American History Expert System Development Project
BayNet, with the assistance of BALIS, is applying for two grants, one each from Apple
Computers and the California State Library’s LSCA Title III funds. Using Hypercard, a
computer tutorial program will be developed to assist American History students doing
library research for term papers. If funded, this grant will involve seven or eight multi-type
Bay Area libraries: UC Berkeley, CSU Hayward, St. Mary’s, Clayton Valley High School,
Diablo Valley Community College, Contra Costa Public Library System, and Oakland Public
Library. The Graduate Theological Union Library in Berkeley is also interested. The project
will take approximately one and a half years and will result in an expert system shell, core
modules of bibilographic instruction, and a handbook enabling librarians with minimum
computer expertise and the appropriate hardware to adapt the system to their collections.
Any questions or comments should be directed to Pat Kreitz at UC Berkeley. (415) 642-7600.
