Snowy River National Park - General
Type National Park, Situated north of Orbost, stretching almost to the NSW boarder. Accessed on the west by the Buchan-Gelantipy Rd, north from Lakes Entrance [A1] (1 camp), Accessed on the east by the Yalmy Rd, (or the Bonang Rd) north from Orbost [A1] (5 camps), Accessed across the northern top by the McKillops Road [C611] link (2 camps). Site description The Snowy River National Park incorporates the Snowy River gorge which emphasizes the rugged nature of the Park. The tranquil river beaches illustrate the varied nature of the Park. The vegetation varies from warm temperate rainforest to sub-alpine forest to rain-shadow dry woodland. Fauna reflects this variety to provide a wide range of mammals, invertebrates and birds. The Snowy River provided the aborigines with a trail to the Snowy Mountains for at least 20,000 years, resulting in a number of important archaeological sites. The rugged terrain limited European intrusion to a few small settlements which have disappeared so that the Park remains remote and largely unchanged. Much of the Park is regarded as Wilderness Camping and touring is influenced by the weather. The Snowy River gorge (McKillop Bridge site) can be very hot and dry in summer. Access to most other sites may be closed in winter, when it is wet and cold. Spring and autumn remain as the best time to visit all sites. Bush camping is permitted anywhere in the park provided the Camping Code is observed.
