KNOWLEDGE WORKER

Managing Knowledge means managing oneself.  Knowledge workers don¶t believe they are paid to work 9 to 5; they believe they¶re paid to be effective.  The Accumulated experience, the commitment, and potential for developing and maintaining the learning organization. 

Definition
³A Knowledge worker is anyone who works for a living at the task of developing or using knowledge´.  Individuals who add to a company product and service by applying their knowledge are knowledge worker´. Drucker 2001 

Knowledge worker attributes  

  

Holds unique values and understand and adopts the culture of the organization. Adopts an attitude of collaboration and sharing. Has innovative capacity and creative mind. Is in command of Self learning and self control. Is willing to tolerate uncertainties and grow with the company.

Thinking Skills: Value added contribution to product develp and knowledge workers career.  Continuous learning  Innovative team and teamwork  Innovation and creation.  Risk taking and potential success.  Decisive action taking.  A culture of responsibility towards knowledge. 

Smart leadership requirement  

 



Assessment of core competency of the organization. Response to the organizational shortcoming. Vivid knowledge of the external market and the tricky nature of competition in the market place. Online response to the co. external environment. Measure the return on time.

Technology and knowledge worker
To create problem solving phase IT envt should provide  A knowledge-based retrieval system that generates knowledge and ideas quickly.  Interactive function to derive feasible solution.  Function to communicate a knowledge workers activity to the appropriate people via technology such as e-mail or an internet.

An intelligent workstation should perform the following function Administrative support function: Scheduling meetings, electronic telephone directories. Personal computing function: Spread sheets and business graphics. Intelligent Database: Create and maintain information on ad-hoc basis.

Role of CKO (Chief knowledge officer) 
 



Maximize the return on investment in knowledge- people, process, and technology. Share best practices and reinforce the goodness of knowledge sharing among employees on a regular basis. Promote and improve co innovation and the commercialization of the new ideas Minimize ³Brain drain´ or knowledge loss at all levels of the organization.
