Spelling Survey Results Thank you for your participation!
First we would like to thank everyone that participated in the spelling survey we circulated last week. Nearly 200 people completed the survey, producing a very good sample. The 9 question survey was the beginning of a series of surveys that AVKO will be conducting to formulate statistical facts to attempt to secure a grant to perform a nationwide spelling study, updating the findings in the 1953 study known as The New Iowa Spelling Scale.

The survey results can be found at this link, http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e29bvzk2fdq7owks/results The survey is available at the following link: http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e29bvzk2fdq7owks/start

It's All In The Attitude A Positive Message for the Day! There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. "Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today?" So she did and she had a wonderful day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. "H-M-M," she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today?" So she did and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. "Well," she said, "today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail." So she did and she had a fun, fun day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head. "YEA!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today!" Attitude is everything. Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

The AVKO Educational Research Foundation founded in 1974 has as its mission the following: 1. To determine what makes the learning of reading and spelling so difficult for some and so easy for others. 2. To determine what it is about our language that good readers learn without being taught that poor readers don't. 3. To determine whether or not that which poor readers don't learn is ever systematically taught and if it isn't, if it can be. 4. To devise techniques and materials to enable teachers (or parents) to systematically teach poor readers and/or poor spellers that which schools presently are not teaching. 5. To widely disseminate its discoveries of techniques and materials that enable dyslexics to learn to read and to spell. The AVKO Educational Research Foundation has achieved the first four points of its mission. It would like to go out of existence IF AND ONLY IF AVKO can find another non-profit organization that can and will achieve its 5th mission point: "to widely disseminate AVKO's techniques and materials." AVKO is looking for a university that would like to be the beneficiary of AVKO's assets when AVKO goes out of existence in ten or fifteen years from now. AVKO is also looking for venture capitalists to form a profit making publishing firm that would feature the AVKO line.

This year on the July18-25 Cruise to Alaska, Don McCabe, Research Director of the AVKO Foundation, will be presenting AVKO demonstration workshops on HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILDREN BECOME BETTER SPELLERS AND READERS.
