Dear Parents I am adding an online component to my English courses this year. Instead of just the class web page, I¶ve added a social network where students will be expected to participate. Bear English is a social network on a Ning platform devoted to reading, writing ,thinking and collaborating in the digital classroom that is the World Wide Web. Interested in blogging? Interested in building professional relationships? Are students poets or song writers who need places to publish? Bear English is the place to do all that and more. Bear English is a special social network. This is not the space for the everyday Facebook post or ³what¶s happening?´ tweet. This network will showcase students, teachers and interested parents members as readers, writers and learners. With your help Bear English will be a cheering and encouraging, questioning and answering sort of place. To start building your own space on Bear English, join now! Parents, we would love to have you join. You may post what reading has done for your life or write about the kinds of reading and writing you have to do on the job. Maybe you¶re even a poet, short story writer or novelist yourself. We encourage you to join our community and connect with your students and their teachers. The Ning is semi-private. Nonmembers can only see/access the front page of the ning. I have long wanted students to have the ability or access to blogging tools from school. This year, OCPS opened up Ning and I decided to build a social network instead of a collection of class blogs. Why? Social networks on a Ning platform allow for richer collaboration. Here you can blog, jot text notes, add widgets to your space/page on the ning, upload photos, videos, respond to forum discussions, participate in groups and friend, comment, tag and connect away. While blogs offer some of those options, they do not offer the ease of connectivity that a ning provides. All members of the Ning, are required to follow Orange County Public Schools¶ Internet Policy as well as the Ning Rules that are available on a tab at the top of the main page in the ning. Not following such policies will result in removal of Ning privileges as well as disciplinary action. I'm invested in the ning. Cypress Creek English and reading teachers have invested in the ning and I hope you will choose to invest in it with us. Here's to a great school year!
