Danment

celebrates 5th birthday
Danmrzmt, which started as a pilot scheme on Ist September 1992 with the Mayor of Ncestved making the first transaction, has celebrated its fifth birthday. During the five years of the scheme's existence, there has been much growth in the number of transactions, as well as in the range of services available: the system has gone national and now encompasses not just telephones, but also vending machines, parking meters, stamp machines, canteens, housing association launderette and much more. Coincidentally with the anniversary, the system has reached its ten-millionth transaction - more than 500,000 are made each month. During the second quarter of this year, a total of 1,323,102 transactions were made - an increase of 13% on the first quarter and more than 10% of all transactions for the five-year period. Elsewhere, we mention BT's experiment with the use of cards in parking meters. For Danm0nt, the first town to accept its cards for parking was Odense which has begun changing all of its 46 meters to accept the cards for payment. The change should be complete by the end of November. The first educational institution to use Danm0nt cards is a training college in Esbjerg. The college, which has around 500 students, will use the cards in its canteen, as well as in soft drink and coffee machines. It also has public telephones which accept the cards. Danish Scouts and Guides recently had a 'cashless camp' and the event appears to have been a great success. Danm0nt cards could be used throughout the camp and 100,000 transactions were made. Special cards with holes drilled in them were produced so that they could be worn around the neck for security and a new 'holey' variety to collect was, thus, created. Sponsors of the scheme were Den Danske Bank, Logos design, Post Danmark, Siemens Nixdorf and Tele Danmark.
