Social Studies: Curriculum Guide Pilots 2010-2011

Phase One: Initial Pilot U.S. History and Economics:

• Ten teachers per grade level (at least one from each campus)
• Four quarterly, all-day pull out meetings for collaborative review of student
work, lesson sharing, and materials revision.
• One day for peer observation of other pilot teachers.
• Eight, two-hour after-school meetings throughout the year for curriculum
sharing and assessment literacy strategies.
• Additional pay (2 hours per month) for teachers piloting new curriculum.

Phase Two: Second Year Curriculum Guide Pilot for Modern World History
includes:
• A variety of professional development options for teachers to implement
units from the curriculum guide and to collaborate with other teachers at
various points in the year. Participating teachers would be expected to
administer a unit’s culminating assessment, and to share modifications that
can be incorporated into the curriculum guide.

Option #1: Ten teachers will commit to teach the Modern World History
curriculum guide in common and will plan to meet throughout the year. This
option will include: up to four all-day pull out meetings for collaborative review of
student work, one day for peer observation, and six two-hour after school
meetings for curriculum sharing and formative assessment strategies.

Option #2: Ten teachers will agree to teach ONE unit in common at an identified
time of the year. This option will include: one all-day pull out meeting for
collaborative review of student work, one day for peer observations, and two,
two-hour after school meetings for curriculum sharing and formative assessment
strategies.

Option #3: Twelve teachers will agree to form year-long cohorts of four teachers
each for the purpose of observing each other teach lessons from the Modern
World History curriculum guide. These cohorts can be either within or across
schools. Each quarter, one member of the cohort will teach a demonstration
lesson, while the other members observe. After the lesson, teachers will debrief
and collaborate on the design and implementation of another upcoming lesson
from the guide. This option will include: four half-day release days and four, two-
hour after-school meetings to discuss protocols for observation and lesson-study
guidelines.
