The Testimony of Jesus the ChristPre-existence of Christ
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life wasthe light of men. And the light shineth in darness; and the darness !omprehended it not. "orasmu!h as many ha#e taen in hand to set forth in order a de!laration of those things whi!h are most surely  belie#ed among us, $#en as they deli#ered them unto us, whi!h from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, ha#ing had perfe!t understanding of all things from the #ery first, to write unto thee in order, most e%!ellent Theophilus, That thou mightest now the !ertainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instru!ted.
Genealogy of Jesus through Joseph
The boo of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of &a#id, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaa!; and Isaa! begat Ja!ob; and Ja!ob begat Judas and his brethren; And Judas begat 'hares and (ara of Thamar; and 'hares begat $srom; and $srom begat Aram; And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat )aasson; and )aasson begat Salmon; And Salmon begat *oo+ of a!hab; and *oo+  begat -bed of uth; and -bed begat Jesse; And Jesse begat &a#id the ing; and &a#id the ing begat Solomon of her
that had been the wife
of rias; And Solomon begat oboam; and oboam begat Abia;and Abia begat Asa; And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat -+ias; And -+ias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat A!ha+; and A!ha+ begat $+eias; And $+eias begat /anasses; and /anasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; And Josias begat Je!honias and his  brethren, about the time they were !arried away to *abylon0 And after they were brought to *abylon, Je!honias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat (orobabel; And (orobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat $liaim; and $liaim begat A+or; And A+or begat Sado!; and Sado! begat A!him; and A!him begat $liud; And $liud begat $lea+ar; and $lea+ar begat /atthan; and /atthan begat Ja!ob; And Ja!ob begat Joseph the husband of /ary, of whom was born Jesus, who is !alled Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to &a#id
are
fourteen generations; and from &a#id until the !arrying away into *abylon
are
fourteen generations; and from the !arrying away into *abylon unto Christ
are
 fourteen generations.
Gabriel announces John's birth
There was in the days of 1erod, the ing of Judaea, a !ertain priest named (a!harias, of the !ourse of Abia0 and his wife
was
of the daughters of Aaron, and her name
was
$lisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, waling in all the !ommandments and ordinan!es of the 2ord blameless. And they had no !hild, be!ause that $lisabeth was barren, and they both were
now
well stri!en in years. And it !ame to pass, that while he e%e!uted the priest3s offi!e before God in theorder of his !ourse, A!!ording to the !ustom of the priest3s offi!e, his lot was to burn in!ense whenhe went into the temple of the 2ord. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of in!ense. And there appeared unto him an angel of the 2ord standing on the right side of the altar of in!ense. And when (a!harias saw
him
, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. *ut the angel said unto him, "ear not, (a!harias0 for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife $lisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt !all his name John. And thou shalt ha#e 4oy and gladness; and many shall re4oi!e at his birth. "or he shall be great in the sight of the 2ord, and shall drin neither wine nor strong drin; and he shall be filled with the 1oly Ghost, e#en from his mother3s womb. And many of the !hildren of Israel shall he turn to the 2ord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and  power of $lias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the !hildren, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the

4ust; to mae ready a people prepared for the 2ord. And (a!harias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I now this5 for I am an old man, and my wife well stri!en in years. And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presen!e of God; and am sent to spea unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to spea, until the day that thesethings shall be performed, be!ause thou belie#est not my words, whi!h shall be fulfilled in their season. And the people waited for (a!harias, and mar#elled that he tarried so long in the temple. And when he !ame out, he !ould not spea unto them0 and they per!ei#ed that he had seen a #ision in the temple0 for he be!oned unto them, and remained spee!hless. And it !ame to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were a!!omplished, he departed to his own house. And after those days his wife $lisabeth !on!ei#ed, and hid herself fi#e months, saying, Thus hath the 2ord dealt with me in the days wherein he looed on
me
, to tae away my reproa!h among men.
Gabriel visits Mary
And in the si%th month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a !ity of Galilee, named )a+areth, To a #irgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of &a#id; and the #irgin3s name
was
/ary. And the angel !ame in unto her, and said, 1ail,
thou that art
 highly fa#oured, the 2ord
is
 with thee0 blessed
art
thou among women. And when she saw
him
, she was troubled at his saying, and !ast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, "ear not, /ary0 for thou hast found fa#our with God. And, behold, thou shalt !on!ei#e in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt !all his name J$SS. 1e shall be great, and shall be !alled the Son of the 1ighest0 and the 2ord God shall gi#e unto him the throne of his father &a#id0 And he shall reign o#er the house of Ja!ob for e#er; and of his ingdom there shall be no end. Then said /ary unto the angel, 1ow shall this be, seeing I now not a man5 And the angel answered and said unto her, The 1oly Ghost shall !ome upon thee, and the power of the 1ighest shall o#ershadow thee0 therefore also that holy thing whi!h shall be born of thee shall be !alled the Son of God. And, behold, thy !ousin $lisabeth, she hath also !on!ei#ed a son in her old age0 and this is the si%th month with her, who was !alled barren. "or with God nothing shall be impossible. And /ary said, *ehold the handmaid of the 2ord; be it unto me a!!ording to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Mary visits Elizabeth John's mother
And /ary arose in those days, and went into the hill !ountry with haste, into a !ity of Juda; And entered into the house of (a!harias, and saluted $lisabeth. And it !ame to pass, that, when $lisabeth heard the salutation of /ary, the babe leaped in her womb; and $lisabeth was filled with the 1oly Ghost0 And she spae out with a loud #oi!e, and said, *lessed
art
 thou among women, and blessed
is
the fruit of thy womb. And when!e
is
this to me, that the mother of my 2ord should !ome to me5 "or, lo, as soon as the #oi!e of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for 4oy. And blessed
is
she that belie#ed0 for there shall be a performan!e of those things whi!h were told her from the 2ord. And /ary said, /y soul doth magnify the 2ord, And my spirit hath re4oi!ed in God mySa#iour. "or he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden0 for, behold, from hen!eforth all generations shall !all me blessed. "or he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy
is
 his name. And his mer!y
is
on them that fear him from generation to generation. 1e hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath s!attered the proud in the imagination oftheir hearts. 1e hath put down the mighty from
their
seats, and e%alted them of low degree. 1e hath filled the hungry with good things; and the ri!h he hath sent empty away. 1e hath holpen his ser#ant Israel, in remembran!e of
his
mer!y; As he spae to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for e#er. And /ary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
!irth of John the !aptist

)ow $lisabeth3s full time !ame that she should be deli#ered; and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and her !ousins heard how the 2ord had shewed great mer!y upon her; and they re4oi!ed with her. And it !ame to pass, that on the eighth day they !ame to !ir!um!ise the !hild; and they!alled him (a!harias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, )ot
 so
; but he shall be !alled John. And they said unto her, There is none of thy indred that is !alled by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would ha#e him !alled. And he ased for a writing table, andwrote, saying, 1is name is John. And they mar#elled all. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue
loosed
, and he spae, and praised God. And fear !ame on all that dwelt round about them0 and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill !ountry of Judaea. And all they that heard
them
 laid
them
up in their hearts, saying, What manner of !hild shall this be6 And the hand of the 2ord was with him. And his father (a!harias was filled with the 1oly Ghost, and prophesied, saying, *lessed
be
the 2ord God of Israel; for he hath #isited and redeemed his people, And hath raised up an horn of sal#ation for us in the house of his ser#ant &a#id; As he spae by the mouth of his holy  prophets, whi!h ha#e been sin!e the world began0 That we should be sa#ed from our enemies, and fromthe hand of all that hate us; To perform the mer!y
 promised
to our fathers, and to remember his holy !o#enant; The oath whi!h he sware to our father Abraham, That he would grant unto us, that we being deli#ered out of the hand of our enemies might ser#e him without fear, In holiness and righteousness  before him, all the days of our life. And thou, !hild, shalt be !alled the prophet of the 1ighest0 for thou shalt go before the fa!e of the 2ord to prepare his ways; To gi#e nowledge of sal#ation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mer!y of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath #isited us, To gi#e light to them that sit in darness and
in
the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of pea!e. And the !hild grew, and wa%ed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till theday of his shewing unto Israel.
"ngel visits Joseph in a #ream
)ow the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise0 When as his mother /ary was espoused to Joseph,  before they !ame together, she was found with !hild of the 1oly Ghost. Then Joseph her husband,  being a 4ust
man
, and not willing to mae her a publi! e%ample, was minded to put her away pri#ily. *ut while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the 2ord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of &a#id, fear not to tae unto thee /ary thy wife0 for that whi!h is !on!ei#edin her is of the 1oly Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt !all his name J$SS0 for he shall sa#e his people from their sins. )ow all this was done, that it might be fulfilled whi!h was spoenof the 2ord by the prophet, saying, *ehold, a #irgin shall be with !hild, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall !all his name $mmanuel, whi!h being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the 2ord had bidden him, and too unto him his wife0 And new her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son0 and he !alled his name J$SS.
!irth of Jesus in !ethlehem
And it !ame to pass in those days, that there went out a de!ree from Caesar Augustus, that all the worldshould be ta%ed. 7
 And
this ta%ing was first made when Cyrenius was go#ernor of Syria.8 And all went to be ta%ed, e#ery one into his own !ity. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the !ity of  )a+areth, into Judaea, unto the !ity of &a#id, whi!h is !alled *ethlehem; 7be!ause he was of the house and lineage of &a#id08 To be ta%ed with /ary his espoused wife, being great with !hild. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were a!!omplished that she should be deli#ered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling !lothes, and laid him in a manger; be!ause there was no room for them in the inn.
