O5.1

To recognise which category different objects belong to and why.

Vocabulary

Classroom/household objects, animals, foods …; negatives

Resources

•Variety of objects, pictures, etc.

147

PRACTISING SPECIFIC VOCABULARY AREAS: SIZE AND SHAPE

A sorting game.

What to do

•Arrange objects or pictures on a table, or in the centre of a circle of
children, where they can easily be seen. Ensure at least one does
not fit into the category of the others (e.g. have a selection of plas-
tic fruit and one pen).
•Ask the children to decide which is the ‘odd one out’ and tell you
why in TL. Encourage them to use negative phrases: ‘Because it’s
not a … (food, animal)’.
•Ask children to take turns to rearrange the objects/pictures, leaving
an ‘odd one out’ each time, and ask their classmates which one is
‘odd’ and why.
