INTRODUCTION TO SERVICE SECTOR


The Service Sector is largest and fastest growing sector in the world economy, accounting largest share in total
output and employment in most developed countries. The share of services sector in total GDP is 47 percent in
low income countries, 53 percent in middle income countries and 73 percent in high income countries. The
sector accounts for a significant and rising share in cross-border trade and foreign direct investment and gives
more export opportunities for services suppliers and lower costs for imported services.

WORLD BANK DEFINITION

Services correspond to ISIC divisions 50-99 and they include value


added in wholesale and retail trade (including hotels and restaurants), transport, and government, financial,
professional, and personal services such as education, health care, and real estate services. Also included are
imputed bank service charges, import duties, and any statistical discrepancies noted by national compilers as
well as discrepancies arising from rescaling. Value added is the net output of a sector after adding up all outputs

and subtracting intermediate inputs. It is calculated without making deductions for depreciation of fabricated
assets or depletion and degradation of natural resources. The industrial origin of value added is determined by
the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC), revision 3.

The average for 2013 was 80.06 percent. The highest value was in Hong Kong: 92.74 percent and the lowest
value was in Singapore: 74.86 percent. The Above graph show the data for top 20 countries. Data are available
