I loved the leafy baby hat and wished that there was a sweater to match.

Being inexperienced enough to think that I could create a pattern, I charged ahead. (There is a German saying that translates loosely to “The Good Lord protects fools and drunks” and I don’t drink so you can fill in the rest.) So here it is.

Leafy Baby Sweater
Size 1/3mos Yarn Bernat Satin Sport - Jade 2 3 oz skeins for sweater and hat – 3.5 mm (US 4 ) needles Or needles needed to achieve gauge Gauge= 24 stitches x 30 rows = 4 x4 “

Collar & Yoke
All rows knit the first and last 4 stitches for the button bands ( I use markers to remind me) Buttonholes Knit stitch closest to edge, knit 2nd & 3rd stitches from edge together, YO between 3rd &4th stitches and knit 4th stitch Place button holes in right front band at ¾”, 2 ¾” 4 3/4”, 6 ¾”, 8 ¾” and 10 ¾” Cast on 51 stitches, (I used long tail) 43 stitches for the yoke with 4 stitches on either side First 5 rows Don’t forget buttonholes knit 1 x 1 ribbing (knit 1, purl 1 ) starting and ending with a knit stitch (RS) Next 36 rows Begin leaf lace pattern on a wrong side row remembering to knit the first and last 4 stitches. For each row knit across the same from Part 1, Part 2 twice, then Part 3. Don’t forget buttonholes Work 36 rows of pattern, you will end up with 227 stitches (219 lace stitches + 8 button band) Next row(WS) place markers (pm) to define front sides, sleeves and back sections: Knit 4 pm, purl 30, mp, purl 48, mp, purl 65, pm, purl 48, pm, purl 30, pm, knit 4. Next row (RS) divide sleeves and begin body Knit 4, knit to 2nd marker (you may remove markers), place 48 sleeves stitches on stitch holder , cast on 4 stitches for under arm seam (I used double cable cast on) knit next 65 stitches to 4th marker, (you may remove markers), place 48 sleeves stitches on stitch holder , cast on 4 stitches for under arm seam knit to last marker , knit 4.

Knit rows in stockinet, remembering to knit 4 button band stitches and to place button holes When body is 6” long from under arm stitches, on RS row, knit 1 x 1 ribbing (knit 1, purl 1 ) starting and ending with a knit stitch and knitting button band stitches. Bind off loosely in pattern

Slip sleeve stitches from stitch holder onto DPN (or same circular needle using magic loop) attach yarn leaving long tail to weave in (and tighten up any loose underarm seam stitches) First row knit 48 stitches from holder pick up 1 stitch before 4 cast on stitches, pick up 1 stitch in each of the 4 cast on stitches , then pick up 1 stitch between cast on stitches and sleeve stitches 54 (48 sleeve & 6 picked up) Second row Knit 48, K2tog, knit 1, pm, knit 1, K2tog. Knit 9 rows. Work decrease row Knit 1, SSK, knit to 3 stitches from marker, K2tog, Knit 1 Knit 6 rows, knit decrease row (4 times) Knit 1 row (42 stitches). Sleeve should measure 6” from seam. If not, continue stockinet until it does. Next row, knit decreasing 6 stitches evenly. (36 stitches) Knit 8 rows knit 1 x 1 ribbing, bind off loosely knitting in pattern. Repeat for second sleeve. Use tail under arm seam to tighten up any loose stitches, and weave in any loose ends. Sew button onto left button band.
