What’s on your mind?
Teaching and the needs of children are always changing but at Oxford we change with you…
It’s our aim to evolve our resources in order that they stay fresh and relevant for the teachers and pupils of today. When we asked you what was on your mind, here’s what you told us…

Focus on Phonics on
“Getting our children reading in the early years is critical.”
Phonics is one of the most effective ways to teach children to read, but resources have to be relevant for today’s child. We provide teachers with a range of easy-to-use phonics resources that capture children’s imaginations from the start and make them want to read more! Take a look at the exciting new phonics resources in Oxford Reading Tree, Project X and Read Write Inc. and see what works best in your classroom.

Engage the Digital Age
“Children have changed and so have resources.”
There’s no doubt that times have changed. Today’s children love highlyvisual, interactive resources, along with characters and storylines that they can relate to. And that’s just what we give them! Taking the best of what we know works and combining it with the best modern technology can offer, plus some of today’s most popular characters and authors, we are in a perfect position to take children into the future.

Motivate our boys
“Raising our boys’ achievement means improved standards for our school.”
It is well-known that boys are less enthusiastic about reading than girls but given access to the right kind of content, design and structure we believe that they can do just as well as the girls. Project X, for example, has been specially developed to motivate even the most reluctant of boys and raise achievement.

Put it in writing...
“Our children are full of stories but how best to get them down on paper?”
All children have a tale to tell but when it comes to writing, many find it tricky to convert what’s in their head onto paper. Teaching children how to tell a story is often the best way to start. With all our resources you can give them the skills to create a story, unlock their imaginations, and watch their writing take shape.

Bringing the experts into your classroom
We know that it is important for you to stay abreast of the latest thinking in education. It is important for us too. That’s why we are delighted to have some of the leading names in their fields working with us. Combining their knowledge and expertise with ours means that we can deliver up-to-the-minute ideas and resources straight into your classroom.

The benefits of raising boys’ achievements
YR—Y6/P1—P7 Literacy It is a well known fact that boys’ reading and writing test scores lag significantly behind girls’ from the Early Years Foundation Stage profile up to Key Stage 2 SATS. By addressing boys within your school development plan and engaging your boys at an early age, your whole school can benefit.
Gender difference in reading achievements:
England — boys are 19% l behind girls Scotland — boys are 22% l behind girls
Source: Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, OECD, 2006

3 The single most effective way to raise English
SATs scores

3 Reducing the need for costly catch-up programmes 3 Reducing the likelihood of poor behaviour
or bullying

Facts...
“A very high proportion of children with very poor literacy skills are boys.” The Long Term Cost of Literacy Difficulties, KPMG Foundation, 2006 “Boys are twice as likely to have dyslexia.” Dr Julia Carroll, University of Warwick Study, 2005

3 Increasing airtime for girls 3 Satisfying a key objective for OFSTED inspections

What about the girls?
The Project X resources and teaching techniques work wonderfully well with girls too. Schools that currently use Project X are reporting back just how much the girls love the characters and stories. The more we can get boys back on task, the more we can ensure they don’t disrupt and defocus lessons — which is great for girls.

“Boys are four times more likely to be identified as having a behavioural, emotional or social difficulty.” Gender and Education, DCSF, 2008 “There is a direct link between pupil (especially male) attainment in English at 7 and the likelihood of them bullying or being bullied by age 10.” Institute of Education Report, 2008

Gary Wilson, one of the leading authorities on raising boys’ achievement, is working together with Oxford University Press on their Getting the Best out of Boys campaign — to help raise boys’ achievement. Gary has written several books and publications on this area — including Breaking Through Barriers to Boys’ UnderAchievement.

Project X YR—Y6/P1—P7 Literacy
A boy in Year 2 was not interested in joining in any of the lessons and appeared permanently bored. When he saw the CD-Rom it instantly grabbed his attention; he became involved in what was happening on the screen and wanted to tell anyone who would listen to him about the plot and the stories. Now this boy wants to read the stories and is participating in class. His teacher is amazed at the transformation. In a nutshell, his face lit up, his attention was gained, Project X had the WOW factor for him! Mrs Hael, Literacy Coordinator, Guiseley Infants, Leeds

Character stories brought to life on screen using page-turning technology, audio, video and animations Character image bank and writing frames to support your children’s writing Years 5/P6 and 6/P7 contain interactive versions of Non-fiction texts, more advanced animations, artwork and interface, and a wealth of activities to support comprehension – plus comprehension sheets for every title

Myths and Legends
Fabulous retellings of the oldest stories from around the world
Myths and Legends are the most enduring and fascinating stories in the world, retold for TreeTops by leading contemporary children’s authors to bring out all the action, drama, humour and depth of the original stories
l

This genre is a perfect tool to develop the children’s awareness of other cultures. I think the children would really appreciate the humour used portraying the lighter, more amusing side of the myths. As I was reading them I was conjuring up activities that you could do with the children, to support writing. Literacy Coordinator, Leckhampton Primary School, Cheltenham

Case Study of Read Write Inc. Fresh Start
at Matthew Humberstone CE School Written by Julia Hepburn, Head of Learning Support
Pupils have found the programme fun, stimulating and rewarding, giving them a feeling of confidence never previously achieved. Members of staff have also enjoyed delivering and taking part in the programme. In the first 6 month period the average reading age of Year 7 pupils improved by 14 months, and the spelling by 11.5 months. One pupil improved her reading score by 26 months. We will expand the programme to benefit more pupils from September 2009. Knowing of the dramatic success of this year’s students will encourage others.
