TOTAL POPULATION:

an increase of 11,180 during the past year.

♦ Calgary’s population grew from 922,315 in April 2003 to 933,495 in April 2004. This represents an increase of 1.21%. ♦ Nine communities had a population increase of more than 1,000 persons. The communities are Coventry Hills (1,043), Evergreen (1,419), McKenzie Towne (1,573), Panorama Hills (1,575), Royal Oak (1,594), Saddle Ridge (1,106), Taradale (2,101), Tuscany (1,720) & West Springs (1,342). ♦ Five communities grew more than 100%. The communities are Copperfield (196.92%), Country Hills Village (104.39%), Evanston (1,351.06%) New Brighton (186.87%) & Symons Valley (602.25%). NATURAL INCREASE:

increased slightly from 2003 and continues to be a major source of population growth.

♦ Natural increase is a result of the excess of births over deaths. The natural increase during 2003 – 2004 was 8,927 persons, up 564 over the previous period 2002 – 2003. 3. NET MIGRATION: an increase of 2,253 persons over the past 12 months.

♦ Net migration is the difference between the number of persons moving into Calgary and the number moving away. ♦ Over the past 12 months, 2,253 more people moved into Calgary than moved away. This amount of net in-migration to the city is a decrease of 6,712 from 2003. 4. HOUSING: housing stock and the vacancy rate continue to rise slightly.

♦ (both existing and under construction) is now 383,701 dwellings. This is an increase of 11,945 over April 2003. ♦ The number of vacant dwelling units in Calgary increased from 11,004 in 2003 to 16,261 in 2004. The overall vacancy rate in the city is 4.33%, up from 3.03% in April 2003. ♦ There are now 358,972 occupied dwellings. Of this number, 255,490 or 71.17% are owner-occupied. In 2003, the comparable percentage was 70.45%. 5. CONCLUSION: ♦ Calgary has experienced a minimal population growth over the last year; however, the economy continues to grow.
