About this document

About this document

Database Description for BRM Measurements is a reference guide for
Nokia NetAct users describing the architecture of the NetAct PM
(Performance Management) database, its relation to BRM PM tables and
views, and the individual counters and keys contained in the tables and
views.
As a reader you should have some basic knowledge about network
performance management as well as basic knowledge about BRM. For
more information on the NetAct PM solution, see Reporter and
Performance Management Principles.
All information in this document relates to Nokia NetAct Release OSS4.0.
This document supports measurements and counters up to BRM 1.0
release.

Explanation

Adaptation

In this case the term describes a component that can be installed on the
NetAct system and that implements functionality to integrate the PM data
for a certain NE to the system, so that it is available for reporting.

Measurement group

See measurement type

Measurement type

A measurement type is used to group a set of keys and counters that

logically belong together.

Object level

An object level is a level in the hierarchy of the network. In a BSS system

this would be, for example, BTS or BSC.

Object type

See object level

Raw measurement

Measurements that are not yet aggregated but are on the level on which
the NE has sent them.

Summary measurement

Measurements that have been aggregated already in time and/or object

direction.

Overview

Overview
This chapter describes:

3.1

how the views and tables described in this document fit into the
overall picture of the NetAct Performance Management database;
see section The PM database and its relation to BRM measurement
tables and views.

what BRM summary measurement tables are and from where they
receive their data; see section Reporter summary measurement
tables and views.

The PM database and its relation to BRM

measurement tables and views
The NetAct BRM PM adaptation is one functionality of the NetAct system.
It ensures the transfer of measurement data from the network element to
NetAct. It is used to generate measurement tables for the BRM network
elements from the overall NetAct PM database and to create views to
these tables.
Through these views you can see the results of the performance
measurements generated by the BRM network element(s). You should
always use suitable views to access the database instead of accessing the
tables directly.
In the NetAct BRM PM adaptation, each view comprises the keys and
counters relevant for one or more object types (brm, for example) and for
one measurement type (aggregat, for example).

3.2

Reporter summary measurement tables and views

Reporter is a NetAct functionality designed to help you analyse and
optimise your managed network to ensure quality for end users and to
enable long-term forecasting. For more information about Reporter, refer to
Reporter and Performance Management Principles.
Reporter uses raw measurement tables and summary measurement
tables to store the raw data and the summarised (aggregated) data. These
tables are not accessed directly but Reporter uses views to access the
data in a table. You should always use suitable views to access the
database instead of accessing the tables directly. This ensures, for
example, that access to PM data is preserved after an upgrade and that
compatibility with network element releases is supported. For more
information on views, see chapter 4 Views and database schema
overview.
The counters in the summary measurement tables are the same as in the
Reporter raw views described in this document. The data from the
Reporter raw views is summarised to the Reporter summary tables to
different levels in time and network dimension:
.

Object levels <objectlevel>

The object level summarisation is based on a hierarchical structure
and is calculated upwards.

Overview

The various summary measurement tables that are available for the
different BRM performance measurement tables are listed in chapter
6 Summary measurement tables and views along with the table
descriptions.

Note
Not all time granularities are available for all measurement tables. The
available time granularities are listed for each combination of
measurement type and object level in the subchapters of chapter 6
Summary measurement tables and views. For information on time
granularities per measurement, see Appendix A Time granularities.

3.2.1

Reporter database object naming conventions

The names of Reporter BRM database objects, (for example, tables,
views, and primary keys) are built according to the following naming
convention:
<subsystem_abbreviation>_<db.object>_<Reporter.meas.
type>_<objectlevel>_<tgr>

The values in brackets are placeholders and stand for:

.

the abbreviation of the subsystem <subsystem_abbreviation>

All Reporter BRM database object names start with MADN3P.

database object <db.object>

The Reporter database objects adhere to the following naming
convention:

measurement type <Reporter.meas.type>

The measurements collected from a NE are grouped into different
measurement types. The name of this measurement type can be
found from each summary table to ease identifying tables belonging
to a certain measurement type.

object level <objectlevel>

Defines the level in the object hierarchy for which data is available in
the given table or view.

time granularity <tgr>

The counters are summarised for the duration of one hour, one day,
one week, the busiest hour of a day, and the busiest hour of a week.

Naming schema information for PM data cleanup

Appendix E Naming schema information for PM data cleanup

This appendix provides the mapping between naming for each
measurement in the n3prapsysrcmx.cf and n3prapsysgcmx.cf
configuration file and measurement name in the measurement tables for
PM data cleanup. The configuration file contains the storing period of the
data in the database from each <object_level>.<measurement_type>.
There is a one to one relationship in the rules in the n3prapsysrcmx.cf
and n3prapsysgcmx.cf configuration tables and the aggregated
measurement tables. Hence, there is a fixed life for the measurement at a
particular object and time level.
