If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
Each student is unique in their own way. I have observed that some of the boys
and girls enjoy playing and watching sports, while others aspire to be singers
and meteorologists. This lesson prompt will allow them to pick their topic
based on their interests. Many of them have shown dislike for specific prompts
that they are required to write about. I did an activity where they pick their
prompt and write a story for me to read. They really enjoyed that activity so
they will enjoy this lesson.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
This activity requires the students to write a biography about someone famous
that they admire. This community values Hispanic and African American
athletes and scholars, so I have given them the liberty to chose someone who
is important to them to write about.
This is a very close-knit community so I will give them the option of doing their
writing assignment on someone within the community. There is also a big value
in family, so I will allow them to do the biography on a family member that is
older than them.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
The students who need additional enrichment will be given the option of
completing the following activities:

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
Over 80% of the students at this BGC are bilingual. Many of them are still
considered to be ELL students. My differentiation will depend on the level of
the student and their writing skills.
I will use visualizations and models to show what I am expecting. (JG, Rachel,
James, Alex) These students expressed that they love when their teachers use
models and learn best from it.
I will give verbal instruction for those students who have expressed that they
prefer lectured instructions. (Eden, Maria, Noah) These students say that they
work best when they are given detailed and thorough instructions.
I will give a rubric to those students who prefer a hard-copy summary of my
expectations and requirements for this lesson. (Kiki, Melony, Jessica, Tyler)
These students get tired of how long it takes to give instructions. They believe
that they would be able to
For some students, I will allow them to create a piece of artwork that
summarizes their subject, while also providing at least one paragraph as their
writing piece. (YR) This student has a speech emergent proficiency level. He is
capable of writing one paragraph, but tends to make more mistakes. The art
piece will give him the opportunity to successfully share his knowledge.
Others will need to use labels and illustrations to complete their assignment.
(JM) This student is in the first grade and he needs more support with reading
and writing due to his low proficiency level.
