The Iron Rules of Gunfighting

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. If at all possible, don’t. Don’t bring a knife to a gunfight unless the other guy is out of bullets. Guns don’t kill people, bullets kill people…. When it’s time to shoot, shoot. Don’t talk. (Tuco’s Rule) You can do everything right, but if you shoot the Senator’s boyfriend, you’ll wind up as dead as Vince Foster. Always check your gun at the saloon door. (It’s none of their business about the spare you have hid out under your jacket….) The .45 pistol, revolver or autoloader, was designed to put down a cavalry horse. Horse weighs 800 pounds or so. The .38 pistol, or 9mm, was designed to intimidate an enemy sailor, about 140 pounds or so. The .45 does the job, and the 9mm doesn’t. Which one are you going to carry? In a society where the criminals have guns and the rest of the folks don’t, crime runs rampant. In a society where the people have guns, criminals, especially legislators, run scared. If you hit what you aim at, you don’t need a fifteen round magazine.

10. Generally, in a fracas, taking a third of the opposing force out will lead the others to have an attack of good sense, and a choice of discretion over valor. If that is three muggers, you only have to down one of them. 11. Watch his hands, then watch your front sight. Don’t stop shooting until he hits the pavement. 12. Close combat begins at 400 meters, and it doesn’t matter if he’s facing north or south…. (Eatman’s Axiom) 13. The pistol saves your life. The rifle saves your freedom. The shotgun keeps you fed. 14. In these latter days of the Republic, everybody is fascinated by the .223 cartridge and the Stoner replacement for the M.1 Carbine that was foisted on us by Robert Strange MacNamara. Very few folks are paying much attention to the Scout rifle, of Jeff Cooper’s design. On the whole, that suits me well indeed…. 15. The only reason for carrying a pistol is that a rifle or a shotgun is so much of an encumberance when you stick it through your belt…. (One of the deputies….)
