natural gas. natural gas. how much is left and consumed. Russia. and oil. and other vehicles. Dead plants and animals along with peat and rocks formed what is known today as oil. As the developing countries such as China and India become more westernized. All three were formed hundreds of millions years ago before dinosaurs. so the long term view of America's lifestyle can be a dangerous unless changes are made so Americans can be less dependent on oil. This resource provides the gas needed to power cars. and Texas. Most of the fossil fuel consumption especially oil comes from the United States. and the proposed social effects as the world reserves are depleted are very important to understand the issues that revolve around oil dependency. This puts America in a situation where it is dependent on unstable trade partners for an important resource. possible alternative resources. This constant and growing consumption of oil and depleting reserves of oil is a real issue.S. environmental effects. and coal. Even though we have some reserves in Alaska. the U. trucks. it is not enough to make up the difference . This will obviously create a future problem of oil shocks due to shortages. America imports most of its oil from foreign countries.Oil Dependency 2 Modern human lifestyle especially when it pertains to the American lifestyle is heavily dependent on oil. America is consuming 25% of the world's reserves of oil. California. It also used in machines that prepare our food. Examining where oil and other fossil fuel comes from. not only financially but most importantly socially. gets its oil mainly from the Middle Eastern nations. what is it used for. There are actually three forms of fossil fuels which are coal. and Iran. it is only a matter of time when they too will be consuming just as much oil. These include countries like Saudi Arabia. This caused price increases and impacted businesses worldwide. U. Some experts are measuring that the oil that we have discovered so far can only be sustained for 40 years maximum. There is no exact number of how much oil is left. by far the most important use of oil is in our food system. They are used to produce or in some form utilized in the production of clothes. process. therefore once it is used it is gone. Of course oil is used in vehicles such as trucks. cars. It is alarming as oil reserves deplete and usage increases. Oil is used more than just for transportation. packaging. However. It is not recyclable. . has begun to compete with other countries for the world’s oil reserves. and airplanes however it is used in other things that most people don’t realize. As China and India begin to build there infrastructure more productively as well as modernizing there lifestyles similar to the west. Oil is needed to produce the foods. This huge consumption of oil has led to price shocks. fertilizer. Life will stop to a grinding halt without this resource. it does not change the fact of the depleting reserves of oil deposits. this has led to a huge consumption of oil. Because of the price increases. The slow down in economies eventually turned to what is now today a deep recession causing the price to come back down. It is significant to point out that fuel fossils are not renewable.S. and even in modern medicines. spending slowed down which in effect reversed the boom in construction in developing countries. and the most obvious is the distribution of the foods. Even though the slow down of the world economies led to a lower consumption of oil. heating a home.Oil Dependency 3 needed to meet the demand of Americans. The daily life of a human on planet earth is heavily dependent on oil. buses. plastic. The average daily use of oil has been eighty four million barrels.
Non-renewable energy cannot be made as fast as it is consumed causing a limited supply. non.U. natural gas.renewable energy resources are far more limited.V. The ocean and land habitats may have been disturbed. Animals risk getting contaminated. diesel. The most important negative effect about oil in general is pollution. hydropower. This has led to far more environmental impacts that it should. Renewable energy resources are far different from non-renewable energy resources.’s. Exploration is beginning to take place all over the places that may contain oil and gas deposits. There is abundance in renewable energy in our environment. Cars like hybrids are better options to conserve energy and help reduce the damaging effects of energy over consumption. and other commodities derived from fossil fuels. Renewable energy includes solar power. It seems like many American households are driving around gas guzzling vehicles such as S. Another great method any person can apply to in their lives is making sure . One way is driving more gas efficient cars. Non-renewable energy sources include gasoline. Oil pipelines can sometimes leak it can cause environmental affects in the surroundings. and/or the use of agricultural products like corn. which is a non renewable energy source. There are renewable energy sources that can replace fossil fuels. coal. There are a number of ways to personally contribute to help conserve energy. There are alternatives to oil. many companies are taking advantage by profiting off it. Cars and other vehicles give off carbon dioxide which is linked to global warming. wind power. These energy resources are replenished fast and in no danger of being overused to the point of limited supply.Oil Dependency 4 As more people are aware of the shortage of oil. People are breathing in air that is heavily polluted which causes health problems in the long term. Simply put.
Given the fact there is a real oil problem. Just as explained earlier. This can possibly lead to a war. For example. Many are guilty of this and for them to stop this practice of taking long. hot showers. and just about anything else we use can be replaced with more energy efficient ones. it is needed in our food system.Oil Dependency 5 the appliances we use are energy efficient. The future social effects are also what give many experts very worried. this will create future shortages. Consumers slowed their spending which halted the economy as America’s GDP is 72% consumption. a biggest cause for concern would be that some areas can be cut off of food because the truckers are not able to deliver them. washing machines. A society that is heavily dependent on oil such as America will have a hard time if businesses and individuals do not have access for oil even for a brief period of time. An example of oil shortage that has already happened but under abnormal circumstances is a natural disaster such as a hurricane causing people waiting in long lines for gas and possible riots. We have already seen what price shocks will do to an economy such as the United States. Another method is for people to stop taking long. The social effect of this happening is dire as people become worrisome of the fact oil are in such short supply. Cutting costs such as lay offs can create less spending . Of course that was under an unusual situation however it gives an idea what would happen to a place where gas is such a resource that is heavily depended on. dryers. Dishwashers. which also applies to lights as well. Tensions will increase with other countries as they too will need oil to support their developing economies. hot showers will the overall conservation of energy. The oil shortage created a recessionary effect because businesses utilize fossil fuels had to increase price and or cut costs. We can also unplug them when they are not in use.
Oil Dependency 6 and a downward spiral occurs. In the mean time conserving the oil we do have can be a start. There is much needed assessment in our modern world in regards to the social consequences of oil shortages. Our modern system has to change with most likely using a non renewable energy resource. .
