PHILIPPINE NUTRITION PROGRAM

Goal

Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos

The goal of the 2020 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos is the improvement of the nutritional status, productivity and quality of life of the population, through adoption of desirable dietary practices and healthy lifestyle.

General Objectives 1.To reduce the morbidity and mortality rates due to Avitaminoses and other nutritional deficiencies among the population, particularly among infants and pre schoolers. 2.To reduce PEM among infants and pre schoolers 2.To reduce vitamin A deficiency use among infants and pre schoolers using Bitot s spot as indicators

4. To reduce the prevalence of IDA among pregnant mothers and infants. 5. To identify IDD endemic areas using clinical indicators and classify severity using laboratory indicators 6. To reduce significantly the magnitude and severity of IDD through provision of iodine supplements using goiter grade and laboratory indicators

Policies: I. II. III. IV. Nutritional Surveillance (NS) Food Production Nutrition Education Nutrition Rehabilitation

Nutritional Surveillance (NS) to det m victims of malnutrition A. Anthropometric Measurement study of measurements of human dimensions 1. Age for weight best for use - If weight is not appropriate with the age: a. Stunting: growth retardation b. Wasting: muscle wasting connotes malnutrition 2. Age for Height - If height is not appropriate with the age: Stunting

I.

3. Weight for height
Rule Every height of 5 ft. Every increment of an inch (1 inch) above 5 ft. add Every decrement of an inch (1 inch) below 5ft subtract Male 110 lbs +6 Female 105 lbs +5

-6

-5

Eg. Female: 4 11 at 100 lbs. 5 ft = 105 lbs 1 decrement = - 5

105 - 5 100 lbs. IBW (Ideal body Weight) 100 100 x 100 = 100 % normal

Gomez Table Reference
Percentile 110% & above 9090-109% 7676-89% 6060-75% Below 60% Formula: Description Obesity (a form of malnutrition) Normal 1st degree Needs home diet care 2nd degree malnutrition Needs hospitalization; use TPN 3rd degree malnutrition Needs hospitalization; use TPN Actual Body Weight Ideal Body Weight x 100 = _____ %

Eg. Male: Height 5 11; Actual Body Weight: 154 lbs. 5ft = 110 lbs 176 154 11 x 6 = 66 lbs - 156 176 x 100 = 88% (1st BNL) IBW = 176 lbs 22 lbs underweight

4. Skin Folds Test - pinch the external oblique m. (bilbil) w/ your palm Normal: 1 inch Overweight: > 1 inch 5. Middle Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) - used in children below 5 yrs. Old - measure middle upper arm using tape measure Normal: 13 cm. & above Malnutrition: < 13 cm.

Schedule for receiving Vitamin A supplement to infants, preschoolers and mother:

Protein ² Energy Malnutrition (PEM) - refers to a range of clinical disorder due to deficient of protein or calories or both. These maybe manifested by 2.1 Marasmus ² carbohydrates deficiency (energy giving food) 2.2 Kwashiorkor ² protein deficiency

KWASHIORKOR Etiology (origin) Deficiency Age Major Signs and Symptoms Hair (changes) Dse. experienced by an elder child upon the birth of a new baby CHON Toddlers (1-3 y/o) (1Facial edema With moon face (+) color change fr. Black to brown / fr. Brown to golden yellow (+) Sparse Flag Sign Dermatosis dryness/desquamation/peeling off of skin Irritable High protein

MARASMUS Muscle wasting CHO All ages Muscle wasting Old man s face ( - ) hair changes

TPN (Total Parental Nutrition)/hyperalimentation process/IV infusion w/ CHON, CHO regulated by a machine

II. Food Production
1. Fortification products w/o any nutrient are added w/ nutrients * RA 8172 (Asin Law) - FIDEL Salt (Fortification of iodine Deficiency Elimination) = Iodized salt Patak Asin , Dec 1-5, 2003 * RA 832 (Rice Fortification) - FVR (Fortified Vitamin Rice) - Erap Rice - Gloria Rice

2. Enrichment adding more nutrients to products already w/ nutrients - Canned Goods Written in their labels: - Noodles Enriched w/ Vit. ABCDE - Junk foods w/ DOH Seal Sangkap
