For the 3rd person singular, there are two different possessive pronouns, as in English as well. As you can
see the logic is the same. The possessive pronoun is determined by the owner of the object. The gender and
number of the declension is determined by the object owned. The declension is determined by the relation
between the objects or the subject and the object.

Now that we have seen that the endings are independent of the possessive pronoun and only differ with the
gender of the possessed object, we pick one of the pronouns to show all endings adjectival and substantival
in all genders.

As you can see the differences are only in Nominative for masculine and neutral nouns. The plural is for all
identical. And the feminine form is the same in adjectival and substantival form.

As we can see again, the endings of the declensions are the same independent on the possessive pronoun
(as it was already with the adjectival version). The plural of all is the same (again). The see the - very few -
differences, we will have an overview on all possessive pronouns.

16.3 Substantival possessive pronouns Abstract Noun

We had a look at the possessive pronouns that go together with a noun - just like they were adjectives
(therefore the name adjectival). Now we would like to present the possessive pronouns that do not
accompany a noun but stand instead of a noun (= substantival). Have a look at these examples.

Dieses Auto gefällt mir. = This car I like.
Dieses gefällt mir. = This (one) I like.
Mein Auto gefällt mir. = I like my car.
Meines gefällt mir. = I like mine.

You can notice already now that there are differences in the use and declension. Therefore the possessives
are presented separately. A total overview will be given in chapter 16.5.

form of a possessive that could be used (der ihrige, die ihrige, das ihrige), but it sounds really antiquated. If
you want to form a Genitive of ihre it is mostly done like in English.
