BP will perform a “top kill” in an attempt to stop the uncontrolled flow of oil through the blowout preventer and plug the well on the seafloor: Blowout preventer (BOP) Manifold regulates mud flow Pipeline from ship
Existing choke and kill lines
Mud mixture is pushed through two 3-in. (8 cm) tubes into choke and kill lines of BOP at a rate of up to 40 barrels per minute
Mud forced down well to reverse oil’s flow; cement is then pumped into well to permanently plug it
If “top kill” fails, rubber balls, other junk will be shot into BOP to clog it; then “top kill” will be repeated Connects to manifold BOP
