SEKOLAH MENENGAH KEBANGSAAN KEPONG BARU, KUALA LUMPUR.

STPM TRIAL EXAMINATION 2008

Instructions to candidates: Answer all questions. Answers may be written in either English or Malay. All necessary working should be shown clearly. Non-exact numerical answers may be given correct to three significant figures, or one decimal place in the case of angles in degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question. Mathematical tables and a list of mathematical formulae are provided.

This question paper consists of 4 printed pages.

The population of an island at time t is p. The number of births per unit time is b and the number of deaths per unit time is proportional to the population at that time. By taking p as a continuous variable, show that dp ! b kp , dt where k is a positive constant.

[2 marks]

Solve the differential equation with the condition that p ! b where t = 0. Express p as 5k a function of t. [5 marks] Find the time when the population of the island is 9b . 10k Sketch the graph of p against t. [2 marks] [2 marks]

The door frames provided by a housing contractor are of a standard height, 1.90 m. The height of men is normally distributed with mean 1.75 m and standard deviation 0.08 m. (a) (b) Find the probability of men who are taller than the door frame. [2 marks] If the contractor wishes to alter the frame height, in such a way that forty nine men out of fifty are not taller than the frame height, find to two decimal places, the new height of the door frame. [3 marks]

The distance, X, in km, travelled by a taxi with one litre of petrol is a continuous random variable with the probability density function f ( x) ! k (12 x x 2 ), 0 e x e 10 . Find the constant value k. [3 marks]

Given that the capacity of the petrol tank of the taxi is 80 litres, find the expected distance travelled by the taxi with a full tank of petrol. [4 marks]

A group of girls at a school is entered for Advanced Level Mathematics modules. Each girl takes only module M1 or only module M2 or both M1 and M2. The probability that a girl is taking M2 given that she is taking M1 is 1 . 5 The probability that a girl is taking M1 given that she is taking M2 is 1 . 3 Find the probability that

Souvenir mugs manufactured by a certain company are packed in boxes of 200, and on average one mug in 100 mugs will be defective. A box which contains 4 or more defective mugs will be rejected. Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that a given box will be rejected. [5 marks] A delivery van can carry 16 such boxes. The number of boxes, out of 16, that will be rejected, is denoted by Y; determine the probability (Y e 2) . Find the expected number of rejected boxes per delivery. [6 marks]
