Speaking Points: Theresa Boyle Sr.

Vice President Strategy & Business Development

1. We are so excited about growing our services in Covington. As a member of this community for nearly 20 years, we have truly watched the community grow up around us. MultiCare has a strong, vested interest in the realization of all the great planning work done by the commission to form a truly vibrant town center. We want to make sure the outcome of this plan fits with the intent of this planning work. 2. Our ED Project will include the latest in medical technology, and at this time 22 private rooms. We fully expect there to a number of ambulances coming and going from our facility. For example, at two of our existing facilities, we see a number ambulances each day. One of our busy ED’s, located in East Pierce County, MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital, saw an average of over 35 ambulances per day in 2009. One of our smaller ED’s located at Allenmore Hospital in Tacoma saw an average of 9 ambulances in 2009. 3. ED’s do not belong in any kind of town center – they are busy, chaotic places where every last second of time in vital. In taking a look around the State, you do not see emergency departments in the town centers of other areas. This is because they are not pedestrian friendly operations and do not fit with what people want in a town center. There are no hospitals located within town centers, and in Issaquah where a freestanding ED is located, they chose not to locate that facility in any of the pedestrian oriented areas. 4. We urge this commission to ensure the planning work and intent of the development of a town center is realized, and we end up with a vibrant town center full of the type of development that fits with this vision. The stage is set in Covington to make leaps and bounds toward a City we are all proud to be a part of. These are legacy decisions that will have a tremendously positive impact on generations to come.
