept and cope with them. This could be a crucial turning point in your
life. Your grief over misfortune or difficulties will not solve the problem and
wont lead you to true happiness. You should not be influenced by your
feelings. No matter what happens to you, you accept it as it is and sincerely
try your best in it. This attitude will definitely lead you to a path which is
most appropriate for you. This is the meaning of Gedatsu Kongos words,

Regardless of any sufferings, when one lives with gratitude, one can attain
true peace of mind and spiritual enlightenment.
When you accept your present situation, no matter what it is, and
sincerely try your best in your duty, God will guide you most appropriately.
This is the Gedatsu way of life. If you have this attitude, no matter what
happen to you, you will be able to overcome any difficulties and live fully
with hope.
Question 74: What will happen after we die?
Answer: This is the oldest and newest question for men. Everyone of us asks
this question seriously during our lifetime. But, why do we ask this question?
I believe this is because we will be relieved when we have the answer to this
question.
We are all growing old. We have been getting old since we were born.
And everybody will physically die someday. Nobody knows how long he/she
will live. When we were young, we felt we could live for a long time. But,
the truth is we could only live for a hundred years at most. Compared with
eternity, this is just like an instant.
During this short period of time, we experience various things. You
were born into this world. You went to school, loved someone, and suffered a
broken heart when you were young. You got a job, got married, had children,
etc. Sometimes you may have attained great success in business, or have been
highly praised. You may have lost your loved ones, suffered from illness, or
failed in business. No matter what kind of life you may have, you must die
someday. This is life.
When you look deeply into this fact of life, what do you feel? No
matter what power and fortune you may have commanded during your
lifetime, you will lose everything when you die. If you believe that the visible
world is everything about life, can you find meaning in life? If you think you
will lose everything at your physical death, how can you find hope in life?
Gedatsu Kongo stated, It is reassuring to be able to know eternal life
while living in this ever-changing phenomenal world. It is natural to be
attached to physical bodies. But, it is a big difference whether one knows or
not the holy spiritual world where individual souls exists after death. Yet the
life of souls is beyond time and space, and is eternal. This is the essence of
life. You can return to your true home after death. If you understand it, you
will be happy when you think about your eternal life after death. For those

who think death is the end of life, death must be the greatest anguish. They
may suffer when dying. But, happy are the people who understand they will
bloom after their physical death. If you want to know the true path of life, you
must clearly see life after death.
He said we will continue to live forever as spirits after our physical
death. Only when we can firmly believe this eternal life, will we be able to
live fully with hope and joy.
Question 75: When we pray, will God help us?
Answer: Gedatsu Kongo stated, Wonders never cease when and wherever
sincere prayer is offered. Through the grace and compassion of God,
regardless of any human sufferings, when one lives with gratitude, one can
attain true peace of mind and spiritual enlightenment. Therefore, it could be
said that God will help you when you sincerely pray to Him. However, it does
not mean that God will fulfill whatever you want when you pray. This
statement of Gedatsu Kongo explains this point.
First, it is important to recognize that God permeates throughout the
universe and works constantly. The movement of celestial bodies, four
seasonal changes, growth of plants and animals, our hearts beat, digestion of
food, etc. are all the workings of God. Thus, God always makes all living
things alive. There is nothing other than the workings of God. We are already
blessed by God as long as we exist. When we appreciate the blessings of God
and live according to His will, we will be guided most properly towards a life
of joy and happiness.
There is something important we should remember when we pray. It is
appreciation. Our present existence in itself is the blessing of God. Therefore,
we should first be grateful for being alive. With appreciation, we should
sincerely pray to God. Then we will be protected and guided by God most
appropriately, and will be able to attain true peace of mind and happiness. The
workings of God are great and miraculous like this. It is beyond human
thoughts.
Question 76: Why is it important to self-reflect?
Answer: It is because we humans are always self-centered, and yet we are
usually not aware of this. When we realize our selfishness, we will be able to
step forward to true happiness. As long as we exist, we cannot be completely

free from egoism. This is because our existence is dependent on the sacrifice
of other living things. But, it is mans uniqueness to be aware of this fact of
existence.
We always see things from our viewpoints. Other people have
different viewpoints. This is how we usually see and think things. But, we
usually do not recognize this, and firmly believe what we see is the only truth.
With such a view, we criticize others. This attitude causes conflicts and
disharmony among people. When you deeply self-reflect and recognize your
egocentric attitude, you will be able to accept other peoples different views
and values. This will lead to mutual understanding and respect among people.
This is the reason Gedatsu Kongo emphasized the importance of selfreflection.
Question 77: What is the meaning of self-renunciation?
Answer: Self-renunciation means to leave our ego. However, you may feel it
is very hard to renounce ego. As long as we are alive, we humans will never
be able to completely leave our ego. This is because our existence is
absolutely dependent on the sacrifice of many living things. But, we can be
aware of this fact of existence. This is the uniqueness of human beings. And,
this awareness is the key leading to peace and happiness. No one can exist by
him/herself. Our existence is dependent on others. We are supported and
nurtured by many people and all things in the universe. Yet, we sometimes
forget to appreciate the blessings from people and things. When we forget
appreciation to others and are proud about our power and talent, we will be
selfish.
Gedatsu Kongo stated, Egoism destroys self, home, country, and the
world. Self-renunciation allows all to exist. When you deeply appreciate
these words, you will be able to clearly see the path to peace and happiness of
the world. If you deeply understand that you are supported by all people and
things around you, you will naturally feel grateful for immeasurable blessings
from them. Then you wont be able to live selfishly as before, and will want
to benefit others. This is what Gedatsu Kongo meant by the word, selfrenunciation.
Question 78: What is the meaning of self-understanding?
Answer: Self-understanding means to know yourself. But, what does self49

knowledge mean? When I was young, I tried to search for the meaning of true
self. I read many books on religion and philosophy, and visited various
teachers and gurus. I performed meditation. But, I could not find the meaning
of true self. At that time, I imagined there must be a true self which is just like
a jewel within me.
When I read Hannya-shingyo, I discovered my wrong view on myself.
Hannya-shingyo states that everything is empty of a separate self. This means
everything is connected to one another. Nothing can exist by itself separate
from others. Our existence is possible due to others. We receive
immeasurable blessings from many people and things around us. This is our
life. When you recognize this deeply, you will naturally feel very grateful for
everything and everybody who support your existence. This sense of
appreciation will lead to peace and happiness. In this sense, Gedatsu Kongo
urged us to know ourselves.
Question 79: Why is the repentance necessary for us?
Answer: Everyone knows the significance of apology in daily living. When
you did something wrong and got into trouble with someone, in order to repair
the relationship with the person, you should apologize to him for your
mistakes. Otherwise, you wont be able to get out of the trouble in your
relationship. It is important for you to apologize for the past in order to start
afresh in your life.
This can be true in our Gedatsu study too. No one is perfect.
Everyone has made mistakes in the past knowingly or unknowingly. You may
have hurt others unknowingly. We have to remember we are always selfcentered. We are the inheritance of our ancestors. You have many good
qualities from your ancestors and some negative aspects from them as well.
These qualities urge you to act in life. This is why you may sometimes
commit a wrongful deed and hurt others unknowingly. Therefore, you must
deeply self-reflect. When you find negative aspects in yourself, you should
apologize to God for your wrong doings in the past and try to correct them.
Then you will be able to start afresh in your life. This is the reason why
repentance is important in your life.
However, it is very hard for us to scrutinize the traits from our
ancestors within us. This is why Gedatsu Kongo left us the owabi-jo, or the
paper for repentance. While holding Owabi-jo between your palms, you
sincerely apologize to God for the past mistakes of yourself and your

ancestors. Then your negative traits from your generations of ancestors will
be dissolved by the sacred power of Owabi-jo. You will then be able to start a
new life in accordance with the universal law.
Question 80: Why do we have to apologize to God for our prayer for the
attainment of our selfish desires?
Answer: When we go to churches and temples, we pray to God for the safety
and good health of our families, success of our business, etc. This is quite
natural for humans. It is not wrong at all. However, if you always pray for
the attainment of your selfish desires, you will lose the sense of gratitude, and
will be in the wrong path of faith. We are allowed to exist by God, and we are
already blessed by many people and all things on earth. We should be
thankful for that, and as a token of appreciation we should try to benefit the
world through our duties. This is the right path of our Gedatsu study, which is
the path of true happiness.
When we join Gedatsu and start our study, we first apologize to God
for praying for our selfish desires in the past as well as our ancestors selfish
prayers during their lifetimes. This is because we self-reflect and change our
selfish attitude in life, and make a fresh start.
Question 81: Is it wrong for us to pray to God for the attainment of our
desires?
Answer: As mentioned above, it is not wrong to pray to God for the
attainment of our desires. This is one of essential elements in religious faith.
The question is how we pray and what we pray for. Even when you pray to
God very earnestly, if you pray only for the attainment for your selfish desires,
it is not a right prayer. This will not lead one to true happiness.
What is most important for our faith is the sense of gratitude. This is
because we are all allowed to live by God, and because we receive
immeasurable blessings from many people and things on earth. Our present
existence is totally due to Gods blessing. Therefore, when we pray to God,
first of all we should pay our respects and sincerely appreciate Gods
blessings. After that we could pray for the attainment of your wishes.
When you pray to God, you must remember that you should not stick
to your wishes, but that you should entrust everything to God and say, Please
guide me most appropriately. If your prayer is not granted, you should

accept this result with appreciation. When you have this sense of humility and
gratitude, you will surely be guided to in the most appropriate way.
Question 82: What is the meaning of Gedatsu Kongos teaching:
Unconditional Appreciation?
Answer: This is one of the most important teachings of Gedatsu Kongo. This
is because this teaching shows us the essential point of Gedatsu, which is our
unconditional trust and appreciation to God.
When something favorable happens to us, we all appreciate it. But,
when something undesirable happens, it is very hard for us to appreciate it.
However, Gedatsu Kongo urged us to appreciate what we are even when we
have difficulties and hardships. This is completely different from ordinary
human thoughts, but this is the essence of religious faith.
We usually think about things based on our convenience. When things
go favorably, we are happy. When things do not go smoothly or something
difficult happens, we may grieve over the situation or curse the world. These
are all our egotistical thoughts.
Please look into your existence closely. Your heart keeps beating all
the time. Who makes your heart beat? It is not you who make your heart
function. Your heart keeps functioning while you are sleeping at night. Your
heart functions due to something beyond your will, which is the universal life
force. The same is true about the functions of your internal organs, circulation
of blood, breathing, and digestion of food. You are alive now. This fact of
your life is totally due to the Life force permeating throughout the universe.
You may call this God. Its name doesnt matter. But actually you are allowed
to live by this universal life force.
If you really recognize this, you will understand that everything in
your life is given by something beyond your thoughts. There is nothing
meaningless in this world. Everything has meaning. Something which may
look difficult from your human viewpoint is not always meaningless.
Everything is given by God when it is most appropriate for us. Therefore, you
should accept everything as it is, and do your best in the situation. Then you
will be guided most appropriately. This is the life of the unconditional
appreciation, which is the life of hope and peace.
Question 83: What did Gedatsu Kongo mean by the practice of humility?

Answer: Gedatsu Kongo usually explained the essence of Gedatsu in plain

language. His teaching of the practice of humility, poverty, and death was
one of those examples. By using these simple expressions, he clearly explains
what Gedatsu study is.
The first practice is the practice of humility. The original Japanese
expression of this practice is Baka-no-keiko, which literally means the
practice of fool. It is hard to describe the nuance of this expression in English.
There is a Japanese expression, Baka-ni-naru, which literally means to
become a fool. This does not mean to become foolish, but it means to be
humble.
Everyone has pride. It is not necessarily wrong to have pride, because
we make efforts to make progress with pride. However, when you have too
much pride, youll be flattering yourself, and become arrogant and slight
others. This attitude will make you self-centered. It wont lead you to
happiness.
We are more or less egotistical, and we are not fully aware of this. We
usually believe that we are right and that others are wrong. Everyone has this
tendency. So, it is only natural that we always have troubles with other
people.
Observing such human minds, Gedatsu Kongo urged us to self-reflect
and be aware of our selfishness because it is the only path to live happily. The
practice of humility is to scrutinize our self-centeredness and be aware that we
receive immeasurable blessings from other people and everything in the
universe. When you appreciate the blessings you receive from others, you
will be able to lead a happy life.
Question 84: What did Gedatsu Kongo mean by the practice of poverty?
Answer: The practice of poverty is to appreciate everything you consume in
your daily life. Gedatsu Kongo used to say, When you could live in a house
with no leak in the roof, wear clothes appropriate for each season, and have
three meals everyday, you must be grateful.
Observing our daily living, we can tell that everything we consume is
the blessing we receive from everything and all people in the world. If you
really understand this, you will be grateful for being alive because of these
blessings. The practice of poverty is to appreciate everything we receive from
the world. This sense of gratitude will lead us to true happiness.

Question 85: What did Gedatsu Kongo mean by the practice of death?
Answer: The practice of death is to live with appreciation. Gedatsu Kongo
used to say, We were born with nothing, and will die with nothing. Our life
is only a temporary time between birth and death. No matter what wealth
you accumulate during your lifetime, you have to leave everything when you
die. The same is true with your physical bodies. When you closely observe
this fact of your life, you will be able to realize how you should live.
We usually do not think of our death. Everyone may feel as though
they will live forever. This is why we complain about life and hurt people
sometimes.
Gedatsu Kongo stated, When you wake up in the morning, you are
born for the day. When you fall asleep in the evening, you die for the day.
These words well explain how precious our life is today. We are all alive now.
Who knows how long you could live? Please ponder this very closely.
When you wake up in the morning, first you should pray to God and
say, Thank you very much for giving me this precious life. I will do my best
in my duties. Please guide me most appropriately. During the day, you
should endeavor to perform your duties. And, before you go to bed in the
evening, no matter what happened to you during the day, you should pray to
God and unconditionally appreciate everything. This attitude will bring the
most appropriate way of life for you.
When one is clearly aware of the limitedness of ones life, one can
truly understand the significance of life. When you deeply realize that
everything including your physical body is a gift from God, you will be able
to live fully. The practice of death is to appreciate the preciousness of life and
live each day to the fullest.
Question 86: What is the significance of the Sun-Spirit Monument?
Answer: The Sun-Spirit Monument was erected in Kitamoto, Japan on
February 11, 1940, which was the National Foundation Day of Japan. The
year when this monument was built was the 2600 th anniversary of the
enthronement of the first emperor of Japan. Japanese people celebrated this
event all over the country at that time. Gedatsu Kongo erected this monument
at that auspicious celebration to urge Japanese people as well as Gedatsu
members to deeply recognize the significance of the national foundation.

Gedatsu Kongo regarded this monument as a symbol of truth. He

stated, Truth will definitely win. Truth means ones sincerity. In the center
of this monument, the image of the sun was carved. The sun has been
respected as a symbol of ones sincerity and harmony by Japanese people from
ancient times.
The sun gives its energy to all living things on earth without
demanding anything in return. This represents the heart of God. Gedatsu
Kongo urged us to learn this spirit from the sun, and built this monument.
Question 87: What is the significance of the All Souls Monument?
Answer: The All Souls Monument was built in Goreichi in 1936. Souls and
spirits of all living things since ancient times are enshrined in this monument.
We pay respect to all spirits and appreciate their immeasurable blessings at
this monument.
Gedatsu Kongo erected this monument as a symbol of ones goodwill.
He stated, Ones goodwill will definitely prosper. This is because there is
no other greater goodwill than ones sincere gratitude to all living things and
spirits. He called this monument the symbolic tower of world peace. Ones
sense of appreciation and gratitude to all people and things is the foundation
of world peace and peoples happiness.
Question 88: What is the significance of the Monument Encomium?
Answer: On Gedatsu Kongo's 60th birthday, November 28, 1941, all
members dedicated this monument as a token of gratitude to him. This
monument is regarded as a symbol of beauty. Gedatsu Kongo stated, Beauty
of ones heart will definitely shine. This is because there is no other beautiful
heart than ones respect and gratitude to ones teacher. We pay respect to
Gedatsu Kongo and all teachers and appreciate their guidance and support.
This monument also represents everyones mutual help and
cooperation to overcome difficulties and accomplish a great cause.
Gedatsu Kongo regarded these three monuments as the symbols of
Gedatsu teaching. That means these three monuments represent the essence of
Gedatsu. When you visit these monuments and pay sincere respect, you will
surely be guided to the path of happiness.

ancestors and the pioneers for their toils and efforts for founding the country.
We also learn about the spirit of the sun, which is selflessness and compassion,
and promise God to endeavor to contribute to the country and the world.
Pilgrimage to the Three Sacred Sites in Japan: In April of every year, a
group of Gedatsu members visit the following three sites. Ise Shrine is the
main Shinto shrine of all Japanese people from ancient times. Kashihara
Shrine is a major shrine, in which Emperor Jinmu or the first emperor of Japan
is enshrined. Sennyuji Temple is the only Imperial family temple, in which
many emperors, empresses and other Imperial family members are enshrined.
Members visit these sites every year to thank their ancestors for their blessings
and pray for the security of the country and world peace.
Spring Festival: The Spring Festival is held in May of every year. Members
gather together in Goreichi and celebrate the festival to thank God for his
blessings and pray for an abundant harvest.
Fall Festival: The Fall Festival is held in October of each year. Members
gather together in Goreichi and celebrate the festival to thank God for his
blessings and the harvest of the year.
Gedatsu Kongos Annual Memorial Service: On November 4th, the
anniversary of Gedatsu Kongos passing, members gather at the Sennyuji
Temple in Kyoto to observe his annual memorial service.
Gedatsu Kongos Birthday Service: On November 28th, members gather at
Goreichi to celebrate Gedatsu Kongos birthday.
Question 90: What is the significance of the Spring and Fall festivals?
Answer: The Spring and Fall festivals are two of the most important events
for Gedatsu members. The Spring Festival is observed to thank God and all
spirits for their immeasurable blessings, and to pray for an abundant harvest.
The Fall Festival is held to thank God and all spirits for their blessings and the
harvest of the year. In a word, the festivals are the occasions for members to
deeply recognize that they receive immeasurable blessings from God and all

spirits and should appreciate it. This is the most important attitude for
humans. Gedatsu Kongo started these events for this purpose.
In the speech at the festivals, Gedatsu Kongo often stated as follows;
Everyone from all parts of the country, I wont say thank you for coming.
This is because this festival is not for me, but it is for you to appreciate
blessings you receive from God and all spirits.
It is important for us to remember this spirit of Gedatsu Kongo when
we attend the festivals.
Question 91: What is the significance of the Kanshakai service?
Answer: Members learn Gedatsu mainly at their branches. Kanshakai is one
of the most important events of each branch. Kanshakai, or the Appreciation
service, is held once a month at each branch. It is most important for all
members to participate in this service for their study of Gedatsu.
The most basic point of Gedatsu teachings is to recognize the
immeasurable blessings you receive from God and all people, things and
spirits everyday, and appreciate them. When you look into your present
existence, you may understand you are blessed with many things in your daily
life. You are allowed to exist and live by God. Your physical body is
inherited from your parents and ancestors. Everyday you eat meals three
times. These are all living things. Thanks to their sacrifice, you could sustain
your life. Thus your present status is totally due to the blessing from God,
people, things and spirits. When you deeply recognize these blessings, you
will be naturally thankful for them, and become aware of the meaning and role
of your existence in this world. This awareness will make you happy and
lively.
The reason why we attend the monthly Kanshakai is to be aware of the
immeasurable blessings you receive from God and all things, and to appreciate
them. When you attend the Kanshakai at your branch, you should sincerely
pray and say thank you to God and Gedatsu Kongo for their daily guidance
and protection. And you should promise God and Gedatsu Kongo to lead a
life of appreciation and gratitude each day. For this reason, the prayer is the
most important part of the Kanshakai service. Therefore, it is important not to
be late for the starting time of the service.
This is the basic significance of the Kanshakai. Besides these services,
it is also important to learn from the teachers about your attitude in your daily
life when you participate in the monthly service. It is also important to

communicate with other branch members and discuss about the improvement
of the branchs state of affairs. You are not a guest in the Kanshakai, but you
are the person who creates it. This attitude is most important when you attend
the monthly Kanshakai service at your branch.
Question 92: Why are both Tenjinchigi and Gochi Nyorai enshrined in the
altar of Gedatsu Church?
Answer: Tenjinchigi, which is enshrined at the center of the altar, is God of
the Universe who creates everything and allows all beings to exist on earth.
Gochi Nyorai, which is enshrined on the left, is the Universal Life Force,
which permeates throughout the universe and causes all beings to live.
Therefore, Tenjinchigi and Gochi Nyorai are similar in essence. Why did
Gedatsu Kongo enshrine both of these at the altar to pray then? The form of
the Gedatsu altar represents Gedatsu Kongos view on religions. We should
understand this.
From ancient times, most Japanese people believed in both Shinto and
Buddhism. They have both a Shinto altar and a butsudan or Buddhist altar at
their homes. This is most common with Japanese peoples religious faith.
When Japanese parents have their babies, they visit a Shinto shrine to bless the
babies. Their wedding ceremonies are usually observed in the Shinto
tradition, and their funerals are held by Buddhist service. This is most
common for Japanese people. Thus, Shinto and Buddhism live together in
harmony and peace in Japanese culture. Gedatsu Kongo valued this religious
tradition of Japanese people, and believed this spirit of religious harmony
should lead us to world peace.
Tenjinchigi or God of the Universe in the center of the altar is
enshrined in the Shinto manner. Therefore, when we pray to Tenjinchigi we
clap hands just as when we pray at a Shinto shrine. Gochi Nyorai on the left is
enshrined in the Buddhist way. Gochi Nyorai, which literally means the
Universal Buddha of Five wisdoms, is the generic name of Dainichi Nyorai,
Ashuku Nyorai, Hosho Nyorai, Amida Nyorai and Shaka Nyorai, which
represent various activities of the universal life. Therefore, when we pray to
Gochi Nyorai we do not clap hand as when we pray at a Buddhist temple.
The Holy Goho is a symbol of Gochi Nyorai. Gedatsu Kongo
inscribed the Holy Goho with five red sacred characters, which represent
Gochi Nyorai. The octagonal Kuyo Stupa is also an expression of Gochi
Nyorai. On the top and four sides of the stupa are printed the five red symbols

of Gochi Nyorai and its names. The names of various spirits including our
ancestors spirits are written between each name of Gochi Nyorai. This means
that we are allowed to exist by Gochi Nyorai or the Universal Life Force, and
are provided and nurtured by many people and things including our ancestors.
Thus, the altar of Gedatsu Church is enshrined with the only Universal
Life Force in both the Shinto and Buddhist manner. This is an expression of
our founder Gedatsu Kongos view on religions. He emphasized that Gedatsu
is not biased to any particular religious traditions. We should respect the
essential common ground of all religions, which should be one.
We have many kinds of religions in the United States: Christianity,
Muslim, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. Each of them has its own rituals,
doctrines, and symbols to pray to. They may look different. Some religions
fight each other. However, when you look deeply into each tradition, you will
be able to find a common ground within each of them. When you see this
common ground, you will be able to appreciate all traditions. This should be
the path to world peace. This is the spirit of Gedatsu. Gedatsu Kongo
expressed this spirit as the form for the Gedatsu altar.

Question 93: Why does Gedatsu respect Ujigami and our family Buddhist
temples?
Answer: From ancient times, Japanese people have paid their respect to their
Ujigami, or the local Shinto shrine. Each region has its Ujigami, and all
inhabitants of the area serve their Ujigami as its members. They participate in
the festivals of the shrine. On certain occasions they visit their Ujigami, pay
their respects, and appreciate its blessings and protection. This is the Japanese
peoples custom from ancient times.
We receive immeasurable daily blessings from our local guardian
spirits. We are protected by them. Therefore, it is important for everyone to
pay respect to them and appreciate their blessings regardless of religions or
nationality.
Each family in Japan has belonged to their family Buddhist temple.
They visit their temple and observe the family ancestor blessing there. They
enshrine their ancestors in the Buddhist altars at their homes, and pay their
respect everyday. This is Japanese peoples traditional way of life and their

religious faith.
Gedatsu Kongo valued this tradition, and urged us to practice it in our
daily life. This is why Gedatsu respects Ujigami and our family Buddhist
temple.
Question 94: Why is Gedatsu called non-sectarian?
Answer: Gedatsu is a non-sectarian religious study. This is Gedatsu Kongos
basic view on religions. He stated, There should not be any boundaries
among religions in the world. The altar of Gedatsu Church is an expression
of this idea of Gedatsu Kongo.
Gedatsu Kongo stated, The path of God is only one. The universe is
unified under one law. He called this boundless universal world Gedatsu.
It is not difficult to see this world. Open your eyes widely and just look at
nature as it is. When you look up at the sky, you will find no partition there.
The universe is whole without any partition. It is an infinite boundless world
of complete freedom. This infinite world of life is called God.
There are many religions in the world. Looking into their doctrines
and rituals, they may sometimes look mutually exclusive. However, when
you look more deeply into them, you will surely be able to see a basic
common ground that is universal. When we realize this universal world, there
should be no conflicts among different religious practices. People would
mutually respect and appreciate other values and practices, and cooperate with
each other for world peace. This is the goal in Gedatsu study.
But, the reality of religions in the present world looks quite different.
They are exclusive and intolerant to other religions. Many of them are caught
in sectarianism and dogmatism. As long as you are bound by sectarianism,
your faith is lacking. You should be free from your fixed views and more
open to different traditions. When you show depth in your faith and widen
your views, you will be able to see an infinite universal world that is common
to all religious practices. Gedatsu Kongo called this Gedatsu. When you
reach this stage, you will be able to attain true faith in God.
When you show depth in your faith and widen your views, you will be
released from sectarianism and will see a boundless world of universal
religion. The difference of doctrines, rituals, and symbols of worship does not
matter any more at this stage. Our love and sincerity, which was cultivated
through our Gedatsu study and practice, will penetrate other peoples hearts
and move them. This will be a step toward world peace. This is because

Gedatsu Kongo established Gedatsu as a non-sectarian religious study. We

should understand this deeply.
Question 95: What is the significance of Gedatsu as home-based religious
study?
Answer: Gedatsu Kongos main motive to establish Gedatsu was to make
religion based on ones daily living. Religion should be practiced in ones
daily life. This way of religious study and practice will lead everyone to true
happiness. Gedatsu Kongo opposed the traditional religious establishment
that was only for professional priests, and that was separated from peoples
daily lives. That was why Gedatsu Kongo established Gedatsu.
Gedatsu Kongo stated, Life is religion, religion is life. He tried to
liberate religions from professional priests to ordinary people. In the first half
of his life, he lived in the business world as a lay person. After he established
Gedatsu, Gedatsu Kongo did not look like a professional priest. His way to
guide people was unusual. He taught people based on their daily activities.
During his lifetime, Gedatsu Kongo did not build cathedrals or big
church buildings except the Tokyo main church. Instead, he urged people to
learn Gedatsu at branches which were members homes. He did not appoint
anyone as a professional teacher, but appointed some ordinary members as
branch leaders, who would guide members of the branch. Branch leaders have
their own jobs and at the same time they teach members of their branches.
This is what Gedatsu Kongo thought religion should be.
Question 96: What is the objective of our Gedatsu study?
Answer: The objective to study Gedatsu is to be truly happy. Gedatsu is the
path of happiness for everyone, and the path of world peace. Gedatsu is to
awaken to the life of gratitude through self-reflection and self-understanding.
We humans are more or less egotistical. But, we are not aware of this.
This causes us various sufferings and conflicts with other people. In order to
avoid troubles and conflicts with other people and to lead a happy life, we
must be aware of our self-centeredness.
When you look deeply into your existence, you will understand your
existence is not possible without many blessings from everything on earth.
First, our life is not created by our will. It is a gift from God or the universal
life through our parents and ancestors. In our daily lives, we consume many

things. We breathe the air, drink water, receive sunlight, live in houses, etc.
Our everyday life itself is a blessing of everything in the universe.
When we are deeply aware of this, we will be naturally grateful to all
people and things for their blessings, and wish to live fully to benefit other
people and society as a token of appreciation. At that time, we would not be
as egotistical as before, and be more considerate to other people. This
realization will lead everyone to true happiness. This is Gedatsu.
Question 97: I have felt more restricted and more uncomfortable after I
joined Gedatsu. Why is that?
Answer: Some people may have felt more restricted after they began to study
Gedatsu. This is because they regard Gedatsu as a moral code of should and
should not. There are many elements which look like moral standards in
Gedatsu Kongos teachings such as self-reflection and self-renunciation,
the highest moral, etc. If you understand these teachings as moral codes,
you may feel strongly restricted by these. But, this is not what Gedatsu Kongo
meant.
Gedatsu Kongo emphasized the significance of self-realization. This
means, Gedatsu is not a path which forces people to be restricted within the
framework of moral codes. Gedatsu is to be deeply aware of your innermost
divine self and to follow the true self within you. In other words, Gedatsu is
to believe in God, who allows you to exist, to totally trust the divine will, and
to do your best in your duties which are given by God. This is the path to lead
everyone to true happiness and peace.
Question 98: What is the benefit of the Gedatsu study?
Answer: The benefits you can get by studying Gedatsu are innumerable. But,
this does not mean that you would be able to get whatever you want if you
study Gedatsu.
One of the major teachings of Gedatsu Kongo was unconditional
gratitude. When you get something you want or when everything goes
smoothly, you will be grateful for that. But, it is hard to be appreciative when
something unfavorable happens to you. Gedatsu Kongo urged us to be
thankful for whatever happens to you even when you meet with hard times.
This is the path which leads everyone to true happiness.
It is important to accept whatever happens to you. This is because

your present situation is the fruit of the whole of your past. Without a single
element of your past, your present status is not possible. Thanks to your past,
you could meet Gedatsu and learn the path of happiness. No matter what
difficulties you may have, everything is a blessing which will lead you to
happiness. Appreciate everything about your present situation. If you find
faults or negative elements in you, try to correct them and start afresh now.
Do not deny your past, but appreciate it. And start to live fully with gratitude
today. This is Gedatsu, which is the path of gratitude, hope and happiness.
Question 99: How can I explain Gedatsu to my friends?
Answer: This is an important question for Gedatsu members. But, you dont
have to think about it too seriously.
Gedatsu is the path of happiness for everyone. It is a non-sectarian
study, which respects all traditions and appreciates the common ground of all
religions. When you look deeply into your existence, you will be aware that
you are allowed to live by God or the universal life, and that you receive
immeasurable blessings from your parents, ancestors, and all people and
things around you. When you realize this, you will be naturally grateful for all
that support you and wish to live to benefit other people and society as a token
of appreciation. This path of appreciation and gratitude will lead you to true
happiness.
In this sense Gedatsu is the path of peoples happiness and world peace
based on ones self-awareness and gratitude.
Question 100: How can I explain Gedatsu in a word?
Answer: Gedatsu is, in a word, the path of freedom and happiness. Gedatsu
Kongo always emphasized the importance of self-reflection. This is because
to self-reflect your wrong attitude and correct it is the path to lead you to
happiness.
During our lifetime, there may occur various events, sometimes happy
and sometimes sorrowful and difficult. You may have come to a deadlock in
life sometimes. However, you are still alive here and now. This is a blessing.
Looking deeply into your present existence, you will be aware that you
receive immeasurable blessings. We usually take everything for granted. But,
our present existence is possible because of the blessings from God, ancestors,
parents, and all people and things around us. When you realize this, you will

be grateful for everything that supports you, and feel happy and peaceful. And
as a token of appreciation, you will feel free and happy, and really wish to live
for peoples happiness and world peace. This is why we call Gedatsu the path
of freedom and happiness.
