Garden Trellises for Support
Garden trellises are support structures used for vegetables and plants to keep them straight or to vine with ease. Some plants need to be tied onto the trellises and others are vines that will attach themselves onto them. Garden trellises are constructed of plastic, wood, or metal bars that are arranged to run diagonally, horizontally, or vertically. This device can create a decorative flower garden arrangement. It will add some vertical height to your tall flowers along with the feeling that there is something permanent growing in the garden. They are inexpensive to purchase and easy to uphold. You can purchase wooden garden trellises, garden arches, or wrought iron garden trellises from most home and garden centers or nursery centers. Once you have chosen the structure you want then you can pick your flowers that are to be attached. If you choose a wooden trellis make sure it has been pressure treated, it will last longer. Place your trellis in the garden where the flowers will receive the proper sunlight and moisture they need. Once the vine flowers start clinging to the trellis you will find it a little more difficult to maintain the structure; as long as the trellis is good and strong after you have placed it in the ground you should not have any problems. Garden trellises along with tomato cages are very common supports used in growing vegetables. There are some varieties of vegetable garden peas and vegetable garden beans that require a tall trellis for climbing. The horizontal growing vegetables such as melons, squash, and cucumbers need trellises that are lower to the ground in order to keep the produce cleaner and off the ground and so they do not have a flat spot from sitting on the ground which can cause rot. Tomatoes come in two varieties known as “indeterminate” and “determinate” The “indeterminate” classification means they will continue growing all season long. We need to keep the fruit from resting on the ground and the best way is using tomato cages, tomato ladders, or a tomato garden trellis. Those tomatoes classified as “determinate” grow to a particular height, display all their fruit at once and then stop growing. These tomato plants will also benefit from ladders, racks, and trellises to keep them cleaner and shaped more like the fruit they should be. Some gardeners with smaller garden areas will prefer planting the “bush” variety of cucumber, squash, and melon. The “bush” variety fruit should not be more than 3 pounds if it is going to work well. You will need to train the plants to grow somewhat vertical on sturdy trellises.

Some garden supply manufacturing companies have recently introduced a new type of support for tomatoes. These heavy-duty square tomato cages are much taller than the old original cone shaped style of cage and it will fold flat for storage in the off season. There are now some sturdy metal structures that are spiral in design to help support the main stem on the tomato plant which will allow the branches to extend outward and droop down. If you use these spiral structures for support, which is similar to those plants grown on a stake, you will need to prune and fasten them to the support. These newer cage and trellis items will most likely work much better than the cone shaped wire cage, and is easier to store.
