LTE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

LTE CONCEPTS FOR BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS (2 hrs)

5
most
difficult

TARGET AUDIENCE: BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS | PREREQUISITES: GENERAL TECHNICAL FAMILIARITY WITH 3G WIRELESS TECHNOLOGIES

This high level seminar, targeted to a non-technical audience, begins with the cellular evolution to 4G and overviews the key features of 4G networks. It then introduces
LTE concepts and terminology. Finally, the course summarizes LTE operations and challenges.
1
LTE FUNDAMENTALS FOR ENGINEERS (2 hrs)

TARGET AUDIENCE: TECHNICAL MANAGERS | PREREQUISITES: GENERAL TECHNICAL FAMILIARITY WITH 3G WIRELESS TECHNOLOGIES

This high level technical seminar begins with an overview of the EPS network architecture and summarizes the physical channel structure. It then provides insights for
Downlink (DL) and Uplink (UL) operations of LTE. Finally, the course presents conceptual similarities and differences between LTE and HSPA.
2
LTE TECHNICAL OVERVIEW 1(1 day)

TARGET AUDIENCE: NETWORK/RF/SYSTEM ENGINEERS, NETWORK PLANNERS | PREREQUISITES: GENERAL TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE OF 3G WIRELESS TECHOLOGIES

This course provides the student with an introduction and overview of the LTE cellular telephony system. The course opens with a section about the advantages of
LTE over current 2G and 3G systems, then examines the standards that support LTE and the standards evolution that leads from 3G to LTE. Brief technical overviews
of OFDM, MIMO, network topology, Downlink, and Uplink are presented. Also included are simple call flows to illustrate the signaling and channel usage in typical
scenarios including cell selection, registration, and a data call. Finally, deployment challenges are discussed, including Voice over LTE, Interoperation with other 3G
technologies, and performance.

2
LTE NETWORK PLANNING (2

TARGET AUDIENCE: NETWORK PLANNERS, RF/NETWORK ENGINEERS | PREREQUISITES: LTE TECHNICAL OVERVIEW, UMTS NETWORK PLANNING (RECOMMENDED)

The course begins with a quick reminder of LTE system architecture and air interface characteristics. That is followed by a discussion of interference as applied
to LTE, RF propagation models, and antenna considerations. The course provides hands-on practice of Link budget calculations and associated formulations to
analyze sensitivity impact across variables and to resolve specific case studies. It then provides an overview of parameterization to generate coverage predictions, using a commercial network planning prediction tool. This tool is also used to predict the effects of spectrum when overlaying LTE on 1X (at 850 MHZ)
and UMTS (at 2100 MHz).

LTE AIR INTERFACE
(3

TARGET AUDIENCE: SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS | PREREQUISITES: LTE TECHNICAL OVERVIEW COURSE IS RECOMMENDED

This course provides an in-depth discussion of the LTE air interface. The course begins with an overview of LTE/E-UTRAN network architecture and protocols and introduces OFDMA, the key technology of LTE. It then discusses the DL and UL channels, signals, and operations. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion of the MAC,
RLC, and PHY layers of the LTE air interface.

LTE CORE NETWORK
(22 days)

TARGET AUDIENCE: NETWORK/RF/SYSTEM ENGINEERS, SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS | PREREQUISITES: LTE TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

This course provides an overview of LTE-EPC core networks including signaling. It begins with a review of the LTE network architecture and then covers EPC components
and interfaces, EPS bearers, QoS and security mechanisms, IP address management options, and GTP and PMIP based IP mobility procedures. The course concludes by
examining interworking scenarios with 3GPP networks.

3
LTE CALL PROCESSING
(2

TARGET AUDIENCE: NETWORK/RF/SYSTEM ENGINEERS | PREREQUISITES: LTE TECHNICAL OVERVIEW, LTE CORE NETWORK

This course illustrates step-by-step procedures performed by LTE User Equipment (UE) from initial power-on through data transfer and service utilization. The
course details the EPS registration procedure, the associated control messaging and parameter configuration of the various nodes and interfaces in EUTRAN
and the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and the establishment of EPS bearers. It then summarizes QoS support, including an illustration of packet filters, packet
marking, and charging to explain how user plane data flows through the EPS network. The course additionally presents mobility in idle and connected states
and describes measurement configuration, cell reselection and handover for both intra-LTE and inter-RAT (UTRAN and eHRPD). Finally, the concept of Circuit
Switched Fallback (CSFB) is introduced whereby support for CS voice is achieved by redirection of a UE to an underlying UTRAN or 1xRTT network.

LTE TROUBLESHOOTING AND PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP
(2

TARGET AUDIENCE: NETWORK/RF/OPTIMIZATION/SYSTEM ENGINEERS | PREREQUISITES: LTE TECHNICAL OVERVIEW, LTE CALL PROCESSING OVERVIEW

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the LTE terminology, key standards specification, tools and performance analysis based on typical scenarios. They will
get hands-on log analysis experience of typical scenarios that they may encounter when deploying LTE. For each scenario, exchange of signaling messages, interaction
between protocol layers, and important metrics to analyze performance are explained using the log files. The guidelines and processes covered in the course can be
applied to standard analysis tools.
