Newport commemorates Battle of Midway
Newport, R.I., June 6, 2008 – On Friday, June 6, the Naval War College commemorated the 66th anniversary of the Battle of Midway during a special ceremony in Spruance Hall. Each year the U.S. Navy commemorates one of its greatest victories by paying tribute to those brave American heroes who brought our country to victory at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. This year's theme, "The Warrior Ethos," was highlighted by a presentation titled "Torpedo Squadron 8: Leadership and Courage at Midway," delivered by guest speaker Daniel Martinez. Martinez, one of the nation’s leading experts on naval history, is Chief Historian at the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor as well as the host and historian-in-residence for the Discovery Chanel series "Unsolved History." Martinez is co-author of "Kimmel, Short and Pearl Harbor: the Final Report Revealed" and was a consultant for the University of Hawaii deep-diving submersible expedition that located the Japanese mini-submarine sunk by USS Ward on the morning of December 7, 1941. He was also instrumental in the process which led to Midway Island being designated a World War II historic site.
