Background

We have conducted this research due to our course requirement and as well as for having
practical experience to be capable of conducting research in corporate world. To have a complete
insight/understanding of the problem we have held meetings with industry experts to get insight
of the best energy conservation lighting instruments.

Problem Definition:

“Effectiveness of energy savers over traditional tube lights”

Objectives of Research:

• What is the ratio of consumers use traditional tube lights and energy savers?

• If ratio is favorable to energy savers then why people purchase energy savers?

• If ration is not favorable to energy savers, why people don’t use energy savers?

• What is the most effective mean of lighting within the consumer budget?

• Awareness of Cost and benefit relationship of lighting medium?

Literature Review:

The incandescent light bulb, incandescent lamp or incandescent light globe is a source of
electric light that works by incandescence (a general term for heat-driven light emissions, which
includes the simple case of black body radiation). An electric current passes through a
thin filament, heating it to a temperature that produces light. The enclosing glass bulb contains
either a vacuum or an inert gas to prevent oxidation of the hot filament. Incandescent bulbs are
also sometimes called electric lamps, a term also applied to the original arc lamps.

Incandescent bulbs are made in a wide range of sizes and voltages, from 1.5 volts to about 300
volts. They require no external regulating equipment and have a low manufacturing cost, and
work well on either alternating current or direct current. As a result the incandescent lamp is
widely used in household and commercial lighting, for portable lighting such as table lamps,
car headlamps, and flashlights, and for decorative and advertising lighting.

Using energy saving light bulbs offer many advantages and they are more earth friendly as well.
Energy saving bulbs can help you save a substantial amount of money and energy. These bulbs
last up to ten times longer than normal bulbs, which also save you money on purchasing light
bulbs, not to mention ten trips to the store and all the time and hassle involved. Around five
percent of your energy bill is due to the lights in your home, and this percentage may be higher if
you have a large number of lights or a very large home. Energy saving bulbs use around one third
of the power that normal light bulbs do.
Energy saving bulbs will allow you to save money and do your part for the environment. One of
the best things you can do to make your home ecologically friendly is to assess the energy use of
your home and determine ways to reduce this amount. Energy saving bulbs can help you do this
by cutting out a substantial amount of energy needed to light your home. You will see terrific
cost savings with these bills, because your electricity bill will usually go down by about ten
percent. These savings can really add up over the course of a year. If energy saving bulbs lowers
your home electricity costs by just twenty dollars a month, that is a savings of two hundred and
forty dollars a year, a nice chunk of change.
Because energy saving bulbs do not need to be replaced as frequently, they are also more
environmentally friendly because less refuse ends up in the landfills and fewer resources are used
to make bulbs, because energy saving bulbs last between eight and ten times as long as
3

traditional bulbs do. They require less energy to use, and this means less of a demand for
electricity, which may be created using fossil fuels and be a big source of pollution. Replacing a
single bulb in every American home with energy saving bulbs would reduce pollution by the
equivalent of one million cars operating on US roads. This is a lot of pollution, and energy saving
bulbs can help prevent it.

One perceived disadvantage of energy saving bulbs is the cost. These light bulbs may cost three
of four bucks each, while traditional light bulbs may only cost one dollar each, but this is before
replacement costs are factored into the equation. When you compare the average lifespan for
both bulbs, energy saving bulbs will come out far ahead. Traditional light bulbs may need to be
replaced as often a once a month, which is around twelve dollars a year, while energy saving
bulbs usually will only need to be replaced about once a year, for a cost of three or four dollars.
That is still only six to eight dollars a year if you replace energy saving bulbs every six months,
and that is better than twelve dollars a year.

Energy saving bulbs offers many benefits, and they are one way that you can significantly reduce
the energy your home uses. These bulbs are friendly to the environment, they cost less than
traditional bulbs when all the factors are considered, they reduce pollution by reducing the need
for energy, and they last a lot longer, so you do not have to replace them as often. Energy savings
bulbs may cost a little more when you buy them at the store, but the long term savings and
advantages to the earth that these bulbs provide make this cost well worth it. Energy saving bulbs
can also be found online for less, making them an even better deal.

Research Design:

The research we are conducting is quantitative in nature because the reason of conducting this
research is to expand the boundaries of our knowledge.

Nature of Data:

Nature of data gathered will be of both types

• Primary

• Secondary

Sources of Data:

Primary source of data includes end consumers. We will collect secondary data from past
researches made by Govt. of Pakistan and other past researchers.

Sample Size:

We are taking the sample of 30 people for conducting this research.

Data Analysis:

As we are conducting quantitative research so we will do subjective data analysis

Field Work:

It will consist of following activities

• Personal interviews (approaching Retailers)

• Questionnaire (approaching end consumers via questionnaire)

Sampling Frame:
5

We basically have 2 sampling frames for our two tools of data collection.

• For questionnaire we have sampling frame of all end consumers.

• For interview we have sampling frame of all retailers of tube lights and energy savers.

Unit of Analysis:

Our unit of analysis is individual end consumer and individual retailer.

Unit of Observation:

Our unit of observation is individual end consumer and individual retailer.

Tools of Data Collection

Data will be collected via several tools given below

• Personal interviews

• Questionnaires
6

Interviews With industry experts:

For initial insight we conducted interview sessions with industry analysis to have deep
understanding of the issue.

Points extracted from interviews are given below:

• People are now hesitant of purchasing energy savers as compare to their

purchasing trend from last few years. Reasons for this shift in trend are

• Energy saver has low light than tube lights.

• That needs more energy saver in room than tube light. Average light produced by
tube lights needs two energy savers to be equivalent.

Energy consumption comparison:

Energy consumed by tube light:40 watt

Energy consumed by energy saver: 24 watt

Required Energy saver to produce equivalen light=2

Energy consumed by 2 energy savers=24x2=48 watt

• A light of energy savers is not as much soothing to eyes than tube lights.
7

Research analysis(Findings):

By conducting these research we found these facts

• People using energy savers almost use both tube lights as well as energ savers.

• Mostly customers use energy saver not for its affectiveness but for other reasons
as a trend or for decoration purpose.

• Customer dnt percieve energy saver as a proper alternative of tube light they think
we need more energy savers in numbers in order to get light equal to tube light.

• Light of Enrgy saver is not much soothing to eyes and causing eye deseases.

• Customer are not concious about cost and benefit relationship while puchasing
energy saver or tube light.

• Most of the consumer think that energy savers are equal energy consumption so
they use tube lihts as well as energy savers.

• Due to long life of tube light it is still preffered product for customers.
