Evaluate the Role of Language in the Development of Children’s Theory of Mind

The concept of theory of mind is a hugely studied area in the development of social cognition. Theory of mind refers to the understanding that other people have of their own mental states, beliefs, desires and the knowledge that these may be different to our own. It has been suggested that the development of language may play an important role in the development of theory of mind. The exact nature of this interaction has been greatly studied and I am going to discuss first evidence that there is a link between communication within the family and theory of mind development. I shall then go on to describe the possible involvement of more precise syntactic development in the comprehending of false belief. As with almost any topic in psychology, there is evidence that argues against the role of language, such as the notion that 15 month olds can succeed at false belief tasks.
