Work Group: A group which interacts mainly to share information and to make decisions to help each member perform

within his or her area of responsibility Team: A group whose individual efforts result in a performance that is greater than the sum of those individual inputs. Forming: The first stage in group development, characterized by much uncertainty Storming: The second stage in group development, characterized by intra group conflict Norms: Acceptable standards of behavior within a group that are shared by group members Norming: Third stage in the group development, characterized by close relationships and cohesiveness Performing: The fourth stage in the group development, when the group is fully functional Adjourning: The final stage in group development, characterized by concern with wrapping up activities rather than task performance Role: A set of accepted behavior patterns attributed to someone occupying a given position in a social unit Task-Oriented Roles: Task-Oriented roles are performed by team members to ensure that the tasks of the team are accomplished. Maintenance Roles: Maintenance roles re carried out to ensure that the team members maintain good relations Individual Roles: Roles performed by group members that are not productive for keeping the group on task Social Loafing: The tendency for individuals to spend less effort when working collectively than when working individually Trust: A positive expectation that another will not act opportunistically Group Diversity: The heterogeneity of individual characteristics within a group Virtual Teams: Teams that use computer technology to tie together physically dispersed members in order to achieve a common goal
