Dear Parent/Guardian,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that on Tuesday May 23rd and Wednesday May 24th,
your son or daughters Health Education class will begin the human growth and development
chapter. This chapter will explain the many changes that occur during puberty and adolescence.
On these two designated days, however, we will specifically focus on human reproduction and
sexually transmitted diseases. Our plan is to divide students by gender for these presentations. I
will lead the sessions with the female students and Mark Bond, current boys physical education
teacher and coach, will lead the sessions with the males. This process was developed with
parent, teacher, and administrator collaboration through our district School Health Advisory
Council (SHAC)

Attached please find the information we will discuss for the two dates noted above. Please feel
free to contact me via email for any questions, comments or concerns.

Please complete the bottom portion of this letter providing accepting or declining by Monday,
May 22nd. Of course, declining will not result in any disciplinary, academic, or other sanctions
for your child. As always, thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Nicole Wogstad

Chapter 9 Growth and Development

What is the function of the male reproductive system?

- Makes and stores sperm
What is the function of the female reproductive system?
- Makes and stores eggs and carries out pregnancies
What are four ways to protect your reproductive health?
1. Bathe everyday
2. Wear clothes that are not too tight.
3. Pay attention to any change in your body and see a doctor if anything concerns you.
4. Avoid sexual activity to prevent STDS.
Sperm-Sex cells made by males
Testes- organ that make sperm and testosterone
Egg- female sex cell
Ovaries-organs that make eggs and the hormones estrogen and progesterone
Uterus- is the organ that holds a fetus during pregnancy.
Menstruation- monthly breakdown and shedding of the lining of the uterus
What is typical menstrual cycle?
1. For the 1st 5 days, the lining of the uterus is shed through menstruation
2. For the first 13 days, the ovum matures in the ovary.
3. The ovum is released into the fallopian tubes on day 14, and then travels toward the uterus until day 21.
4. If the ovum has not been fertilized by the time it reaches the uterus, it will dissolve by day 28
5. Then menstruation begins and the cycle repeats.

Chapter 10 Lesson 4
Sexually Transmitted Disease
Describe how HIV attacks the immune system.
Like other viruses, HIV invades healthy cells and instructs them to make more HIV.
The cells that HIV attacks are the T cells that are part of the bodys immune system.
Attacking the T cells weakens the bodys ability to fight pathogens that cause other diseases, such as
pneumonia, or to fight cancer.
Identify five common STDS
1. Chlamydia
2. Genital Herpes
3. Genital Warts
4. Gonorrhea
5. Syphilis
STD- is a sexually transmitted disease or a disease that can be spread from person to person during sexual contact.
How can you avoid getting STDs?
Abstinence from sexual activity eliminates the danger of becoming infected with an STD because you do
not take part in sexual activity at all. People can also avoid getting STDs by not using alcohol or drugs and
by not sharing needles.
AIDS-is a deadly disease, caused by HIV that attacks and weakens the bodys immune system.
Abstinence- is refusing to take part in any activity or behavior that puts your health and the health of other people at
risk.
How can two people show affection for each other and still practice abstinence?
Being a good listener
Giving hugs
Going for walks
Holding hands
Doing nice things for each other
