The Ministry of Defence has described David Kelly as a middle-ranking official, only peripherally involved in the drawing tip of the September dossier. The BBC's source, however, knew that the intelligence on the 45-minute point derived from one, uncorroborated informant; and that the 45-minute intelligence came in late. Such facts coutd only have been known to a senior figure, ctosety involved with the dossier until a late stage. The BBC does not comment on the identity of any of its confidential sources . But Andrew Gilligan has discussed the issue of Iraq, the dossier and WMD with many of his contacts within Government, Ocluding the Ministry of Defence . Some of those conversations were attempts to corroborate ~'-- elements of the story provided by his original source, We would also point out that during the last three weeks, additional evidence has emerged to back up most of the BBC's source's charges . This is detailed below. For the vast majority of claims made in the BBC's report, this is no longer a single-source story .
