Switchgear Type 8DJ and 8DH for Secondary Distribution Systems up to 24 kV (General Part), SF6-Insulated

Technical Data
Switchgear installation, shipping data
Switchgear installation resistant to internal arc faults, with pressure relief It is possible to install 8DJ secondary distribution switchgear, which are resistant to internal arc faults and feature pressure relief, in e. g. – Compact substations – Substations with control aisles – Switchgear buildings Covers for pressure relief outlets and ducts, expanded metal assemblies etc. do not constitute a part of the switchgear. They must be supplied by the customer. Absorber system (option) for 8DJ10/8DJ20 secondary distribution switchgear and 8DH10 switchgear For the use of maintenance-free and climate-independent switchgear in older substation buildings which do not feature arc-fault testing, the 8DJ20 switchgear can be designed with modified pressure relief systems and absorbers. The pressure absorber system is enclosed and maintenance-free. As a “special cooling system” it reduces , the pressure-dependent and thermal effects of arc faults in the switchgear vessel and the cable connection compartment, and thus protects both people and buildings. Switchgear with pressure absorber system

Mode of operation The switch shaft with the moving contact pieces rotates inside the chamber containing the fixed contact pieces. Compression vanes, which rotate in conjunction with the switch shaft, divide the arcing chamber into two subchambers each of which changes in conjunction with the rotation. During the switching movement, the compression vanes generate a pressure difference between the subchambers. The SF6 gas flows through a nozzle, causes a directional blow-out of the breaking arc and quenches it rapidly. Interlocking is not necessary as the CLOSED and EARTHED functions cannot be implemented simultaneously. Availability of operating mechanisms

Switchgear Type 8DJ and 8DH for Secondary Distribution Systems up to 24 kV (General Part), SF6-Insulated

Design and Mode of Operation

Closing operation During closing operation, the switch shaft with the moveable contact blades moves from the “OPEN” to the “CLOSED” position. The force of the spring-operated mechanism ensures a high closing speed and a reliable connection of the main current path. The good insulating properties of the SF6 gas delay striking of the arc to the arcing tips of the fixed contacts. Opening operation During opening operation, the SF6 gas is compressed in the arcing chamber. The compressed gas, which flows from the nozzles of the moving contact blades, cools down the opening arc between the contacts and safely quenches it in a few milliseconds. The isolating gap created by opening fulfills the conditions applicable to isolating gaps in accordance with VDE 0670 Part 301 and Part 1000, and with IEC 60 265-1 and IEC 60 694. Due to the gas flow into the arcing chamber, which is controlled by the operating movement, both load currents and minor no-load currents are safely interrupted. Earthing “EARTHING” is implemented by moving the operating lever from the “OPEN” to the “EARTHED” position.

Switchgear Type 8DJ and 8DH for Secondary Distribution Systems up to 24 kV (General Part), SF6-Insulated

Design and Mode of Operation
Modules
Manual operating mechanism (detachable lever mechanism) The three-position switchdisconnector is operated via a rocker with metal bellows, which is gas-tight and welded at the switchgear vessel. Spring-operated mechanism The spring-operated mechanism is used for three-position switch-disconnectors in ringmain feeders (as ring-main switches). The switching movements are performed independently of the operating speed. Spring-operated/stored-energy mechanism The spring-operated/storedenergy mechanism is used for three-position switch-disconnectors in transformer feeders (as transformer switches). The switching operations are the same as for the springoperated mechanism. An energy store mechanism is available for tripping with the help of a tripping HV HRC fuse or via the shunt release. No additional charging procedure is required for the energy store mechanism. This energy store mechanism is already charged by the switching operation from the “TRIPPED” position to the “OPEN” position. The precharged energy store mechanism also ensures that the switch-disconnector/ fuse combination can safely switch off all fault types during closing. After tripping, a red bar appears in the switch position indicator. Operation of the operating mechanism

Shunt release (option) Spring-operated/stored-energy mechanisms can be equipped with a shunt release. Remote electrical tripping of the threeposition switch-disconnector is possible via the magnetic coil of the shunt release, e.g. transformer overtemperature tripping. To avoid thermal overloading of the shunt release in the event of a continuous signal that may be applied, the shunt release is switched off via an auxiliary switch which is mechanically coupled with the three-position switch-disconnector. Auxiliary switch (option) Each operating mechanism of the three-position switchdisconnector can be optionally equipped with an auxiliary switch for the switch position indication:

Design and Mode of Operation
Modules
HV HRC fuse assembly Design
• For switch-disconnector

Mode of operation In the event that a HV HRC fuse link has tripped, the switch is tripped via an articulation which is integrated into the cover of the fuse box (see figure). In the event that the fuse tripping fails, e.g. if the fuse has been inserted incorrectly, the fuse box is protected by thermal protection. The overpressure generated by overheating trips the switch via the silicon diaphragm in the cover of the fuse box and via an articulation. This breaks the current before the fuse box incurs irreparable damage. The above thermal protection works independently of the type and design of the HV HRC fuse used. Like the fuse itself it is maintenance-free and independent of any outside climatic effects. Furthermore, the Siemens HV HRC fuses release the striker pin independently of the temperature and trip the switch-disconnector as early as in the fuse overload range. Impermissible heating of the fuse box can be avoided in this way. Replacement of HV HRC fuse links

VDE 0670 Part 303 and IEC 60 420 fulfilled by combination of HV HRC fuses with the three-position switch-disconnector

“1 NO contact” for remote electrical indication Mode of operation For the ready-for-service indicator, a gas-tight measurement box is installed on the inside of the switchgear vessel. A coupling magnet, which is fitted to the bottom end of the measurement box, transmits its position to an outside armature through the stainless steel switchgear vessel. This armature moves the ready-for-service indicator of the switchgear. While changes in the gas density during the loss of gas, which are decisive for the insulating capacity, are displayed, temperature-dependent changes in the gas pressure are not. The gas in the measurement box has the same temperature as that in the switchgear. The temperature effect is compensated via the same pressure change in both gas volumes. Gas monitoring

Insulating capacity for switchgear with HV HRC fuses When HV HRC fuses are used, the conductors are led out of the SF6 insulation through the bushing. For these connections in air, the rated values (rated lightning impulse withstand voltage, rated short-duration power-frequency withstand voltage) of the insulating capacity referred to normal atmospheric conditions (1013 hPa, 20 °C, 11 g/m3 humidity), hence to sea level, are in accordance with VDE 0111 and IEC 60 071. As the altitude increases, the insulating capacity of insulation in air decreases due to the decreasing air density. In accordance with VDE and IEC, this decrease (r correction factor a = 0.9, see adjacent diagram) is permitted up to an site altitude of 1000 m. For site altitudes over 1000 m, the standards do not provide any guidelines for the insulation rating. Instead, special regulations apply to these altitudes.

decreases with increasing altitude but is not taken into account by the standards and specifications up to a site altitude of 1000 m All of the parts housed inside the switchgear vessel which are subjected to high voltage are SF6-insulated against the earthed enclosure. With a gas overpressure of 500 hPa, this insulation permits switchgear installation at any desired altitude above sea level, without the insulating capacity being adversely affected. This also applies to the cable connection when using plug-in sealing ends.

the feeder by means of the three-position switchdisconnector In the event that an internal arc fault occurs at the cable connection, the pressure is released downwards into the cable basement. In the unlikely event of a fault within the switchgear vessel, the energy conversion in the case of an internal arc fault is minor thanks to the SF6 insulation, i.e. approximately only 1/3 compared to air. The escaping gases are discharged downwards. Pressure absorber system (option) for 8DJ10 and 8DJ20 secondary distribution switchgear and 8DH10 switchgear For the use of maintenancefree and climate-independent switchgear in older substation buildings without resistance to internal arc faults, the switchgear can be designed with a modified pressure relief system with absorber. As a “special cooling system” , this maintenance-free pressure absorber system reduces the pressure-dependent and thermal effects of internal arc faults in switchgear vessels and cable connection compartment, and thus protects people and buildings. The enclosed switchgear is suitable for both wall and freestanding installation.
