Tasks and Challenges
• • • • • PoN/NUST is competing with the mining industry not only in Namibia but also in the whole region for qualified staff! It is not guaranteed to find suitable candidates locally or in the region – majority of applications are from abroad. Large discrepancy in salary level between our university and the industry, similar salary level with ministries and public sector. Poaching of staff members is „good practise“ in Namibia. Slow and difficult work permit process for foreigners.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU DO NOT FIND THE RIGHT STAFF AT THE RIGHT TIME?

. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Helmut Mischo Presentation SOMP 2010 - Tallinn 20 June 2010 – No 8

Godfather System for Capacity Building
• Tying-in Professors from Partner Universities worldwide for taking a godfathership on a course and offering block lectures during implementation Employing young Namibian and SADC Mining Engineers (M.E.) for the respective courses as junior lecturers Namibian lecturers will accompany and support the visiting professor during his lecturing campaigns. Namibian lecturers will have to conduct research and read for their Ph.D. under the supervision of the visiting professor, both in Namibia and at the partner university. Namibians will gradually take over lecturing and research tasks from the visiting Professor, who will still act as a supervisor. Funds available with academic donor institutions Godfathership System already implemented in Civil Engineering together with German Universities .
