The Existence of Mermaids

The existence of mermaids is shown in different period of time, and the evolution of the
mermaid is based on the Aquatic Ape theory. The purpose of this research report was to show
evidences on the existence of mermaids. The importance of this research report is to provide
awareness of the evolution and existence of mermaids based on studies and sightings. The
information in this research report contained four sources : First, the Aquatic Apes theory which
talked about an information about human evolution. Second, Nicole Canfields article provided
an information of sighting mermaids in a different period of time . Third, an article published on
myths.e2bn that talked about the myth and legend of mermaids. Fourth, Janet Grace Ortigass
article that explained an information about the Natural Selection Theory. Fifth, Mermaid : the
Body Found documentary from Animal Planet showed the evidence and hypothesis of
mermaid.

Myth and Legend of Mermaids

Mermaid, the aquatic creature with the upper body of human and the tail of fish, had been
shown in the different place and period of time and also appeared in the legend of several
country. Based on the information from the organization called E2BN which published in 2006,
one of the most famous legend about mermaids was appeared in Europe, that is mermaids are
beautiful creature who love to comb their hair. Theyre usually shown with a comb and a mirror.
Mermaids usually sit on a rock and sing to luring the sailors to their destruction, or sometimes

luring a beautiful young man to the deep sea with them. In the Breton ballads mermaids are
called 'Morgan', sea-women, and 'Morverch', sea-daughters; in Ireland and Scotland they are
are called 'Merrow. In Slavic mythology, there are the legend about Rusalki, the spirits of young
women who have met their fate through drowning to the ocean and becoming a mermaids,
which is shown that mermaid have been shown in different places. Moreover mermaids also
exist in the old Thai literature. Sightings of mermaids were made by the early Arabs and the
Greek Pliny in 586 A.D. Many medieval sailors said that they have seen them and such reports
continued right into the 1900's. Christopher Columbus, reported seeing three mermaids in the
ocean off Haiti, in January of 1493. He said they "came quite high out of the water, but were not
as pretty as they are depicted, for somehow in the face they look like men."

Natural Selective Theory

Sightings of mermaids still continued occurring until now a day .The National Ocean
Service reported to WWN that the 65 mermaid experts and the researchers gathered in Tahiti
Island to examine the evidence of half-human half-fish hybrids. They said that most of the
mermaids lived in the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean sea, where the waters are warmer.
WWN recently claimed that the U.S. government has captured seven mermaids, and they are
being studied in an undisclosed aquarium. Not only the rumors of sightings and capturing of
mermaids can prove the existence of mermaid, but now some theory in science can also prove
the existence of mermaid. Some scientists said that mermaids are real, because if humans can
be exists then, its possible to have some superior life forms like humans. Plus just only because
we cannot see them it doesn't mean they do not actually exist. According to Natural selection
theory, which talked about the process by which organism can change their normal behavior or
their habitat to allow the organism to adapt to its environment in order to survive, by causing a
population to change the animal's physical appearance to create an entirely new species

(Ortigas, 2013) . The hypothesis of this theory that published on Animal planet about mermaids
explained that, once there was a human (not a modern human) living in the island. But the
island are lacking of food and also earthquake and the eruption of the volcanoes occurring very
often. Thus, people started living beside the sea to get food. And then people started to spend
more time in the sea and less time in the land, the evolution of human started to begin. Human
at those land can hold their breath longer, their hair started to stop growing, and their eyes turn
to be the eyes of fish. And then human started to live in the sea.

The Aquatic Ape theory And the Hypothesis of Mermaids

According to Animal Planet television show, the following evidences strongly suggested that
humans shared an evolutionary history with mermaids. It was because, first, humans could
control and hold their breath longer than other terrestrial animals. The longest time for human to
hold their breath under the water is twenty-two minute by Stig vall Severinsen, the Danish free
driver. And also Human babies can instinctively hold their breath when underwater, which can
prove an evidence of our aquatic past. Second, Humans are hairless if were compared to other
animals that living on land.Third, human are born with insulating fat just like marine mammals.
Mermaids advanced an idea known as the aquatic ape theory. Thus, the hypothesis showed
that human used to live in the sea before getting into land, which that mean maybe there are
some ancestor that did start an evolution to live on the land, but continue living in the sea

Conclusion
The purpose of this research report was to show evidences on the existence of mermaids.
Based on the research article, the legend and the existence of mermaid had been shown in a
long different period of time. But not only the legend that assured the existence of mermaid but
also science. The Aquatic Ape theory and the Natural Selective theory also prove the existence

of mermaids. Finally this research report recommends further studies on the evolution of human
and the evidence of the existence of mermaids in Egypt.
