SIX EXERCISES OF SIX

– IN ORDER TO BE HEALTHY, THE FIRST RULE IS TO BE CLEAN

1).

CLEANLINESS

&

TIDY. TO TAKE

BATH REGULARLY WITH AMPLE OF WATER; TO WALK IN CLEAN AIR; TO BE AWAY FROM POLLUTION; TO FORM A HABIT OF CLEANLINESS. TO BRUSH THE TEETH AND MOUTH EVERY MORNING MEALS ETC, ARE GOLDEN RULES OF CLEANLINESS……

&

AFTER

2). MEALS - ALL OUR MEALS SHOULD BE SIMPLE & BALANCED. OUR RECIPE SHOULD INCLUDE GREEN VEGETABLES, MILK, SEASONAL FRUIT, CEREALS ETC. IT SHOULD CONTAIN ALL IMPORTANT ELEMENTS SUCH AS PROTEIN, FAT, CARBOHYDRATES, VITAMINS & MINERALS, SALTS ETC IN A BALANCED MANNER. BALANCED DIET PROVIDES US VITALITY. DRINKING WATER SHOULD BE CLEAN & FREE FROM GERMS. AT THE CAMPS WE SHOULD BE MORE CAREFUL IN PREPARING OR TAKING FOOD, WATER, MILK ETC….. 3). CLEAN AIR - WE CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT AIR EVEN FOR FEW MINUTES. THIS AIR IS GIVEN TO US BY GOD WITHOUT ANY CHANGE. BUT MODERN EQUIPMENTS, VEHICLES & OUR PROGRESSIVE INVENTIONS HAVE POLLUTED THE AIR. THE POLLUTED AIR CONTAINS LESS OF OXYGEN & MORE OF HARMFUL GASES. THE DESTRUCTION OF GREENERY & FORESTS HAS ALSO INCREASED POLLUTION. NOW IT IS OUR DUTY TO PLANT AND GROW MORE TREES & SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT…..
7

4). REST & SLEEP – EVERY HUMAN BEING REQUIRES REST & SLEEP FOR A DEFINITE PERIOD. IT HELPS US TO REGAIN STRENGTH & FRESHNESS. WE SHOULD TAKE REST & SLEEP FOR SUFFICIENT PERIOD. IT IS SAID “EARLY TO BED, EARLY TO RISE. THAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BE HEALTHY, WEALTHY & WISE.” EARLY RISING & TO START IMPORTANT WORK WITH FRESH MIND HAS ITS OWN REWARD; ONE SHOULD WORK HARD, IF HE WANTS TO GET A DEEP SLEEP. WE SHOULD ALSO REMEMBER THAT CHANGE OF WORK IS ALSO REST. AFTER LONG TIME OF STUDIES; PLAYING GAMES OR A WALK WILL MAKE YOU FRESH. IT IS TRULY SAID THAT “HARD WORK HAS NO ALTERNATIVE”…….. 5). EXERCISE – PHYSICAL EXERCISE HAS ITS OWN PLACE IN EVERY HUMAN BEING. EVEN ANIMALS & BIRDS ALSO DO SUFFICIENT EXERCISE TO KEEP THEM HEALTHY. MODERN AMENITIES & FACILITIES HAVE MADE US TO WORK LESS & GET MORE REST BUT STILL IT IS A FACT THAT MANY DISEASES OF TODAY ARE A DIRECT RESULT OF LESS PHYSICAL EXERCISE. IT SHOULD BE A HABIT FOR EVERY PERSON TO DO SOME PHYSICAL EXERCISES FOR AT LEAST HALF AN HOUR AT SUNSET & SUNRISE. LEARN SUCH EXERCISES FROM YOUR SM / GC OR PHE TEACHERS & EVEN SOME TV PROGRAMME. SWAMI VIVEKANAND TOLD US “A SOUND MIND IN A SOUND BODY”. A WEAK PERSON CANNOT HELP HIMSELF OR THE SOCIETY OR THE NATION. OUR FOUNDER LORD BADEN POWELL HAS SHOWN SIX EXERCISES KNOWN AS BP`S SIX FOR EVERY MEMBER OF OUR MOVEMENT…….

& SCRATCHES – FOR MINOR WOUNDS SUCH AS CUTS & SCRATCHES, CLEAN THE CUT WITH ANTISEPTIC LIQUID OR PURE WATER & APPLY A BANDAID. REMEMBER: 1) THE FIRST AIDER MUST WASH HIS HANDS BEFORE TOUCHING ANY DRESSING MATERIAL. 2) CLEAN THE WOUND BEFORE APPLYING DILUTE ANTISEPTIC LIQUID. CLEAN IT FROM OUTSKIRT FIRST & THEN FROM INSIDE TO OUTSIDE. 3) IF STILL THERE IS BLEEDING, A PIECE OF STERLIZED GAUGE SHOULD BE PRESSED ON THE WOUND FOR 10 MINUTES & LIFT THAT PART OF THE BODY. 4) SOFRAMYCIN CREAM SHOULD ALSO BE APPLIED. COVER IT WITH THE GAUGE & APPLY A LIGHT BANDAID...
CUTS

B)

BURNS

& SCALDS – & LOOSE BAND AID. BURNED & FLESH IS CHARRED.

IF ONE TOUCHES A HOT IRON OR COAL, THEN IT IS A MINOR BURN. IF BOILING WATER FALLS ON THE FOOT, IT IS A SECOND-DEGREE BURN. DON’T BREAK THE BLISTERS. COVER IT WITH DRY, STERLIZED GAUGE PAD IN THE THIRD DEGREE BURN, SKIN IS WITH CLEAN SHEET THIS IS DANGEROUS. COVER

& TAKE THE PATIENT IMMEDIATELY TO THE HOSPITAL. IN CASE OF CHEMICAL BURNS, WASH THAT PART WITH LOTS OF WATER. NEUTRALISE ACID WITH THE ALKALINE SOLUTION & VICE-VERSA. REMEMBER: DON’T TOUCH THE AFFECTED PART UN-NECESSARILY, IT MAY GET INFECTED. REMOVE RINGS, BANGLES BEFORE SWELLING OCCURS. GIVE SIPS- IF CONSCIOUS BUT NOTHING BY MOUTH IF UN-CONSCIOUS. IN CASE OF LARGE BURNS ALSO TREAT FOR SHOCK. DO NOT USE OILS OR LOTIONS. C) – MAKE HIM PINCH HIS NOSE & BREATHE THROUGH HIS MOUTH FOR 10 MINUTES. SPIT OUT THE BLOOD IF IT COMES IN MOUTH. RELEASE THE NOSE SLOWLY. IF BLEEDING CONTINUES, DO THE SAME PROCEDURE FOR NEXT 5 MINUTES. IF TAKE THE PATIENT TO THE HOSPITAL. DON’T ALLOW HIM TO BLOW THE NOSE AFTER THE BLEEDING HAS STOPPED.
BLEEDING FROM NOSE

STILL IT IS BLEEDING

D) STINGS – I) FOR STINGS OF AN INSECT LIKE A BEE - REMOVE THE STING WITH YOUR FINGER NAIL AND APPLY ICE-PACK TO RELIEVE PAIN. II) IN CASE OF SNAKE BITE – TWO FANG MARKS ARE EASILY SEEN IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE BITE.  WIPE OFF ANY VENOM OVER THE BITE. REMOVE THE BROKEN FANGS.
12

 LET THE CASALITY LIE DOWN. TIE A CONSTRICTION BANDAGE ABOVE THE BITE.  IMMOBILISE THE LIMB SO THAT VENOM DOESN’T SPREAD FAST. USE CRYOTHERAPY I.E. TAKE CRUSHED ICE & MAKE A COLLAR OF ICE AROUND THE BITE.  TAKE THE PATIENT TO THE NEAREST HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY. III) IN CASE OF ANIMAL BITE – TREAT THE WOUND AS ORDINARY WOUND. CLEAN WIPE-OFF THE SALIVA. CONSULT THE DOCTOR FOR FURTHER TREATMENT.
E). SPRAINS

THE WOUND

&

IT IS CAUSED DUE TO A JERK OR STRECHING OR TEARING AROUND THE JOINT. MANY

TIMES IT IS DIFFICULT TO MAKE OUT BETWEEN A SPRAIN AND A FRACTURE. IF THE ANKLE IS SPRAINED, PUT COLD COMPRESS OR ICE PACK OVER THE PART FOR

30

MINUTES. THEN APPLY A TIGHT ELASTIC

CRAPE BANDAGE. DO NOT MASSAGE OR RUB THE AFFECTED PART……. PARTICIPATE IN TWO PATROL/ COMPANY OUTDOOR MEETINGS OF A PATROL/ COMPANY DAY HIKE MEET BY PATROL AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE PATROL LEADER. THE PLACE SHOULD BE OUT UF YOUR SCHOOL OR INSTITUTION CAMPUS. IT MAYBE A TEMPLE OR FARM ON THE BANK OF A RIVER

& WORK OUT A PLAN FOR VARIOUS PATROL ACTIVITIES. EG A) PLAN FOR A PATROL PIONEERING PROJECT. B) PLAN FOR A DAY HIKE. C) HELP ONE ANOTHER FOR ADVANCEMENT IN THE MOVEMENT. D) SUGGESTIONS FOR THE COURT OF HONOUR. E) PLAN FOR A COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT. F) PLAN FOR A PROGRAMME IN CAMP FIRE. G) PROFICIENCY BADGE - DEMONSTRATION & DISCUSSION. H) A FUN MEETING. I) TREE IDENTIFICATION MEETING. J) KNOW THE STARS & CONSTELLATIONS K) BIRD WATCHING. L) PLAN FOR A WIDE GAME. ATTEND TWO SUCH MEETINGS & REPORT TO YOUR SM / GC.
WHERE THE PATROL HAS TO DISCUSS

– THIS IS AN ALTERNATIVE FOR OUTDOOR MEETINGS. “NO SCOUTING WITHOUT OUTING”. IN FACT SCOUTING IS AN OUTING – ‘SCIENCE OF OUTING’. HIKING IS AN OPPURTUNITY FOR FUN & ADVENTURE IN OUTDOOR LIFE. SCOUTS & GUIDES EXPLORE NATURE, KNOW THE NEW LAND, ITS VILLAGES, HILLS, FORESTS AND PLAINS. HIKING MAKES US HARD & HEALTHY. WE HAVE TO FACE THE ODDS OF NATURE ALSO. IT IS REALLY ENJOYABLE. OUR MIND BECOMES OPEN AND FREE. WE LEARN MANY NEW THINGS FROM AN
PATROL HIKE

13

EXPERIENCE OF HIKING. WE LEARN THE VALUE OF CO-OPERATION, USE COMMON SENSE, DEVELOP AND APPLY SCOUTING SKILLS, HELP ONE ANOTHER,

& ACHIEVE SOMETHING AT THE END OF A HIKING TRIP. A SCOUT/GUIDE GOES OUT WITH A PATROL IN UNIFORM ON FOOT IN A NEW LAND FOR ABOUT 5 KILOMETRES AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THEIR SM / GC AND DO ACTIVITIES LIKE OBSERVATIONS, GOOD TURNS, FLAG BREAK, PIONEERING WORK, NATURE STUDY, MEETING PEOPLE, GATHERING INFORMATION, COOKING ETC AND RETURN AS PER THE GIVEN ROUTE & TIME. THIS IS CALLED A PATROL HIKE. IT IS TO BE DONE IN A SCOUTS WAY. IN THE BEGINNING IT IS ONLY A DAY HIKE I.E. THE WHOLE HIKE IS OVER DURING THE DAY TIME MAY BE 6 HOURS OR MORE. THE HIKERS HAVE TO TAKE ALL NECCESARY THINGS WITH THEM. MAKE A LIST OF THE KIT AS PER THE TIME AND ACTIVITIES GIVEN. ALSO KEEP IN MIND THE WEATHER, THE ROUTE ETC. DON’T FORGET TO TAKE A COMPASS, NOTE-BOOK AND PENCIL, MAP, CORD, FIRST AID KIT, UTENSILS, FOOD MATERIAL ETC……
ADOPT FOR THE PURPOSE OF KEEPING CLEAN A PARK OR A WTER POINT OR A BUS STOP OR ANY PUBLIC SPOT IN ORDER THAT OUR VILLAGE, TOWN OR CITY REMAINS FREE FROM POLLUTION, WE HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE A LITTLE. LET US REMOVE A LITTLE DIRT FROM THE PUBLIC PLACES. WE HAVE TO ADOPT A NEARBY PARK, BUS STAND, WATER POINT, PUBLIC LIBRARY OR ANY SUCH PLACE. GO THERE IN UNIFORM AT SOME FIXED TIME WITH NECESSARY EQUIPMENTS, TOOLS

&

CLEAN THE SURROUNDINGS.

YOU MAY GO THERE IN SMALL GROUPS- BY PATROL. DO SOME PETTY REPAIR WORK, IF NECESSARY. PUT A BANNER OR A BOARD OR WRITE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PUBLIC TO KEEP THE PLACE CLEAN OR IN ORDER. EDUCATE PEOPLE FOR THE HABIT OF CLEANLINESS, IMPORTANCE OF TREES AND GREENARIES, VALUE OF ORDERS AND DISCIPLINE IN EVERYDAY LIFE ADOPT FOR PURPOSE OF KEEPING CLEAN A TEMPLE PLACE

– NOT TO WASTE WATER……

– TEMPLE OF LORD SHIVA AT KALUCHAK PURPOSE – CLEANLINESS AND MAINTENANCE WORK – THE WHOLE OF MY PATROL ALONG WITH MY SCOUT MASTER WENT & TOLD THE PRIEST THAT WE HAD COME ON A VOLUNTARILY BASIS. THE PATROL OF 8 CHILDREN TOOK SOME BROOMS & CLEANED THE WHOLE COMPOUND, AFTER WHICH WE CLEANED THE STATUE OF LORD SHIVA. WE CONTINUED THIS FOR A WEEK AND DISTRIBUTED ‘PRASAD’ TO PEOPLE. ON THE LAST DAY, AFTER CLEANING THE TEMPLE WE PARTICIPATED IN ‘HAVAN’ WHICH WAS BEING ORGANISED THERE. THIS GAVE ME IMMENSE PLEASURE AS IT IS THE PROMISE OF A SCOUT ‘TO DO MY DUTY TO GOD & MY COUNTRY’ I AM ALSO SURE THAT I HAVE SUCCEEDED IN MY TASK….

CAMPING IN A NATURAL ATMOSPHERE IS VERY ESSENTIAL IN SCOUTING. IN A CAMP VARIOUS WORKS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT EG MAINTAIN CLEANLINESS, TO LEVEL THE GROUND, TO DIG PITS, TO CHOP WOOD ETC. SCOUTS AND GUIDES SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE SOME TOOLS CAREFULLY AND CORRECTLY. THEY

& USE THOSE TOOLS IN CAMPS. CROW-BARS, SPADE, SHOWEL, A HAND-SAW, A HANDAXE ETC. PEGS, KNIVES, SCISSORS ETC ARE ALSO USED AT DIFFERENT PLACES & TIMES. KEEP THEM CLEAN & AT SAFE PLACES. TOOLS ARE OUR FRIENDS, LOOK AFTER THEM SO THEY WOULD BE USEFUL AT ANY TIME.
SHOULD KNOW FIRE: DEMONSTRATE ANY

3 OF THE FOLLOWING 1). LAY & LIGHT WOOD FIRE• ASK FROM THE OWNER IF IT IS OUTSIDE. • REMOVE THE TURF FROM AREA LONGER THAN FIRE AREA. • IF GROUND IS WET, COVER IT WITH SAND, DUST OR STONES. • MAKE A PYRAMID OF DRY STICKS LEAVING AN AIR PASSAGE. • PUT FEW BRIKS ON EITHER SIDE. • LET THE MATCH STICK BURN FULLY BEFORE YOU TAKE IT TO THE FIREWOOD. • ADD BIGGER STICKS & WOOD AFTER THE TINY STICKS GIVE PROPER FLAMES. 2). SAFETY PRECAUTIONS – REMEMBER: 3 THINGS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR FIRE
16

A) COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL

B) HEAT

C) AIR (OXYGEN)

IF YOU TAKE ANY ONE OF THEM AWAY THERE WOULD BE NO FIRE……..

▪ NEVER LEAVE THE FIRE AFTER THE WORK IS OVER. ▪ SPRINKLE WATER ON BURNING WOOD & EXTINGUISH FIRE COMPLETELY. ▪ REMOVE THE ASHES & ALL TRACES OF FIRE. ▪ NEVER LIT FIRE NEAR YOUR TENT OR HAY. 3). BUCKET CHAIN METHOD – ► MAKE 2 ROWS OF SCOUTS & GUIDES FACING EACH OTHER. ► ONE ROW WILL SEND BUCKETS FULL OF WATER TOWARDS THE END WHERE FIRE IS. THE OTHER ROW WILL CARRY BACK THE EMPTY BUCKETS FOR FILLING AGAIN. ► THE BUCKET SHOULD MOVE FROM HAND TO HAND AT A CONSTANT SPEED. THE WATER SHOULD NOT SPILL. ► WATER SHOULD BE THROWN AT THE FIRE CONTINOUSLY. ► INTERCHANGE THE WORK OF ROWS TO GIVE A REST. 4). TO TACKLE DRY GRASS FIRE – ◘ TAKE AWAY DRY GRASS FROM ALL SIDES. ◘ SPREAD THE BURNING GRASS BY HITTING WITH A STICK. ◘ SPRINKLE WATER OVER THE FIRE. 5). GAS LEAKAGE – L.P.G USED IN KITCHEN HAS A PECULIAR SMELL. IF SUCH SMELL IS THERE, TAKE THE FOLLOWING STEPS –  ‘OFF’ THE MAIN SWITCH OF THE CYLINDER.  DON’T BRING ANY FLAME OR BURNING STICK NEAR IT.  DON’T SWITCH ‘ON’ OR ‘OFF’ ANY ELECTRIC APPLIANCE AS THERE IS A SPARK.  OPEN DOORS & WINDOWS SO THAT GAS WILL BE WEAKENED.  IF STILL LEAKAGE CONTINUES CALL THE DISTRIBUTOR AND FIRE-BRIGADE……
PIONEERING

1). TIMBER HITCH- IT IS USED FOR TYING A BUNDLE OF STICKS, TO DRAG A LOG, TO START THE DIAGONAL LASHING. 2). ROLLING HITCH- USEFUL FOR ATTACHING A ROPE TO ANOTHER WHICH HAS A STRAIN ON IT. IT CAN ALSO TAKE STRAIN AT RIGHT-ANGLES FROM A SPAR. IT IS MORE SECURE THAN A CLOVE HITCH. 3). ROUND TURN AND TWO HALF HITCHES- USED FOR FASTENING A ROPE BY ITS END TO A POST SPAR OR RING. TO TIE A TENT WITH PEGS, TO HANG A SWING.
