All proceeds from the event will benefit local Special Olympians. Athletes from Ferris State University also will participate in the event. One FSU athlete and one local Special Olympian will play on each five-person team. Those who attend also can participate in 50/50 and prize raffles. For more information, contact Tim Leggett at The Gate at (231) 796-3808.

BOWLING FUNDRAISER FOR SPECIAL OLYMPIC ATHLETES ON SATURDAY

(NewsUSA) - If you find that your sniffling, sneezing and runny eyes are accompanied by mouth odor, you’re not alone; seasonal allergies are associated with halitosis, or bad breath. Bad breath is caused by the same destructive bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease. They live in the mouth, where they feed on carbohydrates consumed as food. In a healthy mouth, these bacteria are kept in check by saliva production. Saliva washes away the bacteria, so they have less time to stick to teeth, eat sugar and emit smelly gas as a byproduct. Allergies, however, can lead to dry mouth. Without saliva to flush out the mouth, the bad bacteria stick around. To make things worse, many allergy medications list “dry mouth” as a side effect. Post-nasal drip, which may also result from allergies, can also cause bad breath. As mucus from the sinus cavities moves down the back of the throat, it provides a food source for bacteria. Postnasal drip can also become infected, in which case it puts more bacteria in your mouth. But those with allergies aren’t condemned to a life of smelly breath. Allergy sufferers can take steps to control allergy-related bad breath. For example, if a medication creates dry mouth, patients can ask their doctors about other drugs that will treat their symptoms without causing the same side effects. Addressing the sinus issues that lead to post-nasal drip can also help eliminate bad breath. Drinking tea is thought to alleviate post-nasal drip. Nasal rinsing, whether through a neti pot or another device, can also help. Some oral care products directly address the bad bacteria that cause mouth odor. For example, oral care probiotic mints, such as EvoraPlus (www.myevoraplus. com), flood the mouth with good bacteria. The good bacteria adhere to tooth surfaces, leaving less room for bad bacteria to grow. If bad bacteria can’t find space to live on teeth, they can’t

survive in large enough numbers to create bad breath. In fact, these mints have beneficial bacteria so small they can easily reach into the pits, crevices and fissures of teeth for deeper penetration.

electricity. * Well being -- optimum humidity levels can help reduce the chance of upper-respiratory problems caused by dry air. Ask your doctor. * Preservation -- proper humidification levels will protect against shrinkage and cracking in furniture, moldings and hardwood floors. * Energy savings -- adding moisture to the air means you’ll feel warmer with lower, energysaving indoor temperatures. A home heated to 69 degree with 35 percent humidity feels just as warm as a 72 degree home at 19 percent humidity. Visit www.aprilaire.com for more information.

TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR FURNACE READY FOR WINTER
(NewsUSA) - Frigid days are fast approaching. And as snow falls and temperatures plummet, it is important to make sure your furnace is in proper working condition. Follow these tips to make sure you don’t get left in the cold this winter. 1. Have your heating equipment properly maintained and cleaned by a licensed heating and cooling contractor. 2. Have the duct work checked for air leaks. Research shows that faulty ductwork accounts for more than 25 percent of the heating loss in an average home. 3. Replace air filters. A dirty filter restricts air flow and causes the unit to lose efficiency. 4. Use a programmable thermostat. By setting your thermostat from 72 degrees to 65 degrees for eight hours a day (for instance, while no one is home or while everyone is sleeping) you can cut your heating bill by up to 10 percent according to the Department of Energy. 5. Keep air supply and return registers free from obstructions (for example, furniture, rugs, and clothes baskets). 6. Use a whole-home humidifier. Heated indoor air is very dry and needs to be humidified. Actually, one of the driest places on earth could be your home. Don’t believe it? The relative humidity of the Sahara Desert is 25 percent; Death Valley’s 23 percent. In the winter months, the average heated home can have a relative humidity as low as 13 to 16 percent. The benefits of using an Aprilaire automatic wholehome humidifier include: * Comfort -- helps eliminate dry nose and throat and itchy skin, while also reducing static

MUSKEGON COUNTY – Ellie Koon wants to set the record straight about the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to chemically kill sea lamprey larvae in two tributaries of the Muskegon River. The lampricides being used will only affect Brooks Creek in Newaygo County and Cedar Creek in Muskegon County – two “feeder streams” that are a part of the Muskegon River system, said Koon, a fish biologist in charge of the project. The Muskegon River itself will remain unaffected, she added. The lampricide treatment will begin on Saturday in Brooks Creek and on Tuesday in Cedar Creek. “We’re using a very selective lampricide at a very low concentration that is harmless to mammals and most other aquatic life,” Koon said. The Croton Dam blocks lampreys – an invasive species in the Muskegon River – from traveling north of Newaygo, meaning they don’t appear in Mecosta County, she said. Sea lamprey larvae live in the mud in certain Great Lakes tributaries and grow into adult fish parasites, about 18 inches in length, that suck onto and feed off fish. A single lamprey can kill 40 pounds of fish within its 18-month lifespan as a parasitic adult.

LAMPREY TREATMENTS WON’T AFFECT MUSKEGON RIVER

(NewsUSA) - Nearly everyone is more cautious with money these days, so major purchases are approached with additional consideration and planning. A new refrigerator, for example, can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars and may be in your home for 10 or more years. So when it is necessary to replace, budget-focused consumers may first consider the purchase price. However, a refrigerator’s reliability, energy efficiency, usable features and ability to store more-affordable bulk foods are also important factors and can offset the initial cost. Since consumers are in the market for appliances so infrequently, the purchase process can easily become confusing and overwhelming. The tips and guidelines below will help even the most discerning and energy-minded shoppers navigate the showroom floor and identify a reliable refrigerator that will meet their needs. Compare the capacity and storage. Models with more shelves and bins have a greater surface area, which creates more space for fresh and frozen food deals bought in bulk. Consider a model that will not only fit everything, but will also provide easy access to the most-used items. The Maytag® ICE2O® refrigerator has a bottom mount

cooler. Filtered ice and water dispensers can help save money and the environment by preventing the disposal of plastic water bottles. Some of the newest refrigerators also have ice makers that produce smaller cubes that fit into refillable water bottles. Examine the hardware. How durable the handles are and how strong the hinges are will directly impact the life of the refrigerator. Open and close the door and drawers to test their strength, and look for heavy-duty stainless steel handles that will remain secure even in the most active households.

hours, it has to return to the gate. On the upside, there are ways to cope with the unexpected. Here are a few simple tips to prepare for delays before leaving home: * Print copies of itineraries with the 800 numbers for your airline, and others that fly the same route, just in case you have to rebook from the airport. The paper-free option? E-mail those numbers or enter them manually into your smartphone. * Check airline Web sites for delay postings. New rules mandate that airlines have this information online. Alternatively, you can go to www.flightstats. com. * Make sure you can access your office and home computers in the event you are stuck while traveling. Free and inexpensive programs like LogMeIn (www. LogMeIn.com) make it quick, easy and secure to access files, calendars and applications from any computer, smartphone, netbook or iPad with an Internet connection.

* Enlist a friend or family member who knows their way around online travel sites, and keep them on your mobile phone speed dial. If you have to make alternative plans, they can probably do it faster than anyone. * Remember travel insurance. A few extra dollars tacked onto the price of your trip can provide peace of mind if you have to change plans for unforeseen reasons. Check what your airline, travel agent, booking site and credit cards offer to make sure that you’re covered. * Have fun. Many airports are adding luxuries like spas, high-end restaurants and even showers to keep passengers happy. Find out what your airport, and the ones that you will visit, offer before you go, so you’re able to enjoy them to the fullest. While there is no surefire guarantee for disruption-free air travel, a little advanced planning can go a long way -- even all the way to your destination.

Look for the ENERGY STAR® label. The refrigerator consumes more energy than any other kitchen appliance. According to ENERGY STAR®, replacing a model from the 1980s with an ENERGY STAR-qualified model will offer a savings of $100 per year on utility bills, or $200 per year if the model is from the 1970s. Features such as a door alarm, power outage indicator, airtight door seals and easy-touse temperature controls will help maintain a constant temperature and contribute to the efficiency rating.

Consider the usability of the features. Add-on features can save time and money if they eliminate a cost or save a step. A removable ice bucket can be easily brought to the table or

(NewsUSA) - Man-made and natural disruptions to air travel are all-too-often the norm. Not only can weather delay take-offs and landings, but new airline rules can also keep planes grounded.

FSU CROSS COUNTRY TO SUPPORT BULLDOG ALUM
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men’s and women’s cross country teams will help support one of their own in an important cause later this month. The Bulldog teams will hit the road and participate in a Benefit 5K Run/Walk on Aug. 28 in Scottville (Mich.) in honor of former Bulldog women’s cross country/track and field standout Leanna (Wolf) Geers, who has been diagnosed with cancer and is presently undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatment. The event will be held starting at 11 a.m. (ET) at Riverside Park in Scottville with a spaghetti lunch to follow at Mason County Central High School. There will be no entry fee for either the race or the dinner, however, donations will be accepted and all proceeds will go to Leanna and her husband, Eric, to help offset the costs of treatment. Every participant will also receive a wrist band and water bottle. Leanna and her husband recently welcomed the birth of their first daughter, Ava, in February of 2010.
