Shorinji Kempo - 3rd Kyu Exam Translation - Version 1.00

Wouldn't it be nice to know exactly what the words used in Shorinji Kempo mean? If you think that you might be able to remember the names of techniques, stances, and so forth a bit easier by knowing the meanings behind the words; thus, having a better understanding of the martial art as a whole, then this is certainly for you.

This is a translation [Japanese/English], word for word, phrase for phrase, of the 3rd Kyu (3rd rank) curriculum. 3rd Kyu is the third degree brown belt. It is the next step after a white belt for adults (children have a few more rankings and colours).

[At the time of translation, the Manji (swastika) was the official symbol of the martial art, mainly in Asia as Western countries used a different symbol. Since then, both symbols have been replaced by an original official copyrighted logo worldwide]

From the August 1996 “Shorinji Kenpo Primary Curriculum” handbook.

Here are some basic approximate sounds. All sounds are short in Japanese unless indicated otherwise. Imagine you have been 'cut-off' from what you were going to say. Ex. car, ca-, a- . You will have to listen to different native speakers carefully to get a good feel as to how things are really pronounced. A I U E O FU (ä) car, father (e) even, meet (oo, oo)cook, book; tool, troop (e) pen, ten, let (ô) born (foo) fool; who-

おばさん おばあさん こい こうい

o-ba-sa-n o-ba-a-sa-n ko-i ko-o-i

"aunt" (short) "grandmother" (long) "love" (short) "behavior" (long)

'Double consonants' (pp, kk, ss, ssh, tt, tch) represent a small っ (tsu) that creates a slight pause or hesitation, if you will. もと もっと いた いった いち いっち moto motto ita itta ichi itchi "base" "more" (mo- to) "existed" "said" (i- ta) "one" "agreement" (i- chi)

As for the "R" (RA, RI, RU, RE, RO) sound, we don't have their sound and they don't have our "R" (are, rrr...) sound. The CDN/USA one, that is. り(RI) is somewhere between a "DI-" and "RI-" (short vowel) sound. In fact "R" & "L" sounds are the most difficult for Japanese people to say because these sounds don't exist in Japanese. In Japanese, long 'vowel' sounds are written. So don't make a long 'vowel' sound unless it is written. "And so it was written..." Romaji lettering in my notes show long sounds with a line over top ( Ō,Ū ). Here are some examples of differences between long and short 'vowel' sounds. Double 'vowels' (aa, ii, ee, oo, uu) create an elongated sound and in many instances different meanings:
あ a い I う u え e お o か ka き ki く ku け ke こ ko さ sa し shi す su せ se そ so た ta ち chi つ tsu て te と to や ya ゆ yu よ yo な na に ni ぬ nu ね ne の no は ha ひ hi ふ fu へ he ほ ho ま me み mi む mu め me も mo よ yo ゆ yu や ya ら ra り ri る ru れ re ろ ro

Accent: Japanese has a pitch system (not stress accent as in English) based upon high and low pitch. These apparently occur with respect to syllables. There are various types of pitch patterns but these are basic: あおい aoi "blue" (high in middle) kyo oto きょうと "Kyoto" (high initially) とうきょう to o kyo o "Tokyo" (low initially) Pitch pattern could vary depending on where it occurs. Ex. "university" in da i ga ku combination with another word, to o kyo o da i ga ku "Tokyo University", will change the pitch pattern.
