Notes to editors: Govanhill Baths campaign The campaign to save Govanhill Baths began in January 2001 when Glasgow City Council informed the community that they were going to close it down. This was to be done without any consultation from the users or the local people, all of whom wanted to keep it open. The people of Govanhill occupied their pool from March until August 2001 until Sheriff Officers, Foot Police, horses and helicopters removed protesters and boarded up the Baths. The Trust is currently campaigning to re-open the pool as a Health and Wellbeing Centre for the benefit of the community of Govanhill and beyond. It has secured planning permission for the new facility.
